I think we've got time for a little background and an adjacency.
First the background (from Wiki):
Belle and Sebastian are a Scottish indie pop band formed in Glasgow in 1996. Led by Stuart Murdoch, the band has released twelve studio albums. They are often compared with acts such as the Smiths and Nick Drake. The name "Belle and Sebastian" comes from Belle et Sébastien, a 1966 children's book by French writer Cécile Aubry adapted from a television series of the same name. Though consistently lauded by critics, Belle and Sebastian's "wistful pop" has enjoyed only limited commercial success.

Regarding the adjacency (none of which will be included in my 31 - 1 listing), also from Wiki:
God Help the Girl is a 2009 album by Stuart Murdoch of the band Belle and Sebastian with female vocalists such as Catherine Ireton. God Help the Girl is also the name of the band and the accompanying film released in 2014. The songs are about a Scottish girl who is hospitalized after a nervous breakdown.

Going with an artist who released only five albums in their heyday, which I have listened to all the way through once, a handful of times, or not at all. It’s their live performances that I frequently turn to on YouTube. So this will be as much a discovery for me as it is for you all.

Wow - nice. You’ll probably need to use all their material to fill up the countdown, but nothing wrong with that.

They have 6 albums (one a reunion effort from a few years ago) with at least 10 songs each, and some non-album tracks, so I’ll have enough.

In, just have to determine if the artist I want to use has enough to fulfill the minimum or if I have to go a different direction.

I will apologize ahead of time for making the playlist a lot longer. I am going to take Meatloaf. It will be interesting to see how this goes. I have listed to a lot of his catalog, but never all of it.
Are you sure you wouldn't rather take Steinman? You get the same length songs with more variety of content voice-wise.

I will be taking The Sweet or Sweet after the massive name change.
I’ve enjoyed what I’ve heard but I haven’t explored much, so this will be quite welcome.
The problem with the Sweet is they have 5 different phases to their career with distinct changes in musical style
Phase 1 - Folksy, Bluesish hippyish originals or covers ie the Pre Chinny/Chap phase
Phase 2 - The Chinn/Chapman era. A lot of their hits happened here and where they evolved into one of Glams biggest bands
Phase 3 - The Post Chinny/Chap era. A heavier rock sound, self written mostly, which is very influential with the hair metal acts of the 80s like Def Leppard, Motley Crue and Guns N Roses.
Phase 4 - The post Brian Connolly era. Connolly was a lead singer straight out of central casting, but that comes with lead singer issues. And there were many. Bassist Steve Priest mainly, but also Guitarist Andy Scott took over lead vocals. This sound is distinctly MOR
Phase 5 - The post Steve Priest era, which is basically Andy Scott doing greatest hits tours with the occasional new song. This version is called Andy Scott’s Sweet.

All era’s will have representation in the 31 songs, but phase 2 and phase 3 will dominate

I've got 3 artists I'm still deliberating. I have all 3 playlists pared down to 31 songs but it's a tough call for me.

One of the bands is an extremely well known band that's one of my favorites ever. I suspect almost all participants will know most/all of the songs in my 31.
The other 2 artists are lesser known but not obscure---some will know a fair amount of their work.

I'm going to wait to see if some of you make my decision for me.....
