Mauer wins AL batting title (1 Viewer)

Did Jeter need to win the batting title to get the MVP?Who is your MVP?I think mine is Justin Morneau.
Mine alsoTake Jeter out of the Yanks lineup and they still win a lot of gamesTake Morneau out of the Twins lineup and the Twins don't even come close to winning all these games

What a great player. Remember when the Twins were criticized for taking Mauer over Prior? This is why they are able to win in a small market. Good management from top to bottom.

Twins win, Royals taking the Tigers into the 12th inning tied up..

1st time in my life.. and probably last but.

GO ROYALS!!!!!

I stayed home to watch, or better yet  through the Viking game.

:kicksrock:

Should have went to the Dome.. They are having fun there right now with KC scoring a run here in the 12th.

to be fair, im pretty sure that prior's huge contract demands were the only reason he wasnt the pick. I dont believe they felt that Mauer was gonna be the better player. I mean Hell, the yankees couldnt even afford prior when they drafted him out of HS.

Jeter should win the MVP. After that (in no real order) should be Hafner, Grady Sizemore, Mauer, Manny Ramirez, and Jermaine Dye.

Pujols should win the NL MVP, although I understand if they give it to Howard.

Funny how ESPN headline says, "Jeter comes up short of Mauer in AL batting chase." The bias never ends.

I've been saying Morneau for MVP for awhile now, but it's starting to sink in that at 23 years old, winning a batting title and handling a very young pitching staff, while coming back to win the AL Central from as far back as they were, I wonder how you vote against Mauer.

The Jeter talk must end. He's had a good year, but MVP? No way.

See you at the Metrodome.

The Twins are where they are because of Santana and Lirano, and then Mauer. Morneau can rake, but is he honestly the MVP of his own team? The Yankees are where they are because of Jeter. Jeter is on the top team in the league, I'm uber biased but he's got my vote.Congrats to Mauer though for not sitting on the average and going out and playing. He's going to be a lot of fun to watch in the years to come.

Jeter's the MVP.

Without him they wouldn't have the 1 seed in the AL, but they'd still make the playoffs. So if you mean homefield advantage throughout the playoffs when you say "where they are today", then I'd agree.

I think that the way that they finished, the MVP should come from the Twins. Jeter was money this year, but the Twins battled. I know that Jeter did it all in May and June when Matsui and Sheff went down..... but in Aug and Sept, Jeter was just another cog (albeit a very good one) in the Yankee machine. The problem with the Twins is that Morneau, Santana and Mauer might split enough votes to allow Jeter to win it.

I know this is going to incite the philistines, but here goes:

Code:

I don't think these numbers say everything (Mauer handling the pitching staff, etc.) but they certainly should put to bed anyone acting as though Jeter is only considered because he's on the Yankees or plays in NY.

Hafner is incredible. I do think VORP should be adjusted slightly for defensive prowess, and so I'm sticking by Jeter as my choice.

I remember saying a few years ago how bad things were for small market teams and used Mauer as an example. Minn passed on Prior to avoid the huge signing bonus. At least in this case the small market team lucked out.

Small market teams can win. They just can't do so consistently.

That's exactly my thinking.EDIT: His VORP is more than 10% more than the next closest position player's (omitting DH's). Going down another 10% from there (Grady Sizemore) includes 6 more AL position players (the 6th being Vlad Guerrero) and a DH.

I have a friend who is a Cub fan and he still gets mad that the Twins were to cheap to pay Prior and his Cubs got stuck with him.

Impressive!

In the history of Major League Baseball, there have been only three times a catcher has won a batting title. Bubbles Hargrave was the first to accomplish the feat in 1926 with Cincinnati and Ernie Lombardi twice earned batting titles, one with Cincinnati in 1938 and another with the Boston (now Atlanta) Braves in 1942.

I find it interesting that Morneau didn't even make the Top 25.

[Hijack Alert]

And Ready Freddy Sanchez, who wasn't even a starter until Joe Randa got injured in May nails down the NL batting title!

[Hijack over--we now return you to your regulary scheduled debate]
