Megyn Kelly (1 Viewer)

Well the big problem is there is no way Jesus was white and anyone with two working brain cells should be able to figure that out. Oh and Santa isn't a historical figure. He is a creation of Coca Cola at least the version we are most familiar with.
First of all, it's quite clear from the video that Kelly is trying not to be a Santa Claus spoiler to kids that might be listening in while their parents are watching. That's reasonable. And, of course, the Santa myth came from St. Nicholas who was Greek and, thus, white. Regarding the Jesus part, people from the Middle East are considered white in many classification systems including U.S. Census data. Of course the common depiction of him that we see looks much more like a Northern European. Is that what the issue is?
Man, the census has been around FOREVER.
Are you inferring that we should have to use racial classifications that existed 2,000 year ago?
I'm inferring that I highly doubt she was thinking of the classification of Arab people according to the US Census Bureau when she said that Jesus was white.
I see. I'm just making the point that are definitions that allow for that classification including the one that our own government currently uses. Besides, I'm quite certain Megyn Kelly knows what part of the world the historical Jesus alledgedly came from.

Jesus, get back on point guys. Kelly's response is primarily about the central Christmas figure, Santa not Jesus.

And yet she acts like she doesn't. Oh and St Nick was Turkish not Greek.

Third Century Greece was much different than today. Saint Nicholas was born in the Roman Province of Lycia et Pamphylia. He was raised by his uncle, the Bishop of Patara, and raised in the city of Myra.

At the time, this area of "Greece" was part of the Diocese of Asia.

A white First Century Jew? Um, no.

Nicholas was born a Greek[12][13][14] in Asia Minor during the third century in the city of Patara (Lycia et Pamphylia),[15][16] which was a port on the Mediterranean Sea,[16] and lived in Myra, Lycia[17] (part of modern-day Demre, Turkey), at a time when the region was Greek in its heritage,[16] culture, and outlook and politically part of the Roman diocese of Asia.[16] He was the only son of wealthy Christian parents named Epiphanius (Ἐπιφάνιος) and Johanna (Ἰωάννα) according to some accounts[18] and Theophanes (Θεοφάνης) and Nonna (Νόννα) according to others.[16] He was very religious from an early age[14] and according to legend, Nicholas was said to have rigorously observed the canonical fasts of Wednesdays and Fridays. His wealthy parents died in an epidemic while Nicholas was still young and he was raised by his uncle—also named Nicholas—who was the bishop of Patara. He tonsured the young Nicholas as a reader and later ordained him apresbyter (priest).
I can see the case being made either way. Anyway, it doesn't matter. Turks are considered white too.

So basically she says something kind of stupid and historically inaccurate but because she is a bottle blond on Fox it's cool. Got it.

What did she say that's historically inaccurate? That Santa is a historical figure? That was with a wink and a nod. That Jesus was white? If he wasn't Black or Hispanic* or Asian or Native American or Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, then he was White by many standard classifications.

I don't see anything to justifiably nitpick in her statement.

_____

*Or is your position that Jesus, based on his name, was probably Hispanic, like Jesus Castillo, or Jesus Alou, or Jesus Montero?

Yes, because in Jesus' time, U.S. census forms did not include a box for "Other". That wasn't added until 160 AD.

It actually has been: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_censor (Granted, the Romans probably did not ask for racial classification.)

The "she was trying to protect the kids" thing is pretty silly.

First of all, bringing up this topic at all is going to jeopardize as much as casting any doubt to his race. The 2 lines she spit out before reassuring the children: "Slate doesn't think we should have a white Santa anymore" and "Yet another person claiming it's racist to have a white Santa". And then they talk about Slate wanting Santa to be a penguin.

Doesn't really matter because kids that can't see through the Santa lie yet aren't putting the pieces together. If this was a noble concern, then she wouldn't have brought it up in the first place.

What's clear from bringing this up and her reaction is that what's really going on is that the idea of a non-white Santa freaks her the hell out. That's what's interesting about it (not which box Santa would've checked in the census).

Then the part about changing things and revising historical facts that make you feel uncomfortable really sort of set it off.

Or you could say that Kelly discusses the historical origins of the Santa Claus figure in response to a woman who is freaked the hell out by a white Santa.

They also suggested a Penguin Santa, so maybe they were freaked out by a human Santa.

Why didn't Kelly reassure the children that Santa is, indeed, human?

No, if you read the Slate article the author make it's quite clear that the reason Santa should be changed is because his whiteness confuses some non-white children, not because Santa's humanness confuses non-white children.

"America is less and less white, but a melanin-deficient Santa remains the default in commercials, mall casting calls, and movies. Isn’t it time that our image of Santa better serve all the children he delights each Christmas."

The author proposes a penguin as the new Santa not because she or anyone else feels alienated by a human Santa, but rather as a middle ground because, presumably, children not of the race of the new different colored human Santa would also feel alienated.

Since Santa's human form is not really the author's point, there's no need for Kelly to address it.

Just before the beginning of the Jesus/Santa were white bit, Ms. Kelly says, "...so i've given her, her <you know> her due..on where she was going with it...BUT...Just because...it makes you feel uncomfortable, doesn't mean it has to change..."

Perhaps it's just my perception, but that seems like a giant :whoosh: to me. This does not seem to be the point Ms. Harris is trying to make in her article

"My point is, how do you just revise it in the middle of the legacy of the story and change Santa from white to black?"

WE MUST PROTECT THE WHITE LEGACY of SANTA & JEEBUS

I can't believe all the over analysis and criticism over the discussion of Santa Claus.
Yes...it was a great idea for them to cover the subject in the first place with a four person panel. What a great show.

Does anybody here actually watch Fox News for anything other than a good chuckle?
The problem is a lot of people especially in their mid to late 40s and over watch Fox News like a religion. That's a lot of people.

to be fair about it, it sounds like a lot of people are reading what they want to hear into what she said about santa.
What she said was mind-numbingly stupid
like I said, that's what you're looking for, so that's what you hear.

I don't watch fox news, have never heard of her in my life, and have no axe to grind.

of course it's always fun to wait for some celeb or public figure to slip up so we can ridicule them and bring them down to our level --- I'm not above that.

I think Stewart summed up the problem with what she said by asking what sort of kid is sophisticated enough to be up watching and understanding FOX News, yet is also naive enough to still believe in Santa, and also racist enough to demand that he be white.

Putting aside that that might describe some of the adult FOX viewers, it doesn't make a ton of sense for her to be so determined to reassure the children that Santa is white.

Then the line that you shouldn't change something because it makes you feel uncomfortable while discussing a fictional character that's obviously had his story dramatically changed from the real guy he was based on to make folks feel more comfortable just made her sound dumb.
