WAS - RB Matt Jones needs better ball security

Source: ESPN.com - John Keim

Washington Redskins RB Matt Jones needs to improve his ball security of he wants to continue to be part of the offense, according to head coach Jay Gruden. 'Definitely you're concerned,' Gruden said. 'The two biggest traits in a back are durability and ball security, and he's proved to be pretty durable so far, but the ball security thing is an issue. We've got to get it corrected.' Jones has lost two fumbles in his last two games.

Jones had fumbling issues in college at Florida, and those have followed him to the pros. We'll see if the rookie can tighten up his grip and earn a larger role on offense.

Matt Jones doesn't believe he has ball-security issues.

Advice: "I feel like it’s not an issue at all," Jones said. "They made good plays on the ball. We do ball security drills every day, and I feel comfortable carrying the ball. They just made a good play on the ball. It happens. It’s football." Jones has fumbled two times in three games to open his rookie season, losing one out of the back of the Giants' end zone for a touchback on Thursday night. Jones didn't have fumbling issues at Florida, only losing three in his entire college career.

ok, which is it? Did he or didnt he have fumbling issues in college?

He had 5 fumbles in 3 years at Florida, and lost 3 of those. This is on 166 carries. I'd call 5 fumbles on 166 carries "a problem with fumbles."

Interestingly, all this talk of his great hands and he only had 11 receptions for 65 yards in his Florida career...

gotcha...

I haven't plugged him into my line up but I was confused by the two different takes on his fumbling issues.

The reports I heard during training camp was that the Skins were surprised with how good Jones was receiving out of the backfield, since it wasn't a big part of his game at Florida.

It's no coincidence that some of the best running backs in the NFL also rank among the league's best at holding onto the football as Matt Forte, Arian Foster and Le'Veon Bell led the NFL in ball security in 2014. Among the top-10 rushers in the NFL last season, the average fumble rate was 140.3, in other words, an average of one fumble every 140.3 offensive touches.
Below is the career fumble rate (and hand size in inches) for running back prospects in the 2015 NFL Draft class:

35.4 -- Ameer Abdullah, Nebraska (8 5/8)
52.2 -- Kenny Hilliard, LSU (9 1/4)
54.4 -- Melvin Gordon, Wisconsin (9 3/4)
62.2 -- T.J. Yeldon, Alabama (9)
62.6 -- Jay Ajayi, Boise State (10)
63.2 -- Matt Jones, Florida (8 5/8)
72.3 -- Tevin Coleman, Indiana (8 5/8)
74.5 -- David Cobb, Minnesota (9 3/8)
77.5 -- David Johnson, Northern Iowa (9 5/8)
80.0 -- Javorius Allen, USC (9 3/8)
85.0 -- Duke Johnson, Miami (Fla.) (9 1/4)
87.3 -- Mike Davis, South Carolina (9 3/8)
91.5 -- Josh Robinson, Mississippi State (10 1/8)
92.7 -- Karlos Williams, Florida State (9 3/4)
123.2 -- Jeremy Langford, Michigan State (8 3/4)
125.0 -- Terrence Magee, LSU (9)
134.4 -- Zach Zenner, South Dakota State (9 5/8)
136.0 -- Cameron Artis-Payne, Auburn (8 7/8)
156.3 -- Dominique Brown, Louisville (9 1/2)
191.7 -- Todd Gurley, Georgia (10)
619.0 -- Malcolm Brown, Texas (10 1/4)

Interesting. That's less catches then Carlos Hyde had his final year in college, but he's a 2 down plodder who offers nothing in the receiving game :P

what matters is what his coach thinks/says and if he thinks he needs to get better he needs to get better. Jones's opinion of himself is irrelevant.
