36. Satellite
This was the one song on the album I didn’t like. I remember sitting in a buddy’s dorm room listening to music and hanging out when it came on, I mentioned that I hated the song. It was his favorite 🤷‍♂️

I essentially included it as my last out because I thought its role in Dave's evolution was pretty cool, as described here: Dave Matthews explains how Robert Fripp inspired his hit song Satellite and developed the guitar's role in his writing

Satellite, from Dave Matthews Band's 1994 debut Under The Table And Dreaming, is a serious workout for a singer/guitarist and turned out to be quite a game-changer for the songwriter in the longer term too.

"Satellite was a challenging lick," reflects Matthews in the video interview with GQ below. "I liked to watch Robert Fripp and how he played. But he has got this crazy way of playing – his hands are all spread out and he gets this coverage. Which is unnecessary if your guitar is tuned traditionally."

Nevertheless, the idea of spreading his fretting hand got him exploring melodic ideas, combined with a desire to break out of traditional rock keys. "Another friend of mine had said, 'Why do rock bands do everything in A and E and C, why don't they ever do anything in A flat or E flat?' And it's because all the chords are down there," adds Matthews. "So that made me think, if I'm doing this weird spread out thing I can do a pattern that works, that looks kind of like Robert Fripp but is unnecessary, and is A flat."

The song ended up being a stepping stone towards a new mindset. "The way I first learned to play it and sing at the same time was like an exercise. I would play it over and over again and I would talk as I was going it, make up silly lyrics to it" remembers Matthews. "It taught me I can separate my voice from my guitar – one could be the marching orders and the other could be singing and dancing, flying around the structure a little bit more."

First (last?) five out for The Beach Boys, apropos on the 4th of July. You may have heard most of these before.

31. Sloop John B
32. Cabinessence
33. Catch A Wave
34. Little Deuce Coupe
35. Fun, Fun, Fun

ETA: the top 31 won’t be nearly as beachy
I am astounded Sloop John B didnt make the list and high at that.
After the covers draft i flogged it relentlessly and can say without hesitation it would have been my #1 choice for the Beach Boys.
I know it will be a strong list and looking forward to it. 👍

Again the #32 song lol. Thought this was gonna be one of your 4 covers.
Another list I am really looking forward to.

Not that you were asking me, but Last Five Out makes more sense with how I compile a list and think of the process. For my M-aD countdowns, I'd make a long list of possibilities. Say I started with 100, for instance; I then start kicking songs off the list. Then I'll get down close to 31, perhaps having 26 "in" and 10 left to be determined. As I go through those 10, five are going to be my last five in and five are going to be the last five that I kick off the list - i.e., "last five out." For me, the terminology has to do with the compiling process.

That's how I always thought of it too. Start with a big list, make cuts as I listen more, then usually there are those last 5-6 tough decisions and songs I had to boot out of my playlist to make 31.

These aren’t necessarily the five that just missed, but a representative collection imo. One cover.

A banger showing off the bass and vibe I love for their live shows

Live, absolutely love the emotion, violin and bass together

Justin messing around and showing off his voice.

Ok, here's my five last out... Susanna Hoffs.

As an FYI, she did a lot of covers with Matthew Sweet. Any songs where he was mostly the lead singer weren't counted,

36. Complicated Girl

35. Some Dreams Come True

34. Lost At Sea

33. Bell Jar

32. Maggie May

Very close to what I did. Pandora, Artist only, most are already thumbed up but I’ll start a separate playlist. Jimmy had over 100 on the list, Blue October has 82. But that includes live versions of some songs.
Then I make the list on excel and sort - must include / probably / possibly.
The possibly list had a few that I grew to like more during this process. Enough to probably call them top 10 now.

OINGO CUTS

These aren't actually my last few cuts. Most of mine are from the albums I lean heavy on in the countdown and I want anybody a green to them as I was a better feel of me last December. These are a few outside their usual sound or on albums I don't lean on as much but I still think are worth a listen and blurb about.

Home Again was a painful cut, as this was the one Oingo song I saw on my daughter's playlist (still no Dino). We had fun listening in the car, but in the end I understood that's why it was sticking around. I like it, but like the rest of the Boi-Ngo album it's a bit repetitive and synthy. It was #31 when I posted my intro but was replaced by yet another from the Good for Your Soul album with the dark inappropriate humor that surprised me when I dug in.

An interesting miss would be how I describe their last album from 1994. This was '94? Such an odd album, and I am trying to picture what it's reception was like around that time. Insanity is the album opener and one that was on my initial playlist. It got cut, but there is one more song respresenting this album that made it.

I got a little confused on the Danny Elfman album So-Lo about which were Oingo tracks and which weren't. In the end the more I listened the more it didn't matter. I found it a bit lacking and even this track reminds me of an earlier Oingo track I like more. Gratitude is a fun tune and shows up on their live shows a bit, but it got booted from the first playlist.

In the end, Little Girls is a bit too much even for me. In hindsight, it is serendipity that I started with the album that I did. If I started with their last one, I'm not sure I would have been as driven to continue. This is the opener for their debut, and I wonder if I would have been as driven to listen more, combined with the Kinks cover that I couldn't skip fast enough. There are a few on here I really like and are on the playlist and one that I adore. But overall not my favorite album and despite my WTF reaction that put it on my playlist it got cut in the end.

Chvrches

#32-36 First Five Out

#32 - Strong Hand
The only one I was desperately trying to find a place for but couldn’t. Song quality is maybe a bit lower, but that fan video cracks me up everytime

#33 - I Would Die For You (Prince Cover)
The only cover I wanted to include but it lost out to ones with better sound quality and that were better covers

#34 - Bow Down
This one was on my list until the last minute. It’s a good song. I like it. But I like others better

#35 - Warning Call
Chvrches have a strong relationship with the gaming community. I think this is their first song written specifically for a game. Others had a stronger case for inclusion

#36 - Make Them Gold
Just one of about 20 songs that are a tier down from my top 31. On another day it makes my list.

I guess it’s a personal choice. I like Sloop a lot, just less than many of their other songs and less than others do. Really just shows how incredibly deep their catalog is.

Again shows different tastes. Big fan and would have been way up there for me, although I admittedly don’t have an overly deep knowledge of Boingo’s catalog. Looking forward to changing that though with your list.

Following the idea that the Dio list has a bit of retrospective to it, here's a somewhat tailored Last Five Out List.

Elf- Ain't It All Amusing (from Carolina Country Ball, 1974) Youtube link

Black Sabbath - Children of the Sea (from Heaven and Hell, 1980) Youtube Link

One Night in the City (from The Last in Line, 1984) Youtube Link

Dio - Master of the Moon (from Master of the Moon, 2004) Youtube Link

Heaven & Hell - Bible Black (from The Devil You Know, 2009) Youtube Link

Definitely a few tough cuts. And by "a few", I mean around a dozen.

In 1994 I had no idea Oingo Boingo still existed.

not that I've really thought about it, but I guess I just referenced it the way that you see the NCAA BB tourney team selection process referenced.

@John Maddens Lunchbox - or your evil twin, I can't keep track. The Sweet link you had didn't seem to work, so I added another to finish the list . Please let me know if there is a different one you prefer.
I assume this is the Chvrches one.
If you can find a link in Spotify, go for it. All I could find was an “episode” or whatever it is called. You had to manually click play.
I have the youtube one anyway

It was a hard cut, and I will fully admit that part of the cut was because I have been listening to these MAD31s ideas in the car with the kiddo. I think if it was just me with the headphones and sharing with you fine folks, it would have made the playlist. My #31 is one that has a few lines I found dark in a similar way, but for whatever it was slightly better listening in the car. It's one I saw a lot after I got into and looked at "best of" lists. Mine is the minority opinion for sure. I will probably continue the streak of doing 44 for my final playlist I share, and Little Girls will be on that. Like my Dino Jr. list i'd love any feedback from people who have been long time fans, or at least knew more than 2 of their songs before this.

No, it was Sweet. It was greyed out when I saw it. Now that you mention it, the Chvrches one looked a little odd too.

In MAD31 news, my wife and saw @kupcho1 's previous artist The Decemberists. Holy **** - I was blown away. One of my favorite and most surprising concerts I've been to period. No small part is due to these adventures and your playlist. They played many of the ones I Ioved from that list. I was obsessed with the drummer and couldn't stop watching. My wife thought she was annoying.

Next up we are seeing Spoon. Again, being more excited because I know and love way more songs. I am establishing street cred at the store with the 20 somethings at the store by giving them playlists and music ideas. Spoon is one I throw around a lot with rave reviews. Fitted Shirt and Mystery Zone are the biggest hits. As I typed that, I clicked on Anything You Want and had the biggest smile on my face.

My son works at the same store as I do. We were bsing the other day, and he expressed his annoyance that two of the workers were blabbing for "a couple hours" about how good his dad's musical taste is. He will find out soon enough - we started our Spotify Blend a few weeks ago and I have been working on my rap playlists to win him over too. I am going to get him off that annoying "high hat" noise I hear in his rap if it kills me. ;) One of the artists I have fallen in love with during this project is the current front runner for MAD31 Part 4 if we get there.

Happy 4th, MAD31ers!!!

31. Bitter Wine
Album: Fanny (1970)
Writer: Nickey Barclay
Lead vocals: Nickey Barclay

One of six songs on Fanny's debut that Nickey Barclay wrote or co-wrote, Bitter Wine is a song she has disavowed. In a 2003 interview, she called it "oh so sweet" and said she hated it for the same reasons she hates the work of Carole King and Joni Mitchell: "I find the whole Femme Lite genre to be just too, too, too, TOO damned WET. Where is the real passion in all these? Nowhere, as far as I’m concerned."

The opening harmonies (which resurface during the chorus) may indeed be too precious, but otherwise, this is a song that boasts a strong melody and structure, a bridge that grabs your attention with its gravitas, and, most thrillingly, a fantastic coda (starting at 2:25) with slashing guitar lines, propulsive cowbell and swirling organ -- I wish we could hear more after the fade. I don't find it to be too sweet, too light or too dispassionate at all.

If this song was ever played live, there is no surviving evidence of it.

At #30, another Barclay composition that is definitely not "sweet" or "light."

Oh, I forgot the other MAD31 connection. About the only thing I like about meeting up with family is they have an awesome game, HITSTER. I can't recommend this game enough if you have Spotify. It's simple - scan the card, it plays the song, you place it on the timeline. We do 20-30 secs. Anyway, Ballroom Blitz came on. I couldn't for the life of me come up with the name, but I said - "dammit, it's a band with a short one syllable name. Krokus??" Apologies, @John Maddens Lunchbox.

Ballroom Blitz came on. I couldn't for the life of me come up with the name
stoner
How dare you!

What is frustrating to everyone is it's a game I excel at (yes, even while stoned on edibles. Not sure how you people surprise family functions with the inlaws...) because it's more about clips of music, not lyrics. Also, they have a surprising number of songs that are on movie soundtracks, and a good portion of the game is knowing when a song came out. So when I steal songs and points because I randomly know when Flashdance and Dangerous Minds were released....

Strand of Oaks - "End in Flames" (2009)

Strand of Oaks is a long-running solo project by singer/songwriter Tim Showalter. Tim was born in Goshen, IN in 1982. He began performing music under the Strand moniker while he was a schoolteacher in Wilkes Barre, PA.

"End in Flames" is the first song of his debut album Leave Ruin. It's an autobiographical song that connects the literal flames of losing his house in Wilkes Barre to a fire and the metaphorical ones of his wife Sue having an affair around the same time. Leave Ruin didn't bring the music industry crawling to Tim's feet but it got him a little notice and the first album out of the way. He and Sue stayed together; she got a new job in Philadelphia so they moved there in the "New Brooklyn" era of the late-2000s. He was able to make friends in the burgeoning local scene helped his career and artistic development.

It's obviously the earliest song of his on my list. It would have been somewhere near the bottom of the list anyway but I just slotted it at #31 for narrative purposes. It's a pretty straightforward confessional acoustic ballad from an album that I seldom listen to. Tim is not one of those artists who emerged on debut as a fully formed musician. His songwriting and guitar chops have definitely improved over his fifteen year career.

Dave MatthewsTau837Let You Down

"Let You Down" is a song by DMB from their 1996 album Crash. Known for its mellow and intimate feel, it offers a softer, more introspective side of the band compared to some of their more upbeat and complex tracks.

Written by Dave, the song is a tender and vulnerable song. The lyrics convey feelings of regret, longing, and unfulfilled desire. Matthews sings about the sorrow of feeling inadequate and the yearning to be closer to someone. The simplicity and honesty in the lyrics resonate deeply with listeners.

Musically, "Let You Down" features a gentle acoustic arrangement. Dave's guitar playing is complemented by Stefan Lessard's smooth bass lines and subtle touches from Boyd Tinsley's violin and LeRoi Moore's saxophone. The song has a laid-back, almost lullaby-like quality, with a soothing melody and a relaxed tempo.

One of the unique elements of "Let You Down" is the whistling section by Dave, which adds a whimsical and personal touch to the song. This feature further enhances the song's gentle and reflective atmosphere.

Dave's vocal performance in "Let You Down" is particularly tender and sincere, adding to the song's emotional impact. His delivery captures the essence of vulnerability and longing.

I loved this song from the first time I heard these lyrics:

I have no lid upon my head
But if I did
You could look inside and see
What's on my mind, oh it's you

It always makes me think fondly of my wife. ♥️
