Shawne Merriman-LB- Chargers Aug. 23 - 6:13 pm et

Shawne Merriman revealed Saturday that his career could be over. In addition to a torn PCL, Merriman has a torn LCL in his left knee.

His knee requires extensive reconstructive surgery. Perhaps Merriman will chance it and play this year, but that would be foolish. His contract is up after the 2009 season and if he has the procedure, Merriman could try continuing his career afterwards. He'd risk more damage by playing on the knee in 2008. He needs to be removed from IDP draft boards.

-- Merriman has Torn PCL & LCL --

Sat Aug 23, 2008 --from FFMastermind.com

fantasy football The San Diego Union Tribune reports Chargers OLB Shawne Merriman (left knee) said today upon his return to Chargers Park that he has a torn lateral collateral ligament as well as posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. The lateral collateral ligament is the further knee trauma Merriman alluded to earlier this week when he initially spoke about the torn posterior cruciate ligament. Merriman has seen specialists in New York and Alabama and plans to fly to Miami early next week to see another before making a decision whether to begin the season or have surgery. "I'm just trying to get an opinion on what I need to do, how bad the injury is and if I can do anything to play," Merriman said. "I'm going to do the best I can to get back on the field and get ready for Carolina." The Chargers have felt all along, based on their medical diagnosis, that Merriman can play when the season begins Sept. 7. HC Norv Turner said his talking with Merriman further buoyed those hopes. "Based on my conversation, I'm optimistic," Turner said. The LCL stabilizes the knee on the outside. The PCL keeps the shin bone from sliding too far backward.

can we substantiate any quotes where merriman actually uses the words... career could be over?

as maurille pointed out in the SP in a similar thread, this seems to be more commentary from other sources (& speculative at that)...

Here's the closest I could find. Essentially, doctors have told him he could suffer a career threatening injury if he plays w/o having corrective surgery.

"It could be career-threatening if I did [play]," Merriman said. "It's a possibility. That possibility is still open."
How did he tear them and get to this point is my question. That story looks like he's planning on playing. It appears he's shopping for a doctor that tells him what he wants to hear.

The issue is related to the stability of the knee. If both ligaments are completely torn, any significant stress or hit could result in additional major injuries -- ACL tear, total knee dislocation with nerve and vessel damage (hello Nap Kaufman), chronic cartilage damage or maybe even a nasty little complex of injuries called posterolateral corner syndrome.

Some of those things are more career-threatening than others, but none of them are particularly good. The fact that he was out on the practice field probably means one and probably both ligaments aren't completely torn, but the stresses that a leg with any laxity will face in play still present a sizable risk.

Agreed.I'm assuming it's the equivalent of driving a car with a wheel missing a few lug nuts. Things should be A-OK until the wheel completely falls off.

I did that in a Ford Windstar once on a Spring Break trip. If it's anything like that, Merriman's going to end up walking on the side of I-75, getting picked up by the local sheriff, then sitting at Hooters for three hours while the local chop shop screws the job up badly enough to need a totally new ride.Or something like that.

Merriman neds to talk to Brian Westbrook, who if I remember right, is completely missing some ligaments, and has been that way his whole NFL career.

He needs to sit out, get things done, and try to move forward post-surgery.

It sounds bad enough that Merriman should have the surgurey. Yet he seems intent to play. This makes me wonder if I should IR him or keep him active in case he does play. Although I cringe to think about him playing through this and I feel uncomfortable playing him under these circumstances if that is what he decides to do.

I think Merriman should get the treatment he needs and work towards coming back healthy. But until he does I am reluctant to IR him as maybe he will be able to play well even being so at risk like this.
