You have to have NFL network to have a choice.

I think we need to start a petition right now.

Allow the Commissioner to announce the draft pick FIRST please.

Those chumps love to call it right before the commissioner and they do it all day in a variety of less and less entertaining ways until the entire suspense of each pick is destroyed. Chris Berman did this last year. You want to tune into ESPN because the earpiece is making early announcements and you hate someone to get the pick before you, but then all the suspense of each pick is ruined.

Is there someone a few thousand of us can write to stop this?

Kiper BY FAR...

Not because he's more knowledgeable, but because he doesn't have an annoying lisp.
I know he has a lisp and does not sound like a new anchor, but I never found him anymore distracting than Kiper's need to talk louder and faster than everyone else.

I think his enthusiasm brings quite a bit to draft day.
I should have said it another way, but my point was I don't find that either distract from the event. In fact, I would agree that the draft needed a Mel Kiper type personality back in 1980 whatever when it was really just the commissioner reading names off a card. Without Kiper we may not have Mayock and the host of internet gurus and other draft experts.

this isn't even a contest imo
:goodposting: <<<< Hoping NFL network is SOPcasted next weekend. Time Warner.
agreed...one big difference is kiper relies on opinions of others...mayock was a former player, i think his dad was a coach/scout (?), & he can & does break down film... he also breaks down strengths & weaknesses, so you can form your own conclusions...a poll between jessica alba & bea arthur should be closer... :pickle:

My problem with the ESPN coverage the last couple of years has been the lack of Kiper, not too much Kiper. I used to love watching the second day especially. You'd get some information on pretty much every draft pick. The last few years its been a rehash of the first round ad nausem for both days. I'd much rather get Kiper talking about the picks than another video interview with the answers from the coach speak handbook.

I'll take Cory Chavois over all the ESPN crew .. so my vote has to go to NFL Networks Mayock ... besides I'm jealous of all that Kiper hair! :)

:bag:

I like Kiper better but voted for Mayock, because Kiper comes with Berman and I won't be watching ESPN for the Berman factor. Can't stand the guy.

Mayock is more knowledgable, but Kiper has a great presentation factor. I guess it depends on what mood I am in. I have NFL Network, but I don't think I can watch a draft without at least taking in some Kiper.

As someone else alluded to, I would love a show where Mayock or Kiper gave us 30 seconds of words on each pick. As the draft wears on they revisit stuff they've talked about a ton already and NOT the actual guy that just got picked.IF THEY DID THAT, I think we'd find both to be quite interesting. They don't and eventually I wonder if Kiper is gettin' old and forgets what he already said. Really a waste of some knowledgable people that are right there.IIRC NFLN had some draft coverage on the web last year, sopcast might not be needed.

Kiper did call the Colts perenial losers by passing in Dilfer. :lmao:

Then Tobin comes on and says who the hell is Mel Kiper Jr? A self appointed draft expert?

Mayock just b/c I can never trust Kiper after he rated Mike Williams as the best available prospect.
Probably one of his worst calls ever...it's going to happen to everyone in the prognostication business.
I don't have a prob with the Williams call at all. Do you two NOT think Williams is one of the more gifted NFL WRs in the NFL? Blame the player, blame the coaching staff; I can see that but blame Kiper? That guy the Steelers drafted(Gibson?) and C. Thorpe for the Chiefs, I think everyone missed the call on those two. They're :lmao: and I don't even think they bring much to the table.

Draftguys will be doing this on our draft blog this year.

I have not paid much attention to Mayock. I dont understand why anyone pays any attention to Kiper. Fact is I trust most of the post from you so called amateur FFBL dudes more than anything Mel has to say. I assume that most folks who make posts on FFBLGuys and other sites are astute talent evaluators. I think most of you watch games on Sunday rather closely to see your Studs rack up mongo points. For example, I have Gore as a Keeper this year and am a big 49er fan. I live away from California and was unable to watch most of their games. Decided to keep Gore over other options only after I was able to actually watch the Highlights on NFL.com. In Gore's case I kept thinking freight train every time the dude ran with ball. I have never seen a RB run with so much anger. The stats are great but I gotta see the Guy play before I can really get a feel for how good he projects to be.

In another league I have several picks to make in our rookie draft. I have watched every clip on every RB, WR and QB I could find. For the most part I generally agree with the rankings I see posted on most sports sites, but not always. There are several WR projected for the first day of the draft, in those consensus projections I have some serious disagreements on how effective I think a few of these guys are going to be. I am not going to say who they are for several reasons. One I am no expert, two I am no expert and third I am no expert but I'll trust you and I over Kiper every day of the week.

I have never watched NFLN's coverage of the draft, but I will this year. I find it hard to believe that it'll be worse than ESPN.

And Kiper isn't the problem. The problem is everyone else on the broadcast team. It's the same shtick, the same jokes, the same laughing-at-their-own-jokes, the same "Oh, by the way, the Colts have a pretty good QB...", "this just in, Ladanian Tomlinson is pretty good", etc. Really, I think Berman is brutal now. I don't think I've heard anything even remotely new come out of his mouth in 10 years. He's got his lines, and he uses them when appropriate.

Whatever happended to sending reporters to different NFL cities? Andrea Kremer in Cincy, Sal Pal in Philly, that dude in Dallas? They always got scoops that way, who was talking trade, etc. Now ESPN sets up a remote camera, so they can interview the coaches after the picks. Well, big deal. Those are rarely interesting interviews. "Well, we think he'll fit in here with what we do...."

I just think ESPN got lazy, because they had the franchise on this thing. The players round table? :)

With the NFLN doing it, maybe it'll force them to step it up. I always wondered why they didn't make the show more geek-oriented, because the only people tuning in after the first 2 or 3 hours, are fanatics. So why don't they skip the features on every 1st round pick, and talk more about the lesser kown players. Seriously, on Day 2, ESPN should just kick everyone else off the stage except for Mel.

:goodposting: I always hate it on Day 2 when they are still breaking down the top 5 picks - they are always the "no brainers" of the draft anyway, so why do we talk about those anyway. :wall:

Where is the BOTH option? NFL and ESPN on at the same time!
Ok- seriously- I am watching the NFL network first this year but have the remote ready to jump over to ESPN if I am not liking it more than I remember liking ESPN.
I think the hope is that they are never on a commercial break at the same time.Seriously, when watching that much of one channel, I get to know the commercials so well, it drives me nuts. If any of those "This is our country" commercials are on NFLN, there's gonna be trouble in Boston.

ESPN is abotu the shtick now -- has been for the past five years. Once upon a time, a few Sportscenter guys had little catchphrases and it was funny. The you HAD to have a catchphrase. And more than one. And if one don't work, throw 18 more at the wall to see what sticks (or shticks). And if one DOES work, please beat us to deat hwith it.If I had NFLN, I would watch it even if it was just Eisen by himself in a room. I barely watch ESPN anymore anyway for ANY sport, prefering to find my news on the web with 100% less annoying and cloying 'like us, we're hip' crap.i'm not voting cause I don't know Mayock and I don't hate Kiper all that much but the rest of that team is brutal, just like 90% of everything they do now.BOOYA! GOIN' YARD NOW! I'M OUT!

what would be sweet is a show with just Mayock and Kiper debating each pick...nothing but hard core scouting information with key GM/coach interviews.

You know.... since I have moved in to my new place and 'discovered' the cable had NFLN- I have barely watched ESPN. I try to catch the NFL Live just to have a break from the same analysis from NFLN plus I do like some of the guys from ESPN.

Seriously, the % is something like NFLN 95% ESPN 5%.

I am addicted to NFLN.

does anyone have any hard numbers on who was more accurate last year? I would be very interested in that. Who had more picks correct in the first round in their final mock draft?

Mayock was more accurate in terms of where players went...but he's more connected than Kiper given his obvious connections with the NFL. I don't put much stock in that.

No offense to Mel, but Mayock would mop up the floor with Kiper's coif.I hate to badmouth Kiper because he's the original TV draftnik and helped this area gain prominence, but very few I know put much stock in his player evaluation - and in reality, player evaluation is not the meat of what he does anymore.

how much?i mean did he have 1/2 dozen calls correct when kiper didn't, or 1 or 2?i have always watched ESPN and like kiper, but I am probably going to give NFL a try this year. ALTHOUGH, I did that with the NFL Hall of Fame ceremony and was VERY disapointed. That, however, was because the NFL network either could not or would not show any Berman. Since he was the MC of the event, that caused issues.Anyway, it seems like their should be a site that tracks 4-5 popular mocks from year to year and reports on accuracy. If no one is doing it why don't we do it here? We could track Mayock, Kiper, Scouts Inc, CBS Sportsline, the sporting news, and whoever else. People who have access just log in monday and count how many first round picks were right and we post it in a thread

Mayock is obviously more of a football guy and the more respected evaluator of the two, but I think Kiper is more than knowledgable enough to debate players with him. It's not like Kiper is just a pretty face.

The Huddle Report already does that.

I agree. Mayock can read game tape, while reaching his own technical conclusion. Kiper has league contacts/sources and regurgitates opinions. BIG difference.
