Michael Haynes DE (1 Viewer)

Injuries, lack of talent, etc...

Haynes is a great guy off the field, I believe he spends a vast majority of his off-season protecting animals, ala Steve Irwin, but on the field he was a big teddy bear.

well didn't he have to have talent to be a first round pick?
Sure, but the college game was easier for him, and he really didn't put in the work to be a player in the NFL. Lots of players throughout the NFL's history hadthe talent to be a first round pick, but it's hard to see what a guy is made of until they step on the field with the big boys.

The Saints I cannot speak for.

With the Bears there was just no place to put him. Even Mark Anderson, a 4th rounder (I think) this year outperformed him in training camp. Too much talent on the defensive line in Chicago. He just didn't fit in.

At least we got Rex with our other 1st rounder that year.

Jury is still out on the one. To this day, if they were going to go QB in the 1st, I wish they would have just kept the pick and taken Leftwich.

He's got a bad back. That's why the Saints cut him. He's now suing the Bears for workman's comp. He hurt his back early in training camp for the Bears and played the last preseason game (I think). Then the Bears cut him, and the lizard lovin' Haynes ended up down in Nawlins. A common thing in the NFL.

Haynes is an extremely intelligent (and sensitive) guy. I don't think that's necessarily a good thing for an NFL player. He did not appreciate that former Bears D-Coordinator Greg Blache used to swear at the players.

When the Bears drafted him, they wanted a beefy DE that could rush the passer, but at the same time, contain the run.

Then when Lovie Smith came the following season, he told all the D-Linemen to drop 20-30 lbs. Haynes did that, but got outplayed by Alex Brown, and the Bears traded for Ogunleye.

Then after being on the inactive list for several games last year, they told him to bulk back up to play DT. He did what they requested - even though he preferred to be traded.

Then in the preseason when Alex Brown hurt his shoulder and Israel Idonije hurt his ankle, they asked Haynes to play DE in the last week of the preseason (after bulking up to play DT).

Then they cut him, and New Orleans picked him up.

Actually, that's not exactly true....The Bears traded down with the Jets.

The Jets took Dewayne Robertson. The Bears selected Rex Grossman, and then when they were on the clock, they traded down ONE spot with the Patriots for their next pick in the first round, and a fourth round pick.

The Patriots then selected D-Lineman Ty Warren.

When all was said and done with the trading down, the Bears ended up with Grossman, Haynes and starting DT Ian Scott.

Actually, it is trueThe Bears had the 4th pick going into that draft. All I said is that if they had intentions of taking a QB with a 1st round pick, which they did with the 22 acquired from the Jets, they should have stayed at 4 and taken Leftwich

Why has this former first round pick been cut by the Bears and Saints?
Because he's not that good. To think they could have had Terrell Suggs or Troy Polamalu in that draft
They could not have had Terrell Suggs because once they traded down, Suggs went before Haynes was picked with the 14th pick. They could have picked Leftwich or Robertson (DT that went to Jets and is average at best) or Suggs with their 1st round pick but then they could not have traded down and would not have gotten Grossman too. While jury is out on Grossman, it is clear that Leftwich & Suggs are average at best, Haynes is a bust and Robertson is average at best too.
