PITTSBURGH -- Ravens linebacker Jameel McClain and defensive lineman Haloti Ngata have both drawn the NFL's wrath for hits to the head in Sunday night's 13-10 loss to the Steelers.

McClain was fined $40,000 for his helmet hit that left Steelers tight end Heath Miller with a concussion, while Ngata drew a $15,000 fine for a hit to the face of quarterback Ben Roethlisberger during Pittsburgh's first series. Ngata's left hand raked across the quarterback's face during Pittsburgh's first offensive series, but was not penalized.

/sigh

First off I don't think McClain should have been fined at all. He was tackling low and Miller was basically falling down. Not a helmet to helmet but a body to helmet hit?

I don't know but I thouht Ngata would have gotten more. Looked like he was trying to do it.

See Massaquoi. Mohamed.Except 75k vs 40k.***but I agree, defenders have to be able to deliver a blow in the chest/waist area in a bang-bang play.

It's getting stupid. Basically, if a guy gets a concussion or gets hit in the head he's getting fined. 75% or more of these plays are not malicious at all. The most athletic person in the world cannot change a hit while he is in the middle of delivering it and neither can these DBs and LBs. Any ball carrier can change the position of his head to attempt to truck someone or to just try and get by the tackler. Can't expect big hits to no longer occur, and some of those are going to be like the one on Miller last night.

You can actually hit a ball carrier in the head. The QB in the act of passing and the receiver in the act of catching are different. (right or wrong)

I agree with the fine on McClain. Miller was already low and the hit was pretty late I thought. And no they don't fine them all. Coleman did not get fined for the Collie concussion.

Blatant enough to draw fines, but not so much that the ref’s can see them happening on the field? Nothing new here of course, but still crazy.

I’m not sure the shot to Ben’s face deserves a fine. It looked like an unfortunate accident to me as a defender just grasping for what he could get his hand on to sack the QB ended up smacking him in the nose.

Easy for me to say since it wasn’t my nose, but it didn’t look intentional to me.

See i disagree. McClain was already going low to hit him in the waist before Miller started to fall. It was in 2 seconds it happened. Had Miller caught that it and didn't start falling it would have been in his waist/stomach area. There was nothing dirty, nothing illegal about it. It was just a, and i hate using this term, bang bang play. This stuff happens, you can't fix it unless you take tackling out the game completely and then you have two hand touch/flag football.

Exactly I am wondering if any of these people have ever played a sport, even with two hand touch football, you sometimes collide because the defender does not know what the player with the ball is going to do, and when you are running at full speed you cannot stop and change direction immediately, if you agree with the fine, try running at a tree full speed and one foot before it see if you can miss it, now what if that tree is a person whose next move you cannot predict. Even the replays in slow motion you can see miller falling down after barley being touched by Carr, how the **** is McClain supposed to know that, now watch it in real time.

There is precedent for exactly this type of hit. James Harrison's on Mohammed Massaquoi. It was a bang-bang hit with the pass catcher in the process of falling toward the ground. I think the point most Steelers fans are making is that if the Massaquoi hit is fined (75K), then the Miller hit has to be too.I think if you asked those same fans whether neither or both should have been fined, then most would say neither.

I think McLain had plenty of time to let up, but instead accelerated. No problem with either fine.

You gather that from what evidence, your opinion... depending on the replay, from the time miller starts going down to when he is hit takes 1.5 to 3 seconds, AND THATS SLOW MOTION.... neither should have been fined, please stop watching the NFL and pick another sport, you and other "fans" like you are helping to water down the game.

Ah, one of those agree with me or you're a d*** posters. Go tell someone else what to do in their spare time. As far as the Ngata hit, it's right there in the rule book... hands to the face, penalty and fine. If you have a gripe, please sir, oh please, don't blame it all on me. Like my opinion or yours means something. Write a letter to the NFL offices. Where it will go in the trash can, where it belongs.

According to the rules and the new enforcement of the rules both plays should have been flagged and the fines were warranted also. Anytime there is any kind of hit to the quarterbacks head that is roughing the passer. A head to head to a defenseless player is also illegal and now gets a fine.

I understand what you are all saying. When Harrison got summoned to New York and talked to the commisioner. He tried to explain about how certain situations such as a player going for the ball and you are already commited to the tackle in the so called strike zone and his head goes down, much like Miller's did, it happens so fast that you can't avoid hitting him. Harrison was told that it is always the defenders responsibility to avoid the head to head hit no matter what the circumstances. As far as a blatant or not blatant hit it does not matter you still get fined.

So if that is the case and it is called consistantly I have no problem with it. The commisioner jumped on this whole thing so fast that there is no real rhyme or reason to what, when and if these calls get made and the amounts of the fines. I imagine if an agreement is reached this will be looked at in the offseason.

Ah one of those I create an opinion about everything without looking at any facts/evidence, when evidence is presented that counters my hastily created opinion I ignore it.

I think the decision to fine Ngata was the correct one, as well as most fines against Harrison, when hitting the quarterback. The quarterback is usually standing up straight trying to delivery a pass when he is hit, not running a full speed, there is less chance of him moving in a way that a correct hit turns into dangerous/fined hit.

Good post fdsannie, I also hope they look into adding more roster spots, because with the speed that the game is played today, the amount of concussions(with the growing ability to diagnose them) are only going to increase.
