SCHAUB OUT A MONTH

Posted by Mike Florio on November 3, 2008, 1:38 p.m.

Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com reports that Texans quarterback Matt Schaub suffered a torn MCL on Sunday against the Vikings, and he’ll miss at least a month.

The MCL typically heals itself with rest; surgery is required only when there’s a complete tear.

Taking Schaub’s place will be Sage Rosenfels, one of the better backup quarterbacks in the league (notwithstanding that unfortunate John Elway imitation, which cost the Texans a win over the Colts).

Over the next four weeks, the Texans host the Ravens in the Ike makeup game, travel to Indy for a rematch with the Colts, head to Cleveland for a game against the Browns, and then return to Houston for a Monday nighter against Jacksonville.

Rosenfels completed 21 of 29 passes in the second half of Sunday’s loss to the Vikings, generating a passer rating of 103.2. His 92.8 rating for the season is actually higher than Schaub’s (91.0).

Schaub has always been injury prone so I made sure to handcuff Rosenfels to him. Of course, 2 weeks ago I had to drop Sage due to bye week issues and now I gotta pray nobody grabs him. Thats doubtful so it looks like its back to Big Ben for the rest of the year.

This is word for word what I was about to post. Had Sage, and dropped him. Thank goodness we have a blind free agent bidding system. It may cost me.

Dang that hurts. I'll try to get Rosenfels off waivers, but I'm way down the priority list due to my record. Woulda rostered Rosenfels earlier but we have very limited space on our benches (6 reserves and an IR spot). I'll likely have to roll with Delhomme for a while.

From the things you don't care about file: I was able to drop Schaub and pick up Rosenfels immediately.

But seriously, thanks for posting this.

How much of a drop in production is there from one guy to another? I am curious as to the value of Daniels. It looked like Sage was locking in on OD, am I right?

I had the top ww priority last week and I used it on Ginn. F me.

Rosenfels would be a coup for me if I could get him because Eli just isn't getting the job done fantasy-wise. I need a quarterback.

I'm part of the Had Sage for a Bit But Dropped Him Club. Crossing my fingers that he'll last to me in waivers, but looks like I'll probably have to swing a trade for him.

Question: For Schaub owners, what are you willing to offer up for Sage? RB3? WR2?

Most owners should be using him in a QBBC; so would you rather just rely on your guy vs. overpay for Sage?

From a fantasy standpoint, I really don't think there's much of a difference between Schaub and Rosenfels. None of the Texans offensive weapons should take a hit or bump from the switch at quarterback. Daniels is a stud TE but his production yesterday was largely about the Vikings scheme to double and triple AJ, leaving the middle of the field wide open for OD and Kevin Walter.

This is what I'm most concerned about. Over the last two years, Daniels has not performed as well with Sage, but he kept getting fed yesterday. I still worry that Sage will continue to have tunnel vision for AJ over the next month. I think Kevin Walter gets hurt the most by this.

Slaton take a hit?
Why? I'm actually in the camp that believes Rosenfels is better than Schaub.......He certainly isn't a downgrade. If you look at the production (win-loss record, passer rating, however you want to look at it), Rosenfels has been at least just as good as Schaub over the past couple of seasons. In my wcoff online league, I drafted Schaub and cuffed him with Rosenfels after Wk 2 and have held ever since.......I'm not worried in the least about the production going down, I believe it will be (slightly) better on avg. Schaub is a lot like FWP, he feasts on the weak but doesn't step up when facing a real challenge......

Wow at least a month... So is Schaub dropable if you grabbed Sage once it is confirmed by multiple sources? That would put his return into wk 14+

phew ... glad i held onto my #1 waiver position from last week instead of using it on some useless scrub.

I don't agree with any of this. Again, the switch should not affect any of them as Rosenfels has proven himself to be a capable starter and Shanahan's offensive play-calling incorporates all four (AJ, Slaton, OD, Walter) regularly.

Last year, Schaub threw for more yards per game, but Rosenfels had a higher TD rate. In 2 games this year there has not been a significant dropoff from Schaub to Rosenfels.

Now I finally understand why the Broncos offense has been struggling. He's calling plays for both the Broncos and the Texans. We all know he's a genius, but that's a bit much for anyone. For fantasy impact... I seem to recall that it was Rosenfels appearance when Schaub was sick that jump-started AJ, but I'm not sure he can be upgraded any more over what his recent production has been, and I also see more difficult defenses for the remainder of the month. I think the defensive approach will dictate who gets more targets far more than the change in QB. The best situation is to have both AJ and Daniels or perhaps AJ and Walter. Might look into a trade before your league's deadline (and Walter may still be a free agent in some smaller/low roster size leagues).

You do realize Mike's son Kyle is Houston's offensive coordinator?

Houston's next five games (w/ FF pts allowed to QB rank)

vs Bal (23rd)

@ Ind (32nd)

@Cle (20th)

vs. Jac (5th)

@GB (22nd)

Those are some tough pass defenses. Just something to consider...

WTF did I do wrong to anger the FF gods. Geez. I know, I know, point to the shirt, but let me vent at least.

I start out after the draft with Brady and Romo and can start both because we have a flex spot. I did it last year with great success. Well now that I have now lost Brady for the year, Romo for a while and now Schaub for at least a month. I have had a ton of WR issues (Burelson, Colston, Galloway, etc.), so I don't even know if I have room for Rosenfels if I try and hold Schaub and Romo. I have Pennington as he has some sweet matchups so who knows.

I don't think I have ever had an injury year like this, especially losing so many guys who were top 15 overall in my league last year. Man it really sucks when your team looked like the best team to start and now is clawing to try and make the playoffs. :ptts:

I did not know that. Sorry about trying to have fun in this serious world of fantasy football. I'll make sure I do research for several hours before ever posting anything ever again.By the way, another important consideration is that now one more injury puts the third-stringer into the mix. I don't know his name, either, but I don't think it would be good for anyone's FF production if he plays.

Check out Daniels' splits with Schaub last year vs Sage. He was far more productive with Schaub in terms of targets, receptions and yards. Sage was the majority QB in 8 games last year (weeks 7-9, 13-17). During those 8 games, Daniels averaged 2.75 receptions, and 30 yards a game. In Schaub's 8 games, he averaged 5.1 receptions and 66 yards. Although to be fair, he did get two of his 3 TDs last year with Sage. Against Indianapolis earlier this year, Daniels went 5-47-0 (AJ had 9-131-1), so maybe Daniels has improved enough to warrant a bigger role, but 5-47 is still very meh in a non-PPR.I'm not saying Schaub > Sage, just that thus far, with the exception of yesterday, Schaub has looked Daniels' way more than Sage has.

The third-string quarterback is Owen Daniels. They don't have one right now so the team will surely elevate Alex Brink from the practice squad.

I really don't need to check out the splits because I'm a Texans fan and I watch every game. You're making a causal fallacy here--OD's production has less to do with Schaub/Rosenfels than the defensive scheme the Texans face that particular week. Shanahan will call for 81 if the middle of the field is open, regardless of who's throwing him the ball. AJ missed seven games last year, and his replacement (Andre Davis) did not represent the same threat, which meant more defensive attention was paid to Daniels.

Great observation Lobary, thanks. I love to watch the Texans, but I am tracking so many games on a Sunday for work stuff that I don't see them all that often and almost never whistle to whistle. So it's great to hear from some people who get to watch the games more closely overall than I do.So your thought is, if AJ stays healthy, Daniels will get his?

Bummer about Schaub - his exiting early didn't help my cause yesterday. Fortunately I picked up Rosenfels a few weeks ago as the rash of QB injuries hit. I'm wondering what Houston homers think about Rosenfels keeping the job for the rest of the season, even if Schaub heals as scheduled.

Yes, definitely. Daniels is an offensive threat because most linebackers are too slow to cover him one-on-one. As long as the Texans have the running game working with Slaton and they keep moving AJ all over the field, Daniels and Walter will still see opportunities because the middle will be open. Most defenses won't be able to stop all four. If they focus more attention on Daniels or Slaton, AJ's gonna burn em.

This is one the of the few QB situations where the 2nd teamer does not make a significant difference in the offense. Both operate it in an efficient manner, but make 2 oer 3 plays a game that are headscrathers. Schaub in 2008 at least has tended to do it early and Rosenfels late.

As a Houston homer I can tell you that Kubiak is all Schaub, if Sage went 4-0 I feel strongly that the job is Schaubs when he returns.

The Texans brass has consistently maintained that Schaub is the starter unless injured.Unfortunately, the Texans season is almost over at 3-5 so there could be a significant chance that Schuab is IR'ed for the rest of the year instead of bringing him back for the last 4 games.

I'm inclined to agree with you (Sage didn't get 48 mill) but I can envision a scenario where Sage becomes the starter if the team goes undefeated and he doesn't turn the ball over. If he could prove his skeptics wrong by eliminating those brain-dead plays, he *maybe* has a shot at winning the job. Still, long odds nonetheless.

 I really can't see a scenario where the Texans bring Schaub back to sit on the bench. He'll either be IR'ed or starting.

Some of these are misleading. Baltimore's pass D is all banged up right now, and Anderson and the Browns did fine yesterday (would have been a lot better if Braylon had hands). Indy, I agree with. I do expect lots of yards as they play from behind but Sage will probably get 2-3 picks. Cleveland? You saw what Flacco did to them yesterday - they can be beat. Jacksonville? I dunno, Fitz found Chad a few times yesterday. I do think that game at GB will be tough - they will get slaughtered. Still, as a spot starter - he's viable.

I'm a Schaub/Rosenfels owner (JC is my other qb) and this is somewhat concerning. I feel pretty confident that Rosenfels will put up similar #'s to Schaub. What I don't want to see is the Texans throwing Schaub back out there in week 14 @ Green Bay (barring a Rosenfels injury), as he isn't exactly know for getting off to fast starts. I'm not very excited about that week 15 matchup vs. the Titans either.

Judge Smails, shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

I'm trying to muddy Rosenfels's waters in a desperate ploy to claim him off the waiver wire.

His schedule is TOUGH! Pass it on.

The question is, how many Romo owners will grab Sage for a week only to sell high the next week to a Schaub owner.

Based on Schaub's early struggles, I already picked up Sage early in the season. Think he will be fine to rely on (Garrard is the other option)? Might grab Culpepper as crazy-stupid-insurance.

Guess it was worth carrying Sage for the past several weeks; now I can avoid the bidding war on him. Just wish Hous would make a quick decision as to whether IR Schaub as I could use that roster spot for a backup RB or something.

Sucks for Schaub and the Texans and their fans. Schaub needs the playing time to see if he can continue to improve and play better. The Texans need him out there to find out if the investment they made in him is worth it and he's the future.

If Schaub is IR'ed for the season, it could create some problems next year. Schuab's contract was a essentially a 3 year trial with a large option bonus due after the end the 2009 season. If he misses the rest of this year, there will really only be the games in 2009 to judge whether they should exercise Schaub's 3yr option or start over at the QB position.

So the question is, do you drop Schaub to pick up Rosenfels? In leagues with strict lineup policies, what is the move? I read "out at least 4 weeks" and I hear might be 6. At the very least you are at week 15 before he is starting again.
