Matt Jones fails to live up to hype (1 Viewer)

What was the guy expecting for a late first round QB converted to WR? I was just thinking that Matt Jones had a pretty good first playoff game and Jimmy Smith had an awful one. It looks like MJ is going to step up his role next year and JS should be phased out.If Leftwich had stayed healthy all year, MJ would have had more impressive stats. As it is, the guy still looks like the most promising WR of this class (with Braylon giving him a run for his money).

Even though he seemed to be on the highlight reel every week, he did end up with only 480 total yards for the entire year. That's 30 total yards per game. Ehhhh.

Did he fail to live up to the hype? Well, yes. The hype was very strong.Did he show signs of the potential of a 6'6" speedster with nice hands? Well, yes!

I understand your post and while the hype certainly was high, the hype wasn't that he would be an All-Pro in year 1 (at least not by most sensible people). The hype was that he could be in the Randy Moss mold by year 3.

I was tough on Matt Jones prior to the draft and tough on Jacksonville for taking him so high. While I don't think he's done anything to suggest he was worth a mid 1st rounder, I also think it's unfair to say he's been a bust either. I realize SI was speaking more toward hype. And obviously the Jones hype was EPIC, but in terms of whether he'll be a solid pro? Considering he learned an entirely new position this year and did so in a conservative offensive system, I don't see why anyone would think he doesn't have the CHANCE to be a decent NFL receiver. But let's not forget that certain talking heads were comparing him to Randy Moss prior to last year's draft. Now THAT is hype.

Bingo! Matt Jones had stats comparable or better than any WR taken in last years draft as it was, but Leftwich and Matt were just finding a nice groove been BL got hurt. SI is a rag.

Yep. I pretty much agree with the points made here so far.SI has lost it's touch, it's no longer the best sports mag in the nation, it's barely bathroom reading material now (except the Swimsuit edition).

There weren't many people who thought Jones would be a stud in year one. FWIW, he outperformed my expectations when Leftwich is in the game, and I was and am one of his stronger supporters.

The games I saw, inlcuding the playoff game, he looked pretty good. He obviously isn't heading to the pro-bowl this year, but he's given indications that he'll be there soon enough.

Nice timing as usual SI. :loco:

Refresh my memory - were they saying he'd be as good immediately, or that he has similar raw talent and potential? (the first is a dumas statement, the second IMO, true)

Not to hijack completely, but I like this piece too:The big story outside of the outcome was Sean Taylor's spitting in Pittman's face. Funny. Earlier in the game, Theismann gave us a lecture on how Gibbs only wants high-character guys on his team. Major props to ref Mike Carey for not also giving Pittman a 15-yard unsportsmanlike after he took a swing at Taylor. If someone spits in your face, you should be able to take a swing without a flag flying.Don't let that Redskins homer read this, or he'll make another thread about how Pittman should've been kicked out of the game. :ptts:

Mark Clayton: 44/471/2Matt Jones: 36/432/5Braylon Edwards: 32/512/3Troy Williamson: 24/372/2Mike Williams: 29/350/1What a stupid article.

WAY WAY WAY too early to be labelling ANY rookies as busts. You have to look back about 3 years down the road from when they were drafted.

Matt Jones has performed admirably this season. The switch to NFL wide receiver from NCAA quarterback is not an easy one.If he can stay healthy, and improve other aspects of his game, such as conditioning, route running, adjusting to the ball, etc...he will be a fine NFL receiver.

In their defense, they never said he was a bust. ;) BUT, the statement is horrible:
12. Was there a player in the NFL this season who failed to live up the hype more than Jags rookie Matt Jones? I know it was just his first year in the league and he was learning a new position, but everybody expected much more from the former college QB.
Let's see, did anyone else fail to live up to the hype more...Brett Favre

Willis McGahee

Kevin Jones

Randy Moss

Kerry Collins

Michael Clayton

Just a few that come to mind.

Or Cedric Benson, or Alex Smith, or Adam Jones, or Antrel Rolle...

Not that I necessarily disagree, but what would you say IS the best sports mag? I can only think of SI, Sporting News, and ESPN. IMO, they're pretty much obsolete since I can get most of the content for free on the internet anyway.

For my $$$, Sporting News laps the field.

 I was a ESPN subscriber for a year, just switched to Sporting News (Christmas present), and am very happy with it.

Just curious, but do you not find yourself glossing over a lot of the material because you already consumed it 3-5 day earlier from other sources?

I do at times, sure. But one could argue that guys [like us] who frequent a fantasy football message board are far from a fair indicator of whether a magazine offers valuable information to its main constituency.I like Sporting News because it covers all the teams in all the major sports each and every week. It encapsulates comments from beat writers who cover the team locally.

Mark Clayton: 44/471/2

Matt Jones: 36/432/5

Braylon Edwards: 32/512/3

Troy Williamson: 24/372/2

Mike Williams: 29/350/1

What a stupid article.
SI is a stupid magazine, but that article is more stupid than the average.First year for some WR's:

Moulds 20/279/2

C. Johnson 28/329/1

Owens 35/520/4

J. Smith 22/288/3 (actually year 3 in his career---zippo years 1 and 2)

S.Smith 10/154/0

Randy Moss was an aberration; as was Jerry Rice (although his first year was not quite as good). But virtually all other receivers take time to develop. Matt Jones has the skills; he may or not develop, but I am betting he will, even though he is learning a new position.
