Memorial Day Weekend Plans - What Are You Doing? (1 Viewer)

Me and the wife work together, from home, with out first child, and we are the primary child caretakers. Usually Grandmom helps out during the week, but she is in Texas for a month so its been just us all week. The work week has been "hectic" - always is before the holiday as we work in freight/logistics. Safe to say we need to get away, so we are packing up the jeep and baby and heading out to Palm Springs this weekend and all I can say is I plan to do NOTHING. George Costanza style, just kick back and really relax and do absolutely nothing.

What are your plans this weekend?

Usually spend the weekend at the in-laws as they live on a lake. They are out of town this weekend visiting friends so I think it will just be some more yard work work projects and a lot of relaxing.
Seems like a golden opportunity to have a Lake House to yourself!
Well the reason the in-laws are leaving is that they have a construction project going on at their home that’s not quite done yet. So while they aren’t likely working over the weekend, the house is a little cluttered and out of order. We are still thinking about doing a day there and just spend all the time outside.

Work Friday and half day Saturday. Yardwork Saturday and Sunday. Monday hosting about 20 for grilled pork chops, hamburgers, hotdogs and corn. Also having watermelon and potato salad.

Heading to the beach in 30 minutes. We have nice weather but the beach will be ruined this weekend with tourists. Hopefully we can get in a second trip to the beach on Monday afternoon after all the tourists are gone.

Do you have a smoker by chance? One of my favorite things when I host a big party is smoking a big hunk of meat or a variety of meats!

Work has been very stressful over the past 3 weeks. going to chill tonight. my wife, daughter, and mother have plans tomorrow. not sure what I will do.

Haha the Summer of Steve will never happen, but I'm trying!

3 day golf tournament. Should be all morning tee times, at least for first two days, so then probably hanging out and grilling with the family Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

this has always been THE weekend member/guest at our club - 4 days (3 days 27 holes a day min) lots of gambling, parimutuel betting each day and full tourney by flight, etc.

2 dinner parties - and full open bar all 4 day weekend

total drunkfest

I haven't played in a long time - but certainly the highlight of the year.

My wife is taking our kids camping starting tomorrow morning, though Monday. So I will be flying solo for a couple-few days!

Plan is to walk to the beach tomorrow late morning/early afternoon (2ish miles) to have a couple of beers and a slice of pizza at this beachside spot, and walking home. A solid 4-5 miles will be good for my ongoing steps challenge. May meet a fraternity buddy there.

Will probably hit up my local dive bar for a few cocktails later in the day.

Sunday's open; will hopefully be able to wake up in time for church and plan on just relaxing most of the day. May grill up a burger or two for myself. Will probably also walk to the gym (1 mile each way) to get a workout in, too.

I work retail so whenever others get holiday I have no clue how that is or feels. Godforbid you take a holiday off and they act like you committed a crime too. I'm working all weekend at night. I'm a bit jealous others are off while I slave my way through dealing with entitled and ignorant customers who have no idea what personal space is.

My old smoker rusted out. I moved recently an electric smoker and a barrel smoker without a wood box were left behind by the previous owner. I plan on trying both out this summer, however I will will be looking to upgrade the barrel smoker.

Hosting the extended family at the lake. Agenda is boating, tubing, wakeboarding, floating, pickleball, basketball, cornhole, beer pong, beer die, campfire (+s’mores and guitar/singing), poker, eating, drinking and laughing. I’m old enough to have adult nephews, niece and son, but not so old that there are any grandkids, so it will be a 100% adult family weekend.

Enjoy it GB!

I do like camping but I snore like a mofo and it's kind my wife's "thing" with our kids. Plus she's going with her "book club" friends and their kids and I don't think any of the husbands are going anyways. Allows me a couple days to walk around the house in my underwear and not have to answer to anyone :D

Living the dream for all of us!

My mom took a nasty fall a few weeks ago—so I’ll be running her around to doctors appointments and physical therapy. Tonight I’ll be attending my nephews graduation ceremony. Tomorrow I’ll be running around seeing a couple of clients, and grabbing supplies and groceries for a Sunday bbq/party that I will be hosting for memorial day and for various graduations/birthdays of several family members. It will be fun, but it will also be a lot of work as I’m coordinating and setting up/cleaning up everything single handedly. Monday will hopefully be my first day in a really long while to where I can attempt to relax a bit. The past few weeks, and the next few weeks can and will be insane for me in regards to my schedule.

Stealing a joke from an old FBG FFA post - you'll be watching your porn with the volume up this weekend!

I'm officially old. This sounds fun but exhausting.

Splitting and stacking wood...just took down a couple trees.
Impressive! Are you in a very remote area/living almost off grid? Or just that's the life?
Not remote, but had a big oak that was damaged in a storm a few years back and it needed to come down...it already did damage to our home in that storm and we don't need for that to happen again. Also had 3 beech trees that had dead tops and were in the way of some backyard plans. For the record, I am splitting and stacking, but I did not take down the trees myself. I could have handled the beech trees, but the wife didn't trust me after a neighbor took out his AC a few years ago trying to bring down a similar tree. So a company came in and dropped the trees and cut up pieces into 2 ft lengths. I split some some of it a week ago, and need to do some more. It is actually fun to swing the axe. There is something satisfying when you put that axe through the log with a single swing, hear the crack and watch the pieces fly apart. Getting the logs onto the chopping block and stacking are the tough parts. Oak is freakin' heavy.

Hell yeah man. Good work and smart to listen to the wife, even if its so you don't have to keep defending your stance. Nothing like breaking stuff apart with a tool!

Not doing anything differently Saturday. Going to Memorial day ceremonies put on by the VFW Sunday and Monday.

Sunday bbq with several friends. work monday

@ChiefD

friends are hosting...they asked for a starch. i am making a bacon/gruyere gratin with caramelized onions and a potato anna

Gratin:
1-2 yellow onions (finely sliced)

7-10 slices of bacon (diced)

3 lbs of potatoes (russet)

2 cloves of garlic

3/4 qt of cream

1/2 pt of milk

8 oz to 1 lb of shreaded gruyere

salt and white pepper to taste

crisp diced bacon. set aside with slotted spoon. use bacon fat to caramelize onions (use some veg oil or butter if it seems like there's not enough fat). this is a slow process (even at home i'd go 1-2 hours). you cook a little. you add a little water. you let it almost evaporate. then add more water. once done you can set them aside (you can do this a day or so in advance).

preheat oven at 400. milk, cream, and garlic in a pot. bring to a boil (watch out! it will very quickly overflow and run over the sides of your pot!). take garlic out and set aside. while you are waiting for the milk/cream to boil.. peel potatoes and hold in cold water. thinly slice the potatoes (size of potato chips or thinner) and arrange in a greases baking dish. a layer or two of potato, onion, bacon and a little of the mlik/cream... keep doing that until you are out..... top it with the gruyere.. in oven cook about 40 min... you want the potatoes to absorb the milk and the top to brown.

Not a whole lot. I got home from my Taos trip late Friday night. Yesterday my wife and I continued our Europe trip planning that we are leaving for next week. My just-graduated 18-year-old son is in Bimini with a bunch of other graduated seniors from Miami. Apparently, it's a yearly event that I know he was really looking forward to. What can go wrong with a bunch of 18-year-olds on a Bahamian island 30 minutes away from Miami where drinking and gambling are legal at that age?

While his mother is a bit concerned, I can't be happier for the kid. I'm sure he's having a blast with his buddies and whoever else they end up meeting up with. He already reported to me that "it's BS that they raise the limits to $25 at the Blackjack tables and Pina Coladas are $20!".

Glad to see he has his priorities in order. LOL

My wife is leaving early tomorrow morning to drive up to her Mom's house with our cat. Thankfully she agreed to take care of it while we are in Europe for a few weeks.

So overall, pretty uneventful. For me at least.
