Matt Ryan out for week 13

By Brian Murphy, Tuesday, December 1, 2009 3:21:11 AM EST

The Atlanta Falcons' playoff hopes hang by a thread with a 6-5 record. They hope that Chris Redman can keep that thread hanging this week with a win Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles, because he's now their starting quarterback. Regular starter Matt Ryan has been declared out for the game due to the turf toe injury he suffered on his right foot during the team's week 12 game against Tampa Bay. Ryan injured his right big toe on the first series against the Buccaneers. Head coach Mike Smith would not speculate on Ryan's status beyond this week. The start will be Redman's first since 2007.

Fantasy Analysis:

Redman put up some pretty good numbers against the Bucs -- 243 yards, two touchdowns -- but a good portion of that was due to the team's lack of faith in its running game without Michael Turner. Thus, it decided to throw the ball on their final 21 plays from scrimmage. Ryan hasn't been very good at all lately, but I still trust him more than one good game from Redman. At least he made an effort to get the ball to Roddy White and Tony Gonzalez -- each had 13 targets Sunday. We'll see what happens against the Eagles, but I'm not optimistic. Ryan may return in week 14, but the turf toe could affect him for the rest of the season, especially when he goes to push off that right foot while throwing.

That came out early yesrerday IIRC.
Ok, so nothing official? Didn't see a thread for him being listed as out, but did see another one on his injury status. Please delete if this is useless information. I don't own Ryan (just White) but thought it might be helpful, especially if true.

Matt Ryan, QB, Atlanta Falcons: Ryan is out for Week 13, and maybe longer, as a result of a turf toe injury he sustained Sunday. Ryan hyperextended his right big toe, a common mechanism for this type of injury, and was clearly in immediate pain. Ryan was examined on the sideline and had the toe taped, but after testing it with some side throwing it became apparent that he could not return to play.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Ryan traveled to Charlotte, North Carolina to be evaluated by Dr. Robert Anderson, the foot and ankle specialist who recently performed surgery on Miami Dolphins running back Ronnie Brown. The obvious good news is that Ryan did not stick around in Charlotte for surgery and is back in Atlanta where coach Mike Smith told the Journal-Constitution that "during the week [Ryan] is going to work with our medical staff diligently to get back as quick as he can." Turf toe injuries, which are essentially sprains of the ligaments that join the big toe to the ball of the foot, vary greatly in terms of severity and recovery time depending on the extent of tissue damage. The encouraging sign here is that the Falcons are talking as if they expect Ryan to return. Ryan also benefits from the fact that he is a quarterback and not a running back or wide receiver whose position demands would place greater stress on the toe. Nonetheless, he needs to be able to set his back foot and push off with the toe and he also needs to be mobile enough to move out of the pocket.

Fantasy owners should expect that this will likely sideline Ryan for a couple of weeks, but we will keep you posted on updates as they emerge.

Chris Redman and David Garrard for my playoff run. YES!!!

Keep in mind that White had some huge games with Redman the last time the two played regularly together. In the five games the two played together to end the season in 2007, White had 31 receptions, 425 yards, and 3 TDs. This includes a whitewashing the Falcons suffered at the hands of the Bucs to the tune of 37-3, in which White had one reception for four yards.

Falcons star RB Michael Turner sits out practice

By PAUL NEWBERRY (AP) – 15 hours ago

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — Atlanta Falcons running back Michael Turner sat out practice Wednesday but isn't giving up on playing in a crucial game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Turner initially suffered a high right ankle sprain in a Nov. 15 loss at Carolina. After sitting out a game, he returned to play last Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, only to go down again in the third quarter with the same problem.

The Falcons (6-5) host Philadelphia (7-4) in a matchup of teams battling for playoff spots in the NFC.

Atlanta has already ruled out starting quarterback Matt Ryan with an injured toe, and not having Turner would deprive the team of two key offensive players. In addition, right guard Harvey Dahl (ankle) skipped practice and left tackle Sam Baker (elbow) got only limited work, so the offense could be missing as many as four offensive starters against the Eagles. Receiver Michael Jenkins sat out, too, with a previously unknown ankle problem.

Turner said he'll suit up if at all possible, though ankle sprains — especially high sprains — can lead to lingering problems if not allowed to fully heal.

"I feel better than I did before," he said. "But ankle sprains are funny injuries. You've just got to take your time with it, not rush things and make sure you're back to being as close to 100 percent as possible."

Of course, he knows what's at stake Sunday.

"I don't know if I'll play," Turner said. "I'm taking it day by day. I'm not ruling myself out. I'm not saying I'm going to play."

Turner has no second thoughts about playing against the Bucs and doesn't believe that he re-injured his ankle by rushing back too soon. He said it was simply a typical football play: a defender fell on his ankle and he got pushed back under a pile of players.

"The team needs me out there. We need everybody out there," Turner said. "If I can go out there and give it some type of effort, I'll suit up and go. I have no regrets about that."

If Ryan and Turner are both out, one has to think Philly will be teeing off on Redman and double/tripling up on White all day. I'm benching White.
