Middle-aged Dummies are back and bursting at the "themes" to get going! Full theme ahead! (4 Viewers)

I did a theme close to the one Eephus is doing about 10 years ago. I did ladies names in abc order. I can't remember what exactly our draft was about, but my playlist was called Ladies Room. I doubt anyone remembers it.

Good memory. That was the One Word Song Title draft from May 2014

I'm pretty sure there are more one word song titles about women than there are women with one word stage names although once you have an mononymous artist you get to pick from her entire catalog. For what it's worth, my Single(Named) Ladies 31 has seven one word song titles but only one of them is a name.
Another blast from the past. Was part of the rule that the songs were in alphabetical order on the playlist, or was that just my dumb *** doing it for mine?

So a decent pair of cans will also work for this playlist? I've fairly recently invested in a non-entry tier level of Sennheiser which could do with testing

Yes. Headphones - especially open back - can be quite good.
What means this?

I am really interested in this playlist, but also have a ton of questions.

Open backs don't have a solid casing over the ears - the backs are more like louvers.

Closed backs can isolate you more with the music because they shut off the outside world better. Open backs generally give a better soundstage and do the 3d thing more.

They are both good, and opinions are prettymuch 50/50. If there is other noise in the house/room, closed are better though.

Gotcha. A couple years ago I splurged on a pair of Sony noise cancelling headphones, and that is what I use. I love them, but I also don't have much knowledge or basis for that opinion. It is a reason I started listening to more and more music though, and have thought many times that it felt like I was listening to songs I've heard 100x for the first time.

That's prettymuch exactly it. Yea, noise canceling (closed back) can really bring you into their world. Add a little puff puff and...

@jwb - were you going to do a last 5 out?

I would love a couple side by side examples of songs like ones that will be on the playlist vs. ones that you would have in mind that don't have a great mix.

Yeah, there might have been a little bit of that going on too.

I don't know if I will or not. Depends how busy I am the next week.

"not a great mix" is easy though - we were just talking about Pet Sounds in the thread - that's a great example of a highly regarded album, but nothing special audiophile-wise (my opinion anyway, but you never see it on audiophile lists either). Or listen to the Velvet Undergrounds first album... good songs but terrible in production.

Honestly, that's one drawback with good gear - it makes bad recordings sound worse (edit - although pet sounds is hardly a bad recording. It's just not special in a mix sense).

Any other examples I can listen to instead? ;)

Just kidding. I'll give one a listen this weekend.

My MAD31 Afrobeat list has been submitted. I count artists from at least 10 African countries on my list (Nigeria and Ghana having the most representation). I tried spreading to as many different artists as possible. I only have two artists that have multiple songs represented in my 31. As I mentioned, not really strictly Afrobeat and using a liberal use of that term, as a bit of a mix of true Afrobeat and Highlife plus funk/rock/disco from African-born musicians - mostly from the 1970s.

Here is a last five out. Song title includes a link to YouTube, and then link to Spotify right after.

Ghana Freedom (Spotify) - E.T. Mensah (Ghana)

I decided that E.T. Mensah was more straight Ghana “highlife” than Afrobeat, and thought I’d put it in last five out instead. E.T. Mensah was called “The King of Highlife.” This song was released in 1957 and a celebration of Ghana being granted independence that same year, and those who fought for its independence. I thought it could be a good introduction to Highlife as can hear the jazz influences and the prominent use of horns.

Position Pass Power (Spotify) - Shango Dance Band (Nigeria)

The Shango Dance Band was founded by Ojo Okeji, who was once a member of Fela Kuti’s band — he introduced Fela Kuti to Tony Allen. (Will Fela Kuti and Tony Allen show up on my Afrobeat list? I will keep you in suspense!) Okeji left Fela Kuti’s band to join the Nigerian army during the Civil War and formed a band with some of his fellow soldiers. The album that this one is from got a re-release not too long ago. Some good Afrobeat. (Had this one in my Summerpalooza queue too, but went unused.)

Sunday Morning (Spotify) - Amanaz (Zambia)

This one falls more into Zamrock. I’m not sure strictly Afrobeat. I don’t really care, and decided to take a somewhat broad definition while pulling my list together. I decided on another Amanaz song for my list (so, they will show up in my 31), but this one is not far behind.

Africa Boogie (Spotify) - Manu Dibango (Cameroon)

Manu Dibango is another artist that will show in my MAD 31 list. But thought I’d use my last five out to give some love to one of his lesser-listened to cuts that I am partial to.

Vina Vina Malawi (Spotify) - Madalisto Band (Malawi)

I’m not sure how I found them. They are newer than anything on my MAD31 list. Again, I’m not really sure if it’s Afrobeat, but I don’t care. They are a two-person band - YouTube link shows them in action. One of the instruments is a long one-stringed instrument called a “babatone.” The band just has some infectious grooves.

I also considered The Budos Band’s Up from the South (Spotify) to show how a present American band can play 1970s Afrobeat and Afrofunk rhythms to great effect, but between being from Staten Island and that song now appearing in an AT&T commercial every six minutes during the CFP games, decided to pass as you have heard it enough.

This is going to be really fun playlist. I liked them all, and REALLY liked Position Pass Power and Sunday Morning.

@krista4 - I am just about done with S1 of Mad Men, and I would be very surprised if you didn't love this show. If memory serves you like shows that I would put a similar bucket like The Leftovers and Six Feet Under.

Nice! I did love The Leftovers, which is definitely in my all-time top five, but have never seen Six Feet Under.

OK, I think I'm going with Songs With Horns. I was afraid that this had been done before but I can't find a thread. The other challenge I'm facing is that I know I'm going to forget a lot of stuff and this may not accurately reflect my 31favorites. For whatever reason stuff like this is important to me. I know, it's weird. There have just been so many times I've heard a song and said "wow I love the horns in this" but no way I'll remember even 10% of them.

And this is primarily going to be rock songs with horns. Sorry jazz fans.

Well, thanks to my wife I just learned that a saxophone is indeed not a horn.

Tell her that Eephus says woodwinds like saxophones are still horns or else an English horn wouldn't be called a horn.

Don't confuse the poor boy. Reeded instruments are not horns.

31 songs that sound great on a decent 2-channel system - FAQ

What do you mean by a 2-channel system?

I would think everyone knows this but my long experience as a business writer tells me to explain everything... 2 channels means two speakers. Left and right. No sound bar, no 7.1 dolby atmos surround sound or whatnot. We can add a subwoofer (technically now a 2.1 system but that's ok). Classic stereo setup. Note - if you do have a fancy 5.1/7.1 system, just using the two fronts gets you a two channel system. You don't need the rest for music.

What do you mean by "decent"?

Loaded question. Thanks a lot...

"Decent" can mean almost anything you want it to, and can also be affected by your budget (monetary budget, time budget, and also the desire to do this). If you can see yourself spending time just listening to music - and nothing else - well, that's what this is all about. If that's something you enjoy, I promise you, a "decent" setup is either already in your home or on your wishlist.

Your speakers are going to be the real difference makers. We could get into how preamps and amps and sources matter, but honestly, good stuff here is so cheap that it's not really worth discussing (you can buy a Yamaha AS301 for $350, which is a "good enough" 2-channel amp for decent sound. You can use your phone and bluetooth as your source). I do like dedicated 2-channel amps best.

Good speakers can paint a picture with the music. Set up correctly, your two speakers should be able to create an entire soundstage between them. The better the speakers, the better picture it paints. If you're hearing lots of sound from the center (where there is no speaker), you're getting there. Hearing the center and the left and right... that's better. But the real magic happens when you hear stuff all across it, at different depths and volumes. Off center, up front, singers that sound like they are behind each other, etc. Do that with clarity and fullness and a little warmth - at any volume - now you're talking. A really good setup is nothing short of magical. You know it when you hear it.

This also has a little to do with the engineering of the recording. By the 70's, many engineers figured out how to mix records to almost resemble a band when a proper 2-channel system was used. This is why the Beatles or Pet Sounds or such don't really work for audiophile listening (imho).

What gear are you listening on?

pre/amp = Arcam SA20, speakers = JBL HDI 3800 (video review by upscale audio in link). These speakers are amazing. It took me years of buying/selling /figuring out what I liked to get to them. I got them this past summer after a decent price drop from their original MSRP, and they are endgame speakers for me. I have a restored Denon 67L turntable, but I honestly do most of my listening through Apple Music these days.

What kind of songs are you listing?

Mostly stuff you already know (so if you don't have a decent setup, no worries - it's still 31 good songs).

I'm posting songs that just hit nice on my setup. For some songs, it's the vocal performance. For others, it's that "band" mix. Or for some, just how the song hits (note: JBL's are well know for being good "rock" speakers. I find this to be true).

Some of these songs are on "audiophile songs" lists, because they deserve to be there. Others are just things I think sound good on my setup. In my writeups, I'll try to highlight what attracted me to it. There are literally thousands of songs that could be listed, so I'm sure what I think is a great vocal will be surpassed by what you think is a great vocal. That's the beauty of it.

Once I was talking to this guy at an audio gear show, and he said "good audio gear is the best present you can buy yourself". I agree - I get more pleasure out of my music setup than anything else I own.

I'm about half done with my list - it's definitely been fun so far.
Also, @MrsKarmaPolice - you taking notes about this theme and the discussion? ;)

I was finally allowed access to football guys. My theme is Animal Kingdom. The songs had to have an animal in the name or as the subject of the song. I also only picked songs I knew already - no Google or Spotify searches. Only 1 song per artist. I'm looking forward to hearing everyone's lists!
We have 2 strange cats.
I like the mullet on the Mrs. one.
I'm not sure about the mullet, but he looks badass with a mohawk.

A harmonica is not a horn. Nor a grass harp, flute, piccolo, recorder, didgeridoo.

Oh thank god.

Jazz musicians have colloquially referred to saxophones as "horns" for as long as there has been jazz and almost as long as there have been saxophones.

Yeah, but what about that penis-looking flute thing that JML (in his infinite wisdom) linked to and that Don Quixote (in ever-more increasing wisdom) re-posted?

(I was eating, JML. Thanks.)

They’re part of the “horn section” in a live band.

Further research done today, cleared Radio Espantoso (jazz, mambo, funk etc) from Vice City then Playback FM (old school/golden age hip-hop), SF-UR (house), Radio X (alt-rock/grunge) and K-JAH West (reggae, dub, dancehall) from San Andreas. First two games done, got five more stations from SA to do then I can actually get down to ranking the 100

Alright, let's rip off this band-aid I've been avoiding a little bit. Going with an artist I'd guess has a high probability to be on @Yambag's playlist - Metallica it is for this week's deep dive.
No one will blame you if you skip St. Anger.
That said, it's an artist that's solidly on my "eventually maybe" list for a M-AD 31.

I am just as afraid of revisiting Death Magnetic.

But as a wise man once put to song - what don't kill ya make ya more strong!

Anyway, before I mentioned an idea that I still want to do, but it's become beyond obvious that there's no way it'll happen before the deadline. So then, presented to you with all the dedication of a few days of preparation and random searching, and the spirit of others definitely having fun with these themes:
#, Please - 31 Songs with numbers in the title.
With a note that letters aren't numbers, so they need to have "1", not "one", for example. I have a top 36 that all start with a number that look pretty strong, but I'm not 100% sure I'll go with that restriction. Will be posted with the highest number at #31 so I can countdown.

Do Roman numerals count? Lots of Prog greatness with those.

@Mt. Man - if you do that are you going to wade through all these "deluxe box set" editions on Spotify? 5 discs for Kill 'Em All, 7 for Ride the Lightning, etc..

I am almost through the 80s albums...

Death Magnetic had a couple good tracks from what I remember. The newest album was a pleasant surprise.
If I did a Metallica MAD31 not sure anything after Reload would make the cut.
