Matt Cassel Signs Extension w/ Chiefs (1 Viewer)

I'm sorry, but giving Matt Cassel - a one year starter in the NFL - $36m guaranteed is a bit ill-advised, in my opinion. Cassel is a solid player, make no mistake, but the Chiefs must really be in love with this guy to give him all that dosh.

Pioli supposedly loved him all along with the Pats. I have to think that this negates whatever argument was being made that it will be a competition between he and Thigpen at this point. 36 Million guaranteed seems like he must be the starter now...not that there was much doubt.

Better to give that kind of money to a 34 year old vet with a noddle arm... just kidding Panther fan. :-)... kind of. :goodposting:

What are your thoughts on a player who NEVER played in the NFL getting 41.7mil guaranteed? Just curious.

This deal was a given. Like I said all along, Cassel was going to get a huge amount of guaranteed money since he was already guaranteed $15M this year. Obviously the Chiefs are high on him, but this is also the same Chiefs team that just drafted a 3-4 DE at #3 overall. I'm glad they're in the Chargers' division. :lmao:

Not sure what happened here originally, but Cassel just got a 6 year, $63M contract, with $28M guaranteed.

Just to clarify, the article says $36mm GUARANTEED.Big difference.
That was going to be my first question. How much of this is guaranteed? $36 million overall seemed low but $36 mill guaranteed seems incredibly high to me. Was there also mention of the Chiefs acquiring Randy Moss and Wes Welker prior to making this offer because then it would make sense to me...

Big risk here. Pioli's future is now tied to the success of Cassell.

Going might be a little tougher without Moss and Welker, but at the same time, Pioli is a great evaluator of talent, and he sure has seen a lot of Cassell.

I know it wasn't directed at me, but that is ridiculous. There should be a slotted rookie scale that cannot be deviated from (if it is, the draft would be like MLB which makes it completely unfair), and the money saved on those outrageous guarantees for unproven players should be given to players who have earned it.

Still too much...
It might even be worse than that.I haven't seen the details, but it is being reported as an extension. Meaning, he gets the franchise money for this year, then the extension with the 28 mill guaranteed.

Chiefs announce Cassel deal

from NBC Sports - Pro Football Talk by Mike Florio

As expected, the Kansas City Chiefs have announced that quarterback Matt Cassel has agreed to a contract extension.

No details have been provided by the club. We've heard that it's a five-year extension (making it a six-year deal), worth more than $60 million.

"We are excited to be able to reach a long-term agreement for Matt Cassel to be a Kansas City Chief for many years to come," owner Clark Hunt said. "His proven leadership on and off the field will be a tremendous asset to the organization."

"Since Matt arrived in Kansas City, he has embraced the team and the community," G.M. Scott Pioli said. "His work ethic, his athletic ability and his competitive presence is what we expect from our players."

Though the contract was executed one day before the July 15 deadline for signing franchise players to long-term deals, we've confirmed that the deadline did not apply to Cassel, for the reasons we explained last night.

As we understand, the team and the player wanted to get it done as soon as possible, and the timing in relation to the July 15 deadline was coincidental.

Still, even if there were only a five-percent chance that Article XX, Section 2(k) applies to Cassel, why take the risk of being wrong?

Sounds like he got a deal very similar to the Mark Sanchez deal, whom the Chiefs could have drafted at #3. I imagine Cassel's agent was definitely using that contract as a negotiating point. Cassel also gets $40.5M in the first 3 years, that's a nice chunk of change.

Isn't the franchise tag like $15 million? That's like $43 million guaranteed. Doesn't that make him the highest paid player in the league? Wow.... He better not answer Jessica Simpson's calls now that she is single. He could set that franchise back decades if he blows....

I read that the extension is through 2014. If it's a 6 year deal, it would be entirely new.Besides, with the rules of the salary cap, I don't think they'd be able to just extend his contract on top of the old one like that. I could very well be wrong however.

The one year franchise deal got torn up to create this one, so Cassel will get $63 million over 6 years with $28 million guaranteed. Basically, it's a 5 year extension above and beyond the original franchise deal (so another 5 years for $48 million with $13 million guaranteed).

Gotcha. I was confused on that.

I suppose if they have guaranteed him 15 mil this year, an extra 9 mil isnt too bad (unless the 36 M guaranteed does not include this years salary. if that is the case all I have to say is Ouch)

Glad this deal got done, I just hired him in my 40 (+4 taxi) IDP dynasty league a couple weeks back.

I'm counting on Cassel to be a steady Eddie contributor, especially beginning in 2010 and beyond once the Chiefs have a chance to acquire and acclimate some more receiving targets beyond Dwayne Bowe. This year, he'll be mediocre IMO, but I like his future potential.

Really not that big of a guaranteed money when you consider he was already guaranteed $14 million or so from the franchise tag. They basically doubled it and added 5 years.

Pioli drafted Seymour very high, not a Pats fan or homer...but guy can recognize talent outside of drafting WR's and RB's
