Chargers LB tested clean 19 of 20 times

By Chris Mortensen

Special to ESPN.com

If an effort to distance Shawne Merriman's name from being attached to a new policy, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has revealed to ESPN's Chris Mortensen that the Chargers star linebacker has tested clean on 19 of 20 random tests for performance enhancing drug since he entered the league two years ago.

Merriman was suspended for 4 games in 2006 for testing positive for steroids, which he has steadfastly claimed came from a tainted supplement. As a consequence, the NFL and the NFLPA have agreed that players who are suspeneded under the policy will not be eligible for the Pro Bowl, starting with the upcoming season. A formal announcement is expected prior to the season.

Leery that the new policy will be know as the "Merriman rule," Goodell has asked the union to include all players suspended under any existing policy, such as player conduct, to be omitted from the Pro Bowl. NFL Players Association Executive Director Gene Upshaw refused the proposal.

However, at the behest of Merriman, the union gave the league permission to disclose Merriman's testing results, overiding the confidentiality rules in place.

"This is something Shawne wanted to get out," Goodell said.

The good news is, it sounds like for the most part, he is good about covering up his steroid use. I doubt he'll get caught again.

Good news for SD.

any honest player would have been 20-20 without some kind of masking agent

How many of those tests have been AFTER he got caught?

Lets say he went for 2 for 3 before getting caught and now has been clean afterwards when he knows he is getting tested all the time....who fricken cares?

Merriman tested clean 19 of 20 times, ***OFFICIAL HATER APOLOGY THREAD***
:lmao: You had to know how this thread was going to go, right?
Of course! I think the hate grows exponentially after every time he sacks their favorite quarterback.
I neither hate Merriman, nor has he sacked my favorite quarterback
See!He hasn't sacked your favorite QB yet and because of that you don't hate him. Wait until he sacks him three times and does that stupid little LOOK AT ME! dance of his.

I'm a little confused. I thought the 4 game suspension was for your SECOND offense.

1st offense puts you in the program

2nd offense 4 games

3rd offense out for Year

Is this not the case? Or do steroids not have the 1st offense freebie?

On the first positive, a player is suspended for four games. He is suspended for eight games following a second positive, and a third positive will result in at least a one-year suspension.

Is this just Steroids? Because Ricky and Onterrio went from 4 to year.

I really could care less. Just play football. I'll just let those talking heads on PTI, Around the Horn, etc. have fun with it.

im a charger fan...what is there to apologize for? nothing.

btw, how many of those tests were taken after he was caught? 19 out of 20 doesn't mean much. It only takes one bad test and you are done again.

Merrimen, already had a high motor and wanted to supercharge his body. Now he is back to normal.

Really? Does this look familiar?

"Raiders are most certainly making quality moves, starting with the coaching staff. Lane Kiffins choice in assistants is encouraging to any fan, bringing in quality coaches to help erase/scrub off the crap they have been learning recently. Its about time all these Raiders get their heads into the game and earn/learn some professional self-respect.

Reworking the offensive scheme with more than an ample amount of tutors/coaches to go around. Each player is going to have chance to be handled personally and effectively.

Kiffin, so far, is off to a better start than Art Shell. Shell immediately alienated the team when he clashed with Jerry Porter. Things started off poorly and resonated like a tuning fork.

Any improvement in time of possesion, oline play, better qb guidance, wr focus and the defense can continue its good play, it is good time to be a raiderfan. The 1st 4 resquests might be asking alot biggrin.gif. At the NFL level there is no way MEN can continue to suck. The Raiders will respond positively. It can't get any worse.

Take Calvin Johnson(too talented)...trade Randy Moss(too lazy )...develop your former offensive draft picks(too underdeveloped from poor tutoring)...Raise the Organization Spirits(too depressing)

Go Raiders!"

I don't think he deserves 19 gold stars for not cheating 19 times.

He cheated. He got caught. He payed the price. His image will always be tarnished as it should be. Just move on 'gunz.

I think you misunderstood, he's a chargers fan but he also a fan of the entire AFC West. The way PAC10 fans support one another transcends into the NFL and other sports...

whats your point? :tinfoilhat: that i am only allowed to cheer for 1 single team.Im a Raider Fan from Los Angeles, went to High School in San Diego became a Charger fan too. Raider #1 Chargers #2. I have a ton of friends and family in San Diego. I participate in a Homie Keeper League based out of SD(drive down specifally for the draft). The only time i dont cheer for the chargers is when they play the Raiders.

BTW, what is everyone supposed to apologize for?

Merriman FAILED a drug test. One is more than enough.

Do you really root for rival teams? It's one thing to have a "second", out of conference team and may face each other one every few years...... the Chargers and Raiders play twice yearly. Their fans hate each other.

You should apologize for lying about being a Charger fan.

The drug he tested positive for stays in the system 18 months. 19 out of 20 clean tells you that there are flaws in the tests, unless he tested clean 19 times before he took the drug, then he tested positive.

How many of those tests have been AFTER he got caught?Lets say he went for 2 for 3 before getting caught and now has been clean afterwards when he knows he is getting tested all the time....who fricken cares?
That is spot on. He passed what? One test before he tested positive?

No, he passed all of them before he tested positive. All players are tested once in the preseason. Beyond that, there are weekly random tests. Once a player tests positive he is regularly (non-randomly) tested for good cause according to a set schedule.Merriman tested positive in August of 2006 (or maybe July, I forget). The results were made public in the middle of the season, and he was suspended. The "19 out of 20" tests he passed were the random drug tests, not the good cause drug tests. (He passed all of the good cause tests as well, of course.)

Maybe Merriman had some help for those 19 other tests. I can see a new slogan for the Whizzinator: "Works 19 times out of 20!"
