Met Lion LB Ernie Sims tonight (1 Viewer)

Fair & Balanced
I was at BDubs in Canton MI tonight where the Lions do a Sports Radio Show.

The show ended and Sims was standing at the bar..I gave him a good luck man hug for not going 0-16 and he laughed..

Sims was a great guy. This is what concerns me.

I have met two Lion LBs in the last two months. Sims and Jordan Dizon. I am 6-1 and go between 215-220. I am bigger than both of these guys. If you saw Sims you would think he was a SS or DB, if you saw Dizon you would never think he was a NFL LB or player.

I know Sims is a great athlete, but he is small for the NFL. Dizon foget it.

If I saw Joey Porter I think I would know he was an NFL LB.

Sims has a place in this league, Dizon will never play in this league. Matt Millen loved these guys.

These are only my OP, I have no data to back this up.

Sims is a stud, no question. He gets the job done year in and year out (except this year with his shoulder injury). I was never high on Dizon, people thought he was going to take the MLB spot right out of training camp when personally I didn't even think he should have been drafted.

If you saw Sims in person you would be shocked at how small he is. Compared to NFL LBs of course.

I know Sims is listed taller than he prob. really is (6 Ft.) but I guarantee he's much stronger with less body fat than you.. so its not like you're really "bigger" than him.

I'm also "bigger guy" than some LB in NFL (6'2 220) in terms of height but I would never say I'm any bigger esp. in terms of strength. I work out but I dont do it all day like some of these guys and have a course by course food diet either.

8-9 % big isnt 5-6% body fat big plus the speed...

I agree Sims and Dizon are small but there games are based on explosiveness and quickness not brute strength. Sims also OLB so he can have luxury of being bit smaller but I get what you're saying.

I met Ray Lewis about 7 years ago and could def. tell he was NFL LB.

It'll take a smart GM 2-3 years to undo the mess Moron Matt Millen made. Little starting talent on offense or defense, no depth, wasted early picks year after year.

Really a shame it took the Ford son to finally speak up and tell the family to freakin WAKE UP and get rid of the guy. At least now, depending on who runs the show going forward, there's at least a glimmer of hope. With Millen you knew there was no reason to even hope.

:( He was a rookie in 2006.
A year he hasn't led his team in tackles or produced yet??... nope. Year in Year out...
Seems like an odd statement to make for a guy that has a whopping 3 years in the league.
:( Is there anything that can't be argued on message boards?

Sims may look small for an LB in street clothes but looking at the guy in uniform he probably has less than 6% body fat and I'm sure he's as strong as an ox. Sims is one of those guys where is strength and speed make up for his lack of girth. He is not a liability on that defense.

 Maybe being in DET for 3 yrs = eternity. :D Then again maybe he meant to include leading the team in being injured year in and year out. ;)

That is my research topic. I'll report back when I can! ;)

I'm not speaking about Sims, but half the problem is what's in the helmet, not in the rest of the uniform. There were some very fundamental things the Lions could have done to stop Tennessee's run offense, but they lacked the discipline and recognition to do it. They were really poor at gap control. They were all just running to the football and abandoning their assigned areas. You can't do that in the NFL and play solid run defense. Sims, Sam Mills, London Fletcher, and Singletary are just a few examples of smaller guys who can hang physically. It's the ability for the team to play intelligently that is missing in Detroit.

I too saw a couple of Detroit Lions players last week, they were looking to get a job at a Wal Mart for next year

That and they played with no heart. One thing some GM's can not measure very accurately. That entire organization needs to start from scratch. Read recently that ownership was looking at hiring an old school GM.

It's been my experience that a lot of pro athletes look like regular dudes in street clothes. At least the skill guys and DB's/LB's.

For example, I saw Barrett Ruud at my tailgate last year. He was a couple inches taller than me, but if I didn't know who he was I would not believe he was one of the top MLBer's in the NFL. He didn't look all jacked up muscle wise, he looked like a regular guy who worked out.

The guy from Tennessee?
Various names link
The Detroit Lions are compiling a list of candidates for the position of General Manager. Per a league source, the Lions currently are looking at a quintet of old-school candidates.

The list, we’re told, includes former Packers G.M. Ron Wolf, former Giants G.M. Ernie Accorsi, former Texans and Redskins G.M. Charley Casserly, former Bills G.M. Tom Donahoe, and Chiefs V.P. of player personnel Bill Kuharich, who previously served as G.M. of the Saints.

Wolf and Accorsi currently are retired, and Casserly has spent the past two years working as an on-air analyst for CBS. Donahoe hasn’t been heard from since being fired by the Bills earlier this decade.

The job currently is held by Martin Mayhew, who was promoted into the role after CEO Matt Millen was fired in September. It’s unknown whether he’ll be retained by the new regime.

Floyd Reese said he "would Love" The Lion job.. that the Lionss job is a sleeping giant in the NFL.The problem is that the Lions have to get rid of Tom Lewand who is a Ford lackey, then they have to rid themselve of any person who has ever even spoke to Matt Millen and start fresh.

The Lions play a Tampa 2 right? If so, it's a good thing Sims isn't huge. LB's in Tampa 2, as everyone knows, need to be fast. Derrick Brooks isn't huge either.

I have heard that Lewand is a "self preserving " snake behind the scenes. Two weeks ago Lewand was answering questions to the media about a game..like he was the new GM.
