Middle Aged Dummies - Artist - Round 3 - #1's have been posted! (3 Viewers)

Wow, 5 cats. You’re a great sister/SIL.
My BIL might think differently. My sister took two colony cats that were dumped out there by some cruel person, and one of them (Eddie) is deaf, and he strolls through the house hollering at the top of his lungs on a regular basis, cause he can't hear himself. Whenever I see my BIL he often says, "Thanks, simey," in a very sarcastic tone. I didn't ask her to take them. She said she would foster, but they eventually ended up as family members.

My top 5 from Round 31
Hate Me - I either knew this one beforehand or they have another one that sounds similar, but regardless, a great start to this list.
Sister Awake
Beer in Mexico - Thanks to @MAC_32 for proceeding wit this list, I feel I will enjoy many songs.
Pickup Truck Song
Roadhouse Blues

My April Wine tune - The Band Has Just Begun - was one of about 6 that I was unfamiliar with until creating my list. It has a nice driving rhythm to it and I dig the guitar sound.

The 30's

Medal Stand
Gold Blue October - Schizophrenia, not even sure this got a minute in before realizing this was probably taking the top prize this round.
Silver Belle & Sebastian - Your Cover's Blown, although this tried to give it a good run
Bronze Tea Party - Temptation, way too early to say but I think others are gonna be hard pressed to over-take this group for total medal count
Honorable Mention DMB - Gravedigger (acoustic), familiarity aside, extra credit for choosing the better version vs studio

Count
Tea Party - 1 gold, 1 bronze
Blue October - 1 gold
The Slambovian Circus of Dreams - 1 silver
Belle & Sebastian - 1 silver
Stray Cats - 1 bronze

Thanks for bringing it back
Beach Boys - Help Me Rhonda, due to my parents over-play I developed a blind spot for most of their pop music so my objective for this exercise is to bring back the best ones. This fit.

Classics
STP - Big Bang Baby, due to my arbitrary medal standards it's unlikely these guys will qualify, but it may help that heavy hitters are coming out first. Both this and Plush (acoustic) would easily be in my top 10.

really like both tracks so far, keep them coming!
April Wine- The Band has just Begun- not a track I'm familiar with but liked it

Special Mention

Shellac-
really liked it when I listened while stoned last night but not something I 'd play at a party or in a road trip. Pretty sure I got zoned out and hypnotized which resulted in my leaving the last group of artists off my post lol

Both surprised and not surprised at the Tea Party love so far. Keep in mind the first two songs so far are actually in my top 15 but I think starting this off with a couple bangers is good for a band that's new to a lot of people. But if you liked those two, you'll probably like a lot more of what's to come. We still haven't heard much of their blues influenced songs or songs that I feel are heavily Zeppelin influenced.

I feel like they could've made some kind of presence in the states, but they apparently had a terrible record label early on, and although unverified, Trent Reznor apparently had interest in producing one of their albums but they declined.

Songs from #30 that I know and like included the tracks by Sweet, The Moody Blues, STP (though I remember asking why Weiland's voice had gotten so raspy all of the sudden when Big Bang Baby came out), Curtis Mayfield, Bryan Ferry (though I didn't recognize it by title), The Beach Boys, The Cure, The Doors and EWF (love that their first two selections have been from I Am).

New-to-me ones that stood out included:
Blue October, Tea Party and Slambovian -- Yeah, I think these artists are all in my wheelhouse
Belle and Sebastian -- Boomin'
Mitski and Iron and Wine -- Wasn't expecting something so ... quasi-rollicking ... from both of them
Jerry Jeff Walker -- This is darn good cowboy music
Destroyer -- This track sounds shoe-gazey without overwhelming the senses

I don't think I'd heard April Wine's This Could Be the Right One in almost 40 years. Both the song and video are very much of their time. And no, the intimidating-looking bald guy isn't a hired thug, that's their drummer.

Gonna Make It Alone is the "Gimme Some Money" of Dio's career!

Round 31

Favorite Knowns:

Hate Me- Blue October- Haven't heard that song in prob a decade... forgot all about it. love revisiting it
Fox on the Run- Sweet- Certified Banger!
Plush- STP- One of my favorite songs from one of my favorite bands of the 90s. cant wait to see your list shake out
Lay you Down- DMB- another countdown I cant wait to see. Like this one (Sidenote: Grey street would have been high on my list)
Roadhouse Blues- The Doors-What a way to start a countdown! Love this song, love this band. Went through a huge phase in college

Favorite Unknowns:

Sister Awake- The Tea Party- I liked this one quite a bit
The Trans-Slambovian Bipolar Express- The slambovian Cirus of Dreams- Holy #### this is right up my ally. Cant wait to hear more!
End in Flames- Strands of Oak- I like this one. They sound like a band Im going to enjoy
Didnt We Deserve to Look at You The Way You Really Are- Shellac -Long Title even longer song! what a way to start a countdown! Really Liked this one!
Two Slow Dancers- Mitski- nice and chill sound

On to the 30s

Round 30

I actually think this was my favorite round of any of the MAD's I've participated in. I truly enjoyed nearly every song. Picking 5 favorites is tough but I'll try

Schizophrenia - 2 for 2!
Temptation - Great tune. I’ve heard this one before. Was it not one of their biggest hits?
Your Cover’s Blown- LOVED this one
One More Night With You - fun tune
For Your Precious Love - cross between Can’t Help Falling In Love and Unchained Melody 6/8 and 3/4 time signatures always catch my ear
Few Good Stories - Yeah, I’m going to want to listen to more of his stuff This one sounds a lot like WTSGD

(Yeah, I know that's 6!) I'd be happy to thrown on this full playlist any time, on it's own

As for my April Wine Tune. This Could Be The Right One is kind of a cookie cutter 80's tune and the most recent song of theirs that made my list. I, unfortunately, ran out of time and never got much into the "newer" releases.

Selections seem to be fairly limited, alas.

I've had an audience tonight listening to the playlist. I've been here at my sister's house for a couple hours hanging with the cats for a bit. I brought over my laptop to listen to the music. I was able to to get Masie into her favorite room at lunch, and I put wet and dry food in there, and it was barely touched. Tonight I let her out, and she came downstairs doing a happy dance when her dinner was about to be served, and when I put some fresh food down for her, she ate about 3 bites and walked away. This very much reminds me of when my late cat, Cole, went on his hunger strike. I think there is more that needs to be explored with Masie at the vet, and I'm pretty sure my sister feels the same way. She said that it has been three weeks now that she has been acting this way. Two more weeks of this can't be good. She gave me the green light to take her back to the vet if I feel it is needed. I already feel that way. I don't like when stuff happens to her critters on my watch. In the last 5 years, I've had to take one cat in for a UTI, and a few months ago another one in for a blocked anal gland, which isn't common in cats, and then there was the time with her dog Dino. About five years ago, my sister and her family left on Christmas night to go to Charlotte for a few days to see my BIL's family. Their late dog, Dino, decided during the night to eat some wrapping paper that was on the floor, chew some boxes that the wrapping paper had been on, and eat a cat toy. The next morning when I came over there was puke all over the floor. When he tried to drink water he would throw it up within a minute, and he was panting. I called my sister, and she agreed he needed to go to the vet. They did XRays and saw all the trash blocked in his intestines, and said he needed emergency surgery. Dino was old, and the vet said his chance of making it was 50/50. The vet talked to my sister on the phone, told her the deal, she Ok'd the surgery, and they left Charlotte immediately, and The Dinonator survived the surgery! My sister and Dino's love story started when she had found him sitting on the side of the road one day, and she took him to the vet to see if he was chipped, and he was. Turned out he had been surrendered to the animal shelter, and he had apparently escaped. My sister did not want to send him back to the shelter, and he would likely have been put down, because he was heart worm positive. She ended up keeping him, and they had an incredible bond, and he was around 2 when she found him and lived into his teens. He was the funniest looking dog. He was reddish blonde, and had a torso like a lab, and short legs like a hound. His face looked like he could have some boxer in him. Whenever I'd walk him when they'd be out of town, people always asked what kind of dog he was, and I'd always say the kind that turns the ladies heads. :-)

Shellac- really liked it when I listened while stoned last night but not something I 'd play at a party or in a road trip. Pretty sure I got zoned out and hypnotized which resulted in my leaving the last group of artists off my post lol
I saw Shellac play this song live once. It was 25 minutes long. They stopped when their drummer Todd broke a snare. They dedicated their set to Cheer Accident, who once played the coda of their song "Fillet O' Nod" for 2 hours or so. (I saw Cheer Accident play it at a skatepark in the Chicago burbs for approximately 45 minutes.)

I liked everything from list 30. A few morning thoughts...

- I love the sound and atmosphere in "Lay Myself Down" by Mazzy Star. I love the strumming, tambourine, use of the pedal steel, and the vocals.
- Dig "Big Bang Baby." Tiny Music... is one of my favorite albums by STP.
- "Your Cover's Blown" is good. Belle and Sebastian are one of those bands that has stayed consistently good over the years (decades).
- "Don't Stop the Dance" by Bryan Ferry reminds me of my college days. His music always sounds so clear.
- Love the swinging in Brian Setzer Orchestra's "One More Night With You."
- Stranded Oaks "Harder Love" has an 80s vibe to me, and I like it.
- "Spider" by Oingo Boingo is good. I remember their name more than their music. I've never listened to them much, and I like what I've heard so far.
- "Lit from Underneath" is a nice instrumental by Andrew Bird.
- "The Devil Never Sleeps" by Iron and Wine is good stuff. I especially like that piano.
- "Moonlight Drive" reminds me of riding in a van in Cape May, NJ, in the summer of 1981. The Doors had a unique sound, and are one of my favorites from that era.
- I like the harmonica in "Tink" by TSCOD.
- I also like when Dave Matthews goes acoustic like in "Gravedigger."
- Fanny has that 70s rock sound on "Rock and Roll Survivors." I like that percussion part around the 3 minute mark.
- Mitzki tells Fanny to hold her curlers, and rocks out in "Townie."
- "Little Willy" by Sweet is a willy fun song.
-"For Your Precious Love" by The Impressions is great slow R&B.
- EWF gets funky with "In the Stone."
- "Girl From Outside" has a trance like sound about it with its beat and guitar riff. outside I didn't notice, that your hair is really great! OH has a great mane.
- "It's In Your Heart Now" is another song that has an 80s vibe to it. I find the music sorta dreamy. It's good.

I'm out of time. I'll finish later.

Better late than never. This is the song that kind of started the Doors (although it's on their second album). But when Ray and Jim met on that beach, and Jim said he was writing songs and Ray said "sing me one", and Jim closes his eyes and sings "Let's swim to the moon, let's climb through the tide, penetrate the evening that the, City sleeps to hide", Ray was smitten. To him, they were the best lyrics he'd ever heard, and he knew he had to start a band with this guy.

Robbie gets a cool bottleneck sound here too, making this song pretty unique. Here's some cheesy 60's made-for-television lip-synching too.

Known Artists:

STP: Great song!
DMB: Bravo for the acoustic version of Gravedigger, better than the studio one. It's a song that is also impactful live.
Cure: As a big Cure fan, not sure why I have not heard this before. Also not sure how I feel about it.
Doors: Classic, love this scene from the movie.
Judas Priest: Another classic.

Favorites From Artists Not Known:
Blue October: 2 for 2, currently regretting not seeing them in concert a few months ago when I had the chance.
Oingo Boingo: Big departure from song 1, impressive.
Brian Setzer: Always kidna dug his stuff, glad I get exposed to more in this countdown
Strand of Oaks: Also 2 for 2.

April Wine: Great quintessential 80's tune, loved it.

Curtis MayfieldDon QuixoteDo Do Wap Is Strong in Here, by Curtis Mayfield
I typed this one up while watching the movie last night. Both the Short Eyes soundtrack and film were pretty-well received critically. Unfortunately, things were a different story commercially. 1977 was a year for getting away from things, with disco taking over music; not to mention, Pauline Kael’s review of Short Eyes appeared in the same article as her review of a new hit escapist film: Star Wars.

A prison drama about someone charged for pedophilia (and how the other prisoners may try to exact prison justice on such a person) may have not really been in tune with what audiences were looking for (then or even now). It is based on a play written by Miguel Pinero, who wrote it while he was serving time in Sing Sing (after previously serving time in Rikers), and filmed in The Tombs.

The commercial failure was extra bad news for Curtis Mayfield because his Curtom Records helped produce the film — the losses from it played a big role in Curtom’s demise.

But the Short Eyes soundtrack has what I’d consider Mayfield’s last great funk songs. The moment where “Do Do Wap…” hooks me is around 2 minutes in — that is where Rich Tufo’s strings explode, followed by Mayfield’s wah-wah, and then the chorus with a gospel-like clapping and chanting that continues to the end with the conga flourish. Lyrics fit with some of harsher prison themes in the movie, around pent up sexual frustrations and prison fears.

Mayfield has an acting role in the movie as a prisoner, and sings this song in the movie. You can watch the movie clip here (also has a younger Mark Margolis (aka Hector Salamanca) at the end, and Freddy Fender).

The movie is available to stream on Tubi or Kanopy. As I mentioned last night, the movie is pretty intense; it is good, but some scenes will be hard to forget. The clip above does feel a bit out of place in watching the movie, as otherwise a pretty gritty character drama. Not as bad as “Jailhouse Rock”, but reminded me of that.

29. Wonderful Feeling
Album: Fanny Hill (1972)
Writer: Jean Millington
Lead vocals: Jean Millington

Wonderful Feeling is one of the most overtly pop songs in Fanny's catalog, and could have been a hit with better promotion (or if the band's label had taken it more seriously). Its sound reflects two of Jean Millington's biggest influences: the Filipino pop music she grew up with, and the Beatles, who were among the inspirations for her and her sister to form a band. It boasts a gorgeous melody and a lilting arrangement complete with Harrison-inspired slide guitar from June Millington. Also contributing to the Beatle-y vibe is that the Fanny Hill album was recorded at Apple Studios with Geoff Emerick serving as engineer; he also filled that role for some Beatles records.

Wonderful Feeling was selected as the second single from Fanny Hill but did not chart. The single version is slightly different from the album version, and both appear on the band's box set. They sound pretty much identical to me, other than that the single version appears to be slightly "sweeter" and "softer". Exactly what was done to make it so, I couldn't tell you. The album version is what's linked above and on the playlist.

The only documented live performance of this song is from a show in Cleveland that makes up the Fanny: Live in 1972 album that is out of print and, other than the four tracks that also appear on the box set, is not on YouTube or Spotify. (Almost all tracks from Fanny Hill appear in this set.) Presumably it made it into other setlists when Fanny Hill was the current record, but it was not performed on any of their TV appearances, which make up the bulk of the live material that can be found on the internet.

Single version: https://open.spotify.com/track/0oF4qexACGiWWWv9mPR46i?si=bdc1e4e425584195

At #28, we return to rocking, especially nocturnally.

#29. Fly Me High (single, 1967)

Part II: The Moody Blues Mark II

Dateline: London, 1966

The departure of front man Denny Laine and bassist Clint Warwick at the same time would prove to be the moment of serendipity that the band needed; Warwick was replaced by Ray Thomas' childhood friend and former bandmate John Lodge, and instead of getting a like-for-like, R&B-oriented replacement for Laine, Justin Hayward was brought in. Hayward had been recommended to the band by Eric Burdon, and his more contemporary yet folksy vibe began the band's pivot away from R&B and toward a more pop-like aesthetic. Fun fact about Hayward: before joining the band, he had been in a group called the Wilde Three, named after leader Marty Wilde, father of future pop star Kim Wilde.

At first, the new lineup attempted to continue performing R&B covers and R&B inspired original material, but it clearly wasn't working, as demonstrated in the form of the shrinking venue sizes they were able to book, until they found themselves on the 'cabaret circuit'. At one such gig, the band was confronted backstage by an audience member who scathingly criticized their performance to their faces. Justin Hayward would later rightfully recall in an interview, "We were originally a rhythm-and-blues band, wearing blue suits and singing about people and problems in the Deep South. It was OK, but it was incongruous, getting us nowhere, and, in the end, we had no money, no nothing." Collectively, they decided to double down on recording and performing original material only. Additionally, whether it happened by request or the Universe stepping in again, Decca Records staff producer Tony Clarke was brought on board, presumably to see if there was any way to salvage their career and make Decca some money. As we will see over the next 15 or so picks, Clarke did unlock them, shaping and guiding their sound and trajectory for their next eight albums over the next ten years.

Fly Me High was released as a single in early 1967 and is newbie Justin Hayward's first contribution as well as the new lineup's first single. Despite getting airplay, it failed to chart. I didn't know about this song until discovering it when I started exploring their catalog in college. I like it, though I can see how it would get overlooked among all the other superlative music that came out around the same time. Maybe the double entendre wasn't deep enough to get past establishment types and the hippie flower children the song speaks to weren't buying records.

Up next: y'all are going to scratch your heads, at least until you read the write-up.

STP #29 - Atlanta
Album - No. 4 (1999)

This is a darker, brooding song that Weiland wrote about his first wife while they were in the process of getting divorced. It’s a song about love lost, the pain that lingers, and the memories that remain. To me, the vocals from Scott are reminiscent of Jim Morrison here.

This song has always stood out to me due to the emotion in the vocals and introspection in the lyrics.

She lives in a bungalow
She kills me with rosegarden thorns
She waits for me
My love is unusual
It's painted with roses and thorns
With her I'm complete
………………………
She comforts me when
The candles blow out
The cake has grown mold
But the memories are sweet
The laughter's all gone
But the memories are mine
The Mexican princess
Is out of my life

The Beach Boyszamboni"You Still Believe in Me"
From the bounciness of "Break Away" and "Help Me, Rhonda", we shift to the introspective and wistful "You Still Believe In Me" from Pet Sounds (editor's note: there will be more bounce later on). With Brian taking lead vocals here, the song allegedly reflects his marital struggles at the time with his then-wife Marilyn. The Wrecking Crew participated en masse here, with 13 total session musicians playing harpsichord, clarinets, 12-string electric guitars, timpani, finger cymbals, pianos, bass, and naturally, bicycle horn. The song's intro was created by plucking a piano's strings with a bobby pin.

I mentioned the Beach Boys vs Beatles a few pages back, and much has been made of the friendly rivalry between the two behemoths. By most accounts, after hearing Rubber Soul, Brian Wilson was inspired to bring the BB to a new level, hence the development of Pet Sounds. And in turn, the Beatles, particularly Paul, were so enthralled by PS that they upped their own game with Sgt. Pepper's. Back to "You Still Believe In Me", I'll end with Paul's own quote a few decades later about the song: "I love that melody. That kills me, that melody. [The first verse] That's my favorite, I think. The way that's arranged, where it goes away very quietly. I was in the car the other night, and I was telling the kids, saying, "wait, wait, here it comes." And then it comes back, and it's so beautiful right at the end, comes surging back in these multi-colored harmonies. Sends shivers up my spine. That's one of my favorite tracks."

Blue October-OZ-Sexual Power trip
Apologies if you’re listening with your kids.

I'm sorry for the way I treated you
I'm stuck in my ways to just run
In the opposite way when things get comfortable
I'll keep on licking till your flavor is gone
But It's getting more impossible
To keep a straight face
And be trusted with I love you (one big lie)
Yes, I Love you
So don't trust my words when I'm in the bed with you
I'll bring the message, but the message gets lost
Yeah you opened your legs and baby
And maybe I promised you
Well you didin't notice that my ankles were crossed

Like most of their songs, there’s no hidden message here. Stop ****ing up your relationships.

Chvrches

#29 - Dead Air

Producer - Iain Cook/Chvrches
Writer - Chvrches
Album - The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 (soundtrack)
Year - 2014
Notes - Lorde (Royals) was approached by the Producers to curate the Mockingjay soundtrack. Martin Doherty of Chvrches revealed that the group wrote "Dead Air" in approximately two to three days. He also mentioned that Lorde instructed them not to make the track "too downbeat". The group took inspiration from the "deliberate choir vocals" of the 1998 song "Cry Little Sister", taken from The Lost Boys soundtrack.

Next Up - Another song that is reasonably well know by the band, but I find it a bit average. Deserves a spot, but only as high as #28.

list 30 continued...

- Blue October is new to me in this. I do believe I 👂 a violin in "Schizophrenia," which I like. I looked at the year it came out (2000) and saw other song titles, and I'm curious if Consent To Treatment is a concept album.
- The Tea Party is new to me, too. I like the music in "Temptation," especially the intro. At times I can hear the Mark Lenegan and Jim Morrison comparisons.
- I know who Kenny Chesney is, but I don't know any of his music or what he sounds like. "Few Good Stories" is a nice laid back tune.
- "Help Me, Ronda" is classic beachy Beach Boys. I didn't know "Breaking Away" from the 31's, and like it.
- I like the strings in Susanna Hoffs' "Raining."
- Like that intro to "Turbo Lover" by Judas Priest.
- I remember the The Cure's "Purple Haze" from the covers countdown. It's trippy sounding, and very different than the original.
- There are parts of "The Mother We Share" that reminds me of Taylor Swift.
- I was not expecting this doo *** sound to come out of Ronnie Dio on "Gonna Make It Alone." He's good at it!
- "This Could Be The Right One" by April Wine reminds me of MTV. It's a good tune.
- "Go Now" is an oldie goldie by The Moody Blues. It's nice to hear it again.

Belle and Sebastiankupcho1Sister Buddha
Sister Buddha is from the soundtrack to Days of the Bagnold Summer (2019), a film starring people I've never heard of doing things I'm not interested in.
But the song's good! I particularly like the opening as it has such a summer feel.

From songtell
The song "Sister Buddha" by Belle and Sebastian explores themes of self-discovery, seeking fulfillment, and finding solace within oneself.
In the verses, Sister Buddha is portrayed as someone who is searching for something that brings her excitement and a sense of purpose. She takes the all-night bus, ventures out of her comfort zone, and wakes up in unfamiliar places. There is an inner longing, an itch that she wants to scratch, to find something that satisfies her. This search extends beyond external appearances, encompassing her face, clothes, and skin. It implies a deeper desire for something meaningful in her life.
The chorus suggests that Sister Buddha, or anyone in a similar situation, should step beyond their selfish thoughts and embrace the goodness within themselves and others. It encourages her to look beyond the tangible and connect with the inherent kindness that lies within humanity. If God seems elusive or distant, the lyrics urge her to fall upon her own inner soul, embracing the love and compassion she possesses.

And if God won't show her face
Fall upon your loving soul's embrace

The Slambovian Circus of DreamsYambagBeez (I Know Where the Beez Have Gone)
This was one of the first Slambovia songs I ever heard and it immediately got stuck in my head, leading me to discovering the band’s catalog. A really fun aspect of the live shows are Joziah’s ramblings. He is a natural storyteller and is always good for some laughs. Here is the now famous story of how he came up with the idea for the first single, Beez (I Know Where the Beez Have Gone), from their latest album, A Very Unusual Head.

“I convinced Tink that if I stop mowing the lawn, it might help the bee situation,” he said. After setting aside the mowing task, Longo said, “The backyard got to be about waist deep (with) weeds and clover and stuff. All of a sudden, honestly, the yard was full of bees.” He said a rock and roll specter also helped boost the songwriting process for “Beez.” “I had this experience of the ghost of John Lennon sitting next to me in the yard,” Longo said. “I co-write a lot with ghosts … I felt the ghost of John Lennon with me and I did a co-write with him. “Then I started having this experience of the bees and what it meant and their buzzing and I and the bees kind of communicated … in my imagination.” “Everybody does these mantra sounds and stuff,” Longo said. And the bees suggested he buzz like them as his mantra. So he did. “I started doing the buzz with the bees,” Longo said.
