Matt Cassel (1 Viewer)

The Jacket

4 TDs today. For perhaps the first time since getting traded to KC, he looked like a legitimate $63M QB. Has 22 TD, only 4 INT on the year.

In the last few games, he's being asked to do more than just manage the game, and he's stepped up to the plate.

His connection with Bowe is the league's hottest QB-to-WR combo right now.

Playoff schedule:

@SD (14)

@STL (15)

TEN (16)

Not the easiest, but nothing to be put off by IMO.

Thoughts?

I think him and Bowe have made a real connection on the field and that has helped his numbers alot. He can trust him to come down with the ball. However, it can't be overlooked that he has faced some terrible pass D's the last couple of games. I am sure they have helped him build confidence, but I'd still be weary of starting him against a top ranked D.

Or perhaps I am completely wrong and he finally "got it" as Orton seemingly has this year as well.

I'm starting him for the rest of the year. It's not like I have many other options right now (Henne, Kolb) but even if I did I probably would roll with him anyway. After today he has become the 7th ranked QB in the Dynasty IDP league I am in that penalizes INTs (-4) as much as it rewards passing Tds (4).

Now I'm not saying I am relying on him as by QB1 for 2011 or that he is right for every situation, but you can't deny the things he has going for him (explained great by Ministry of Pain before the season even started)

In my book, he has proven enough over several weeks for me to consider him a low-end #1 qb. Off the top of my head, the only qbs that I would CLEARLY start over him are P Manning, Rodgers, Brees, Rivers, Vick, and (after the last 2 weeks) possibly Brady. After that, I currently like Cassel as well as anyone else.

Just want to highlight those amazing statistics. Now compare them to Tom Brady, a Top 3 MVP candidate at the point in the season:356 236 66.3 2703 23 4 105.8

323 195 60.4 2307 22 4 99.7

I'm not making a case for Cassel as MVP but on paper they're closer than you would expect.

From a fantasy perspective the major knock on both QBs is that they're ranked 12th and 17th in yards passing, respectively. I don't think Cassel is entering the QB1 conversation just yet, either.

His command? Not sure what it is but he still makes me think he'd be a good backup for Tom Brady to have

Here's a positively glowing report from http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/fant...16nUEE0jc"</a>"]Sports Illustrated:

• Matt Cassel, QB Chiefs -- Wow, what a season this guy is having, huh? Right now, who would you start over Cassel? I can only think of a handful of guys. Unless you have Philip Rivers, Mike Vick, Peyton Manning, Aaron Rodgers or a couple other elite passers, Cassel should be in your starting lineup. In his past four games, Cassel has thrown for 1,111 yards, 12 touchdowns and only one interception. Not many fantasy quarterbacks can say that.

Cassel is one of the top overall players in fantasy football. He joins Fred Jackson, Brandon Lloyd, Jacob Tamme and Peyton Hillis as players who will help decide fantasy titles. By the way, where did you draft those guys? Meanwhile, Ryan Mathews, Shonn Greene and Randy Moss are pretty much worthless right now. That's why I've always said the most overrated aspect of fantasy football is the draft. It may be fun but when it's all said in done, the fantasy draft matters little in my opinion.
Not sure I'd put Cassel in the same category as Lloyd and Hillis. :pirate:

he put him with those guys cause cassel went undrafted or very late. like Hillis or Lloyd

FWIW, Cassell has an unbelievably easy schedule the last few weeks. The Football Outsiders predicted this run a month ago when they pointed out that he was facing the worst 4 pass defenses in the league (using their metrics). I'd certainly say buyer beware.

I have been a pretty big detractor of Cassel this season, even with his solid fantasy numbers to start the season (spectacular of late). Part of the reason for this is because he has not until recently passed my own personal eyeball test. The two best examples of that are the game that the Chiefs played against the 49ers and the Broncos (I live in KC so I watch every KC game). In those games Cassel threw for 250/3 (49ers game) and 450/4 (Broncos) but looked terrible doing it in each of those games. Now I know from a fantasy perspective none of that matters. But I was at the 9ers game and Chiefs fans and I recall the all 3 TD's very well....the McCluster pass was poorly underthrown, which luckily made the defender (can't recall who that was) drastically overplay the ball to try to intercept. He should have but missed it, and McCluster made a nice grab and had no one between he and the goal line. The Bowe TD in that game, was off a flea flicker. A well thrown ball, but Bowe was 5 yards beyond any defender when the ball was thrown and I could have made that pass. then the Moeaki TD was one of the better plays I have seen this year, but it was a great play by Moeaki. Cassel overthrew him on that play as well, but Moeaki did make a spectacular grab. With the Broncos game, Cassel had his best statistical outing...the problem is that it happened because the Broncos came out to a 35-0 lead in the second quarter and the Chiefs had to sling it the rest of the game, and the Chiefs were never close. All of that said, these last two weeks Cassel looks like a different guy, and really actually does pass the eyeball test (mine anyway). He looks more comfortable, and seems to be making good throws as opposed to lucky ones. So maybe those early games that Chiefs fans were calling for his head when he was throwing for 3-4 TD's actually helped to build some confidence or something because right now he looks great.

That is a lot of typing to say that I thought the guy was nothing more than a good fantasy QB a few weeks ago but now think he could be a legit player.
