Michael Lewis ask for release (1 Viewer)

49ers SS Michael Lewis has reportedly requested his release.

The Niners haven't granted it yet, though it's probably coming soon. Lewis has been benched for struggling in run support, and San Francisco can go young at the position with rookie Taylor Mays and Reggie Smith. If cut, Lewis could appeal to a team like the Rams. St. Louis is weak at the strong safety spot, and coach Steve Spagnuolo had Lewis in Philadelphia.

Is there any niners homer that can tell if it's going to be Smith or Mays who replace Lewis from now on?

I'm going with Mays on a hunch. I think he impressed the coaching staff with his dedication and enthusiasm. That said, thats a total feeling because I havent heard or seen anything to indicate who it would be, and they certainly like Smith.

From KFFL -

San Francisco 49ers SS Michael Lewis (personal) missed practice Friday, Oct. 1, for "personal reasons" and didn't board the team's flight to Atlanta, reports CSNBayArea.com's Matt Maiocco. According to Lewis' agent, Rodney Williams, Lewis will not return to the team and has asked to be released. Lewis was told Friday that there would be a reduction in his playing time to get "the young guy" on the field. The young guy is presumably FS Taylor Mays.

Sure sounds like Taylor Mays.

Ugg...or not.

Though it appears Mays will eventually be the starter, third-year safety Reggie Smith is likely to get the bulk of the playing time in Atlanta. "The thing is Reggie has been here for three years, so Reggie has a good feel for what we're doing," Singletary said.

On the other hand, Mays, who has mainly been playing special teams thus far, said he's been preparing to play on defense. "I've been ready," he said. "In order to be successful in this defense, you have to toe the line. The guys that are playing are deserving. I'm OK with the situation."

6 tackles and 2 assist for Mays so far, plus his block punt TD!Glad I picked him up!Looks like he's starting.
ditto, although I I didn't start him, definitely next week getting the start next week, will replace the disappointment in Weddle

9 tackles, 2 assists & a blocked punt TD.

One heck of a start... now the question. Is Mays the starting SS moving forward? Lewis is gone, but is Reggie Smith still a threat to take over at SS even after Mays' big game?

Philly coming to town looks like a good matchup this week, but the uncertainty of Mays' job security gives me pause. Jene or Anthony... what are your thoughts?

I also picked him up upon hearing the news and also started him. Def. pleased but just kinda blown about not getting any fantasy points for the touchdown I'm hearing that he scored (didn't see the game).

Mays looked like a stud against the Falcons. Am I crazy or am I the only one who thinks Mays can have a Pat Chung like impact on the 49ers defensive backfield?

I'd love to hear the experts weigh in on Mays' potential for the rest of the year. He's a FA in my league at the moment.

I just went and counted tackles for my own interest, so I thought I'd add it in here:

6 tackles on runners

1 on a throw to rb

3 on te

1 wr downfield

atl ran the ball 29x (inc qb)

gonzalez caught 7 balls

rb caught 5 balls

phi up next
