First of all, it's quite clear from the video that Kelly is trying not to be a Santa Claus spoiler to kids that might be listening in while their parents are watching. That's reasonable. And, of course, the Santa myth came from St. Nicholas who was Greek and, thus, white. Regarding the Jesus part, people from the Middle East are considered white in many classification systems including U.S. Census data. Of course the common depiction of him that we see looks much more like a Northern European. Is that what the issue is?

I'm inferring that I highly doubt she was thinking of the classification of Arab people according to the US Census Bureau when she said that Jesus was white.

Third Century Greece was much different than today. Saint Nicholas was born in the Roman Province of Lycia et Pamphylia. He was raised by his uncle, the Bishop of Patara, and raised in the city of Myra.

At the time, this area of "Greece" was part of the Diocese of Asia.

The "she was trying to protect the kids" thing is pretty silly.

First of all, bringing up this topic at all is going to jeopardize as much as casting any doubt to his race. The 2 lines she spit out before reassuring the children: "Slate doesn't think we should have a white Santa anymore" and "Yet another person claiming it's racist to have a white Santa". And then they talk about Slate wanting Santa to be a penguin.

Doesn't really matter because kids that can't see through the Santa lie yet aren't putting the pieces together. If this was a noble concern, then she wouldn't have brought it up in the first place.

What's clear from bringing this up and her reaction is that what's really going on is that the idea of a non-white Santa freaks her the hell out. That's what's interesting about it (not which box Santa would've checked in the census).

Then the part about changing things and revising historical facts that make you feel uncomfortable really sort of set it off.

No, if you read the Slate article the author make it's quite clear that the reason Santa should be changed is because his whiteness confuses some non-white children, not because Santa's humanness confuses non-white children.

I think Stewart summed up the problem with what she said by asking what sort of kid is sophisticated enough to be up watching and understanding FOX News, yet is also naive enough to still believe in Santa, and also racist enough to demand that he be white.

Putting aside that that might describe some of the adult FOX viewers, it doesn't make a ton of sense for her to be so determined to reassure the children that Santa is white.

Then the line that you shouldn't change something because it makes you feel uncomfortable while discussing a fictional character that's obviously had his story dramatically changed from the real guy he was based on to make folks feel more comfortable just made her sound dumb.
