He's played hurt many times before...sure he wants to play against Brees, but...

looks like GT decision...all on A. Reid

Eagles | McNabb doubtful for Week 2

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid said during his press conference Friday, Sept. 18, that QB Donovan McNabb (rib) is listed as doubtful for Week 2. Reid said McNabb has been improving each day but it's hard to know where he'll be by game time.

Eagles | McNabb misses practice Friday

CBSSports.com reports Philadelphia Eagles QB Donovan McNabb (rib) is not practicing Friday, Sept. 18.

Based on the above I would say McNabb will not be playing this weekend. Always bad news when a player cannot practice on Friday.

I think this quote from Reid is a very good sign...

Reid said McNabb's rib has become "sticky" -- or, more stable -- which was encouraging."When they start feeling better, that's normally a sign that's happened," he said.McNabb laughed at his locker when asked about his sticky ribs."I don't know what that means," he said. "I never heard that in all my life."

I'm as hopeful a McNabb owner as anyone, but I think there's less than a 20% chance of him playing this weekend. Looks like I'm stuck with Garrard.

Why? They can use a flak jacket. And Reid knows that to win he has to play McNabb.I think that if McNabb can go Reid will let him. I say its 50/50.And not knowing makes it really tough on the opponent's planning. If he's out they run heavy which requires a totally different plan and preparation than your normal potent Eagles offense with McNabb in it

I'm no doctor, but I'm guessing that the bone has started to mend but isn't yet as strong as it will be, meaning the "sticky" rib can become unstuck with a good hit.As a McNabb owner, I'm hopeful that they'll sit him for at least a week and let it get a bit stickier before they throw him back out there and potentially make a relatively minor injury a lingering one.

I wouldn't start him even if he plays. With that o-line, one hit to the ribs and he's out for the rest of the game (at least).

I think the injury is a little more than slapping a jacket on him. Broken ribs are painful. One good hit and McNabb could go from being out a week or two to a month or two. Like I said, I don't want to be stuck with Garrard for the next 3 fantasy games, but if I can somehow win two of those games with a healthy McNabb back and his bye week gone, I'll take my chances for the rest of the season.

That's why God invented the ability to give local nerve blocking agents. But yeah I think not hearing any news about practice today is a bad sign.

Vegas believes otherwise.

Exactly. Even if he starts, it's not worth the risk. Definitely going with my BU (Edwards) I do like the TB match up, though.

I'm a McNabb owner that hopes he sits. Worst case scenario I'll take an L this week but I rather have him for my playoff push then him play tomorrow and get seriously injured. I'm going with Orton with hopes that Reid goes with Kolb.

Sitting McNabb.

Hope he rests and comes back after the week 4 bye. I'll manage til then. Don't want to lose him for the season.

This particular broken rib presents an entirely different set of circumstances than most in that it is on his backside. It would be completely exposed in that he can't use his arms to cover up and help protect it. A flak jacket is not a fix-all by any stretch for a broken rib. Much like a car bumper, a hard enough hit and the car still receives damage. McNabb would be too easy a target if the Eagles were to put him on the field. I don't see where there is any way he plays this week, sticky or not.

Kinda like the OT rules?

Can anyone comment on the impact of the broken rib being in back vs front on his ability to move/throw?

Hoping he heals quickly but, fantasy-wise, I agree it is a huge risk to play him Sunday. Even if he starts, he could get pulled if he's having trouble with it.

ETA- I see Andy did comment on the rib position. Thx.

I wanted to expound on that this morning but was pressed for time. Had to be somewhere. Only reason I was up that early.Anyhow, although I'm sure he could move gingerly at best, his (any) throwing motion would present a whole nother challenge. IIRC, the rib in question is on his right side, thus restricting him to throw with much of any velocity. Deep crossing routes, sideline throws, etc. It would also put alot of stress and strain on it which could also hinder the healing process. I'm no doctor, but I've had a laundry list of injuries myself and have a pretty good understanding of how the body reacts to them. Broken bones, surgeries, torn ligaments, tendons and muscles. You name it.

Let's just say the average everyday Joe (no, not our Joe) breaks a rib and goes to see his doctor.

I would imagine his orders would go something like this:

1. Rest and take it easy.

2. Avoid any strenuous activity.

3. Take your medication as prescribed.

No. He's not playing tomorrow. The signing of Jeff Garcia this week should have clued everybody in on that.

One question. If this is so cut and dry why hasn't McNabb been officially ruled out already?
They just want to keep everybody guessing, like 80% of this board.Tell me this, have there been any reports of McNabb even "throwing" this week?
Maybe he has been throwing but maybe they want to keep it secret so as to keep everybody guessing. Not likely.
No. Not likely at all. Like I said, they went out and signed Jeff Garcia for a reason.ETA: Actions always speak louder than words. That will never change.

He will be inactive for this game. However, he will still be eligible as the 3rd string QB if necessary by NFL rule. If they were to rule him or list him as "out," they would not have that luxury. He would thus be ruled as entirely ineligible.

my league gives 1 point per completion, so QB scoring is huge. If he goes out early, i risk falling behind 30 or so points at the QB position. (opponent starting manning). I'm gonna play it safe and roll with Flacco this week. Cant risk it.

Now that makes sense. Thanks.
