Less than a day after I speculated on the possibility of Michael Griffin practicing at safety, The Tennessean and The Nashville City Paper reported this morning that the Titans are now confirming Michael Griffin has indeed been practicing at safety for a few weeks. Titans coach Jeff Fisher said Griffin would be seeing more playing time, but declined to say at what position or if Griffin would be a starter. Don’t be surprised if you see him start at free safety Sunday, replacing Calvin Lowry.

if he was to get the starting job, any guess as to what kind of production to expect from his college career, or is it just a wait and see?

I only have 2 db's on my roster in a tackle league, and we start 2 + 2 flex spots.

Moving him in the first place was a mistake in the opinion of many around these parts -- not that we're in the union or anything -- and has lengthened the learning curve for him at safety. He may have a little better big play impact than Lowry and could be a nice add in leagues that use return yards (I think he's a PR still), but I don't see him racking up tackles in a defense full of better players (Bulluck, Thornton, Hope) already struggling due to a lack of opportunity.

Lowry's display of an utter lack of ball skills on the Andre Davis touchdown last week was disheartening - and Griffin certainly has ball skills. He's also a very athletic safety with uncanny range and closing speed (see: 2005 Rose Bowl), and he loves to hit. He will be an improvement from Lowry in coverage and should feed into the ultraaggressive mentality of the Titans defense.

 As a Titans fan, I'm very excited about Griffin. Dude will be a stud S. As Jene says, not so much in FF, but a great addition to the Titans D. I won't make predictions on his stats, but the D overall will improve.

That defense has the makings of a future Super Bowl caliber defense.
Maybe. Haynesworth has been a big part of it, and he's in a contract year. I still want to see Odom and LaBoy start to live up to their lofty draft picks. Finnegan is a keeper, and Harper is working out. Thornton and Bulluck are gold. The most important thing is that they have an identity, a mentality - all the great defenses have one, so the hard part is done, now they just need to keep finding players that fit that seek and destroy style.

I think Griffin's upside is pretty limited because he is playing FS on a team where studs like Bullock and Hope are struggling to put up big numbers. I just can't see him putting up big enough tackle numbers to make any kind of impact.
