Middle Aged Dummies - Artist - Round 3 - #1's have been posted! (2 Viewers)

My original purpose of including this song on the list was that this is the first example of the band using a Mellotron, an early synthesizer which Mike Pinder had finally gotten his hands on after being introduced to it when he was briefly employed as a development engineer for the company that sold them, Streetly Electronics, from his hometown of Birmingham. Ray Thomas switched from playing harmonica to flute in order to better complement the Mellotron and thus the band's unique sound was born.

The Mellotron produces a very recognizable set of tones that sounded so modern and cutting edge in the 70s but became retro within a decade.

My
Round 29

Managed to get this listen completed before the 28's. :yay:

The 30s are still my favourite playlist but I did manage to add a few new ones to my collection

Fanny: Wonderful Feeling
Belle and Sebastian: Sister Buddha
Susanna Hoffs: This Time
Iron & Wine: Lion’s Mane
The Doors: Love Her Madly (surprised to see this one so high (Pinky: Low) in the list)

Enjoyed a few others as well, but not onces I think I'd like to hear over and over.

My tune - Lady Run, Lady Hide, is one of many popular ballads that April Wine had back in their early years. Frankly, it shouldn't be on my list but it's here due to sentimental reasons. There are many better songs that I left off. I do have a number of ballad's still to come, however. :)
Just between you and me, it’s ok if you have more ballads.
I have identified @zamboni 's alias.
Only because he said “just between you and me” rather than “just between you and I”. #petpeeve
Uh-oh. I may be an alias, too.

Huh, I didn't realize there were 40+ of us the last couple MADs. By comparison I looked at the first four playlists from Part 2, and we hovered much closer to 3hour playlists. This time around we have had 3 of 4 under 2 hours .
Personally, I feel this is close to perfect. Not a daunting commitment, just put on some tunes and let it spin.
Totally agreed, and if we want to dig in a bit deeper on some artists we can.

I'm going to keep max at 35 from now on. This is much more enjoyable.

Grinding like a MF as usual in the tournament

Shouldn't it be 31 with the option for a last 5 out?? ;)

Random thoughts from the #29s:

The strongest 3 out of 3 from new to me artists have been from Strand of Oaks, Mitski, and Belle and Sebastian. Those are the 3 I am have having the hardest time resisting listening to albums as we go. There are many other 3 for 3s from artists new and old so I've been loving a lot of music. And yes, it shows I can like a cover!!

Fly Me High is a groovy tune. This was an artist I have been meaning to dig deeper into, and I've liked the surprising journey so far.
Do Do Wap is Strong in Here has been my favorite of the songs from Curtis. Another I've been meaning to dive into so I was glad to see him show up.
Loved the 80s groove on Don't Want To Know. I was surprised to see when it was released.
Lie In Our Graves sounds like a warm blanket to me. It so reminds me of summer at college. I forgot how much I loved this song - one of my favorites on that album, and I haven't listened to it in forever.
Another unexpected journey in the first 3 songs has been The Cure. Really dug 10:15 Saturday Night, and didn't realize they released music in the 70s.

Fantastic write ups about the artists, one and all. I like to go in cold to artists I don't know, so I waited until now to read through the artist intros. I really need to read more about my artists, since I found all of the back stories so interesting, and I know so little. I have always listened to a lot of music, but never really sought out deep reading - I do that digging for movies. I have an embarrassing lack of knowledge of even big artists like Jim Morrison. (I guess I didn't see that movie either) . I need to see if any of the main artists next to tackle have an interesting looking book.

I'm loving the new love for Belle and Sebastian. It's actually surprised me.

They're a top 20 band of all time for me. And Stuart Murdoch is still kicking *** live at 55. I just saw them at the Kilby Block Party in Salt Lake City six weeks ago and, other than LCD Soundsystem, they were the best band of the 3 day festival.

If there’s a good book on the artist, I do find it enjoyable and gives some interesting insights to the tracks (or at least I find it interesting). I’ve been pulling a lot from Todd Mayfield’s Traveling Soul for this round. Read Nina Simone’s autobiography for the last one. Even found a biography of Jorge Ben for round one.

29's comments from slambovia:

Known Songs:
DMB, Cure, Doors

Favorites From Artists Not Known:
Blue October - Sexual Power Trip: All 3 songs have made my favorites so far, only artist to do so.
Fanny - Wonderful Feeling: First two were good, but this one was my favorite.
Oingo Boingo - Good for the Soul: 2 in a row that I have really enjoyed.
Brian Ferry - Don't Want to Know: Such a great vibe from start to finish.
Chvrches - Dead Air: Another 2 in a row, impressive from a movie soundtrack song
Elf/Dio - Hoochie Koochie Lady: Exactly what you would expect for a song with that title.

Round 29

This was an excellent playlist... I honestly like every song.

Known Favorites:

Lie in our Graves- DMB-
Makes me smile every time I hear it
Love Her Madly- The Doors- another classic
10:15 Saturday Night- The Cure- Haven't heard this one in a while

Unknown Favorites:

Good For the Soul-Oingo Boingo-
Know the band... but just the hits. Really enjoyed this one
Class of 2013- Mitski- never heard one song from her( that I know of) but have really liked all 3 thus far
Bug- Strand of Oaks- Damn that was a REALLY GREAT cover song.
Dead Air- Chvrches- great vibe on this one... probably my favorite new to me this round
Beggars Might Ride- Destroyer- liked this one too interesting sound
Heretics- Andrew Bird- another song thats right in my wheelhouse

Special Shoutout to Kenny Chesney... I want to give him his flowers . He is really good at what he does. He's not always my cup of tea really, but living in the Midwest my whole life, I've heard plenty of him. There will be more than a few of his i will be humming along to throughout this coundown

Ok, this convinced me. There have been 2 books that I've been wanting to get to - one for a long time favorite and one for one of my newer loves like Dino Jr. Both were in the top of my next bucket of MAD31 possibilities, so I ordered the books, and bumped them to the top of the list. It will give me something to mix in with my movie reading.

I think I understood a little, but 0 clue on razz hands.
Razz is 7 card stud, your worst 5 cards. Straights and flushes don't hurt you

87k chips now. In top 10.
Nice work. So a great razz hand would be 2,3,4,5,6?

That's good, but aces are low, so you generally want an ace. A-2-3-4-5 is the razz nuts.

#29’s

*Some Other Way
**Chronologically
Almost beat the next round.

*Blue October - Love this one. Passion, anger and humor. Something familiar about the riff underneath.

Fanny - The ingredients are still there, just waiting for the meal to be prepared. I know its coming.

The Tea Party - They definitely aren’t as conservative as their namesake musically anyway. Another unusually structured song. They do need an editor, but these songs have been real good so far

Oingo Boingo
At first I thought this was early Depeche Mode, but when the voice is let go. Not. This is my fave from them so far. A good track

Belle and Sebastian
So far 3 “modern” Belle and Sebastian tracks. All good. Just trying to match it up to the stuff I have heard before, but cant recall. So far the order is perfect. Each track is getting better. This is very nice.

*Mitski
Short and impassioned, but the vocals arent quite right imho. Still in this for the long haul.

*The Slambovian Circus of Dreams
Those Bon Jovi vocals are getting eery. This is more pleasant than exciting like the first one, but still very good.

**Moody Blues
Not familiar with this track. Can’t see it on their early albums. I stand to be corrected. Its ok. You can see the line from Go Nad to whats coming next. I assume lol.

Stone Temple Pilots
Very surprising. Quite nice. Much more easy listening than i was expecting.

Brian Setzer
I am having to triple check who i am listening to here. After the first two performances was not expecting extended Banjo solo’s. Fun, but now Im worried about whats next lol.

Curtis Mayfield
Ok. I am pretty sure I will not dislike a single Mayfield track. Why does Mayfield not get labelled a genius? Prince stole this act almost entirely. He records this its “genius”. Had to check it was recorded before Prince. Yep.

Bryan Ferry
Havent listened much to the Mamouna album. The 90s were not a time to be listening to ole smoothy. The production credits are crazy for that album. 29 people listed including Eno, in an unlikely reunion. Plus Nan Kidwell - Astrologer - wtf?

Strand of Oaks
8 minutes? ****. Im trying to play catchup here lol. If it wasnt for the change of tempo at the five and a half minute mark, I would have struggled with this one.

Dave Matthews Band
Theres the vocals i was expecting. Song is ok. Music is quite strong. Curious where we are heading 28-1

Mazzy Star
Sets a mood nicely. Quite downbeat. This is good mood music

Kenny Chesney
Three songs in and im not reaching for the skip button. I guess this is as good as Country music gets. Lots of good ingredients.

Beach Boys
Yes I’m gonna sat this all the time. Sloop John B is still better. This is a lovely track. Vocals slightly off key.

Susanna Hoffs
I really loved the #30 so expectations were too high. Everything is spot on here. Production, vocals, music. Only thing lacking is the song.

Judas Priest
Another ****ing 8 minute song lol. Well the #29 wasnt one i know. Whoops clicked the wrong youtube link. This ones only 6 minutes. I was expecting this to be one of those songs that starts slow and builds in to a full on sonic assault. Nope. Just the vocals. A good number. Solid #29.

The Cure.
Known. I love a strong bass line. Its scary that the Cure have 28 songs better than this. At least in the opinion of our humble MADer

Iron and Wine
Nicely understated and beautifully done. Impressive

*Jerry Jeff Walker
A very interesting artist so far. I hope the humorous delivery and tone is deliberate. Enjoying these tracks so far, despite it not being my style of music. Good fun.

*The Doors
One of the few tracks this round I am familiar with. I would have loved to see this band coming up a decade later with some synths thrown in.

Earth, Wind and Fire
I could probably rewrite what i wrote last time and i will. Next time something different. This is just so easy to listen to. Thats a compliment. Not easy listening music which can be an insult. This is just a pleasure to listen to.

Destroyer
There’s Bowie again as advised. Nice song, but I like the other 2 better so far.looking forward to the twists and turns coming up

*Andrew Bird
It’s clear there is a very talented dude. With an order thats not worst to best, its hard to tell where this would rank under that format. Ie i dont know if im getting the 31st ranked song or the first. I have a feeling I will hear much better.

*Steve Albini
Pretty sure I have heard this before. A work colleague loaned me a bunch of CD’s of “Indie Alternative stuff like Pixies, Breeders and numerous others in the early 90s. Great cover of a Cheap Trick song.

Dio
I feel we are heading to some interesting material after getting through the roots.

April Wine
This sounds like it could be the B-side to Listen to the Flower People by Spinal Tap. And yes Pip’s I was paying attention and reading your post.
This is a nice track and a change of pace. Every track cant be a belter.

Blue October-OZ-Any Man in America
We continue our tour through Justin’s dark days with the title track from their sixth album, about Justin Furstenfeld's divorce and custody battle over his daughter.
The artwork on the album cover is a drawing of Justin Furstenfeld drawn by Tim Palmer's daughter Bluebell, who was three years old at the time.
Thankfully I’ve never dealt with custody battles personally but I’ve seen multiple friends and soldiers deal with it, no doubt it sucks. This song puts their feelings into a catchy tune.

Justin would later say listening to this album is like watching a documentary of himself dying.
It’s one of those albums that I look at and I’m like “wow man, like seriously?” I can’t listen to that album.

‘There’s two songs that I can listen to and that’s The Feel Again and The Worry List and the rest of them just sound like this angry, angry bitter man who got his heart broken and his kid taken away and is just losing his f*cking mind.

‘It’s like watching a documentary of when you die. I can’t watch it, I just can’t! It brings me back to when I was using and when I was drinking and when I was a narcissist.’
Justin admitted to regretting writing the songs, and wished that he could take back some of the lyrics in it.

First, I'm simply dying at "**** This ****"

**** This **** is from 2002's Storytelling it and I included it for 2 reasons:
1. I've gotta believe this was a curveball for most (all?) of you given the song title and what actually transpires.
2. A playlist can always use an instrumental (so far, I think we've only had the Moody Blues' Overture)

I hope you enjoyed **** This **** :D

Dave MatthewsTau837So Damn Lucky

"So Damn Lucky" is a song by Dave Matthews, featured on his 2003 solo album Some Devil. This song showcases Matthews' talent for crafting deeply emotional and introspective lyrics, set against a rich musical backdrop.

This song explores themes of gratitude, fate, and the fleeting nature of life. The lyrics reflect a sense of amazement and appreciation for the fortunate moments and connections that life offers. The phrase "So damn lucky" encapsulates the feeling of being unexpectedly blessed, despite life's uncertainties and challenges.

The song blends elements of rock, folk, and acoustic music, creating a warm and engaging sound. The song is driven by Dave's intricate acoustic guitar work, providing a melodic and rhythmic foundation. The arrangement includes subtle layers of electric guitar, piano, and percussion, adding richness without overpowering the song's intimate feel.

I linked the studio version in the list. Here are a couple more versions:
  • Live at Radio City 2007 (Dave and Tim) - the song begins around 2:20, right after Dave says this is a song about "not to forget about counting your blessings"
  • AOL Sessions (Dave solo)

Curtis MayfieldDon QuixoteIt’s All Right, by The Impressions
This one should be higher (Binky/80s - lower), but I kept it a bit earlier for more of an introduction to The Impressions. It remains The Impressions biggest hit to this day. Where I left off on my introduction to The Impressions after “For Precious Love,” Jerry Butler had left The Impressions; Fred Cash and Curtis Mayfield had left and come back; and still had Sam Gooden and the Brooks brothers.

The Brooks brothers were still around for another hit that just missed my 31 (in retrospect, should have found some space, but this is a tight 31) in Gypsy Woman. But they did not stick around much longer, as The Impressions were still having trouble finding their footing. So, that left The Impressions at Mayfield, Gooden, and Cash, which is how they would stay until Mayfield left The Impressions. The more compact formation of The Impressions would make the vocals and harmonies a lot tighter, and allowed more of the trade-offs between Mayfield’s falsetto with Fred and Sam’s deeper voices.

It was also right after the Brooks brothers left the band that Curtis Mayfield started working with Johnny Pate on developing the Chicago Sound, whose brass added a new dimension to their music. As Todd Mayfield wrote in Traveling Soul:

Three basic elements form the Chicago Sound—my father’s guitar, [Carl] Davis’s production, and the arrangements of jazz-bassist-turned-arranger Johnny Pate… From the first session, something special happened when Johnny and the Impressions came together. Usually the group ripped through three or four songs in one day—a pace Dad kept up most of his career. But when they recorded “It’s All Right” in August 1963, the song stopped them dead. “We didn’t record anything else that day,” Fred recalled. “We just kept on playing that song over and over again, and we were just wondering if this was a hit. Then Gene Chandler said, ‘Let me tell you something—if y’all don’t want that song, give it to me. This is a hit.’” …

“It’s All Right” was Curtis’s first great party song. Shedding the mystical, lovelorn overtones that colored much of his previous work, his lyrics simply invite the listener to have a good time. A finger-snapping shuffle drives the song, punctuated by Johnny’s horn blasts. It cruises on that groove as Curtis trades the call-and-response chorus with Fred and Sam. It is deceptively simple, though. A close listen shows how tight and intricate the Impressions’ vocal arrangements had become, trading between lead and background, harmony and unison with expertly timed precision.

While this one was a party song, it also started leading Curtis Mayfield down the way of more socially conscious songs. While he did not intend it that way, many activists took to it, and it gave Mayfield some inspiration, which would come more to the front in later songs.

Biting Your Tail- Iron and Wine
from Walking Far from Home B side(2010)

May your hands be strong and willing
May you know when to speak and to listen
May you find every friend that you're missing
There's no check in the mail

May you end it bruised and purple
And know that peace is the shape of a circle
Round and round you'll go
Biting your tail

If you've ever wondered what it would sound like to take Beam's voice and lyrics and lay them over Electric-pop... well, Biting your Tail is for you. This one is hard for me to rank. I LOVE the lyrics from this one... but I'm not in love with the sound of the studio recording. This one offers genuine electronic backing and even has a rhythm that one would normally associate with more experimental music, not the stripped-down folk we are used to hearing from I&W. The Lyrics themselves sound more like a Prayer than a song.

For those who only listen to the spotify list posted you will only hear the studio version. I will link a acoustic version below ( which I prefer). Not to say that the studio version is Bad... its just different.

Ronnie James Dio #28
Artist: Roger Glover and Guests
Song: Love is All (off The Butterfly Ball and the Grasshopper’s Feast, 1974*)

(Animated Video) Roger Glover And Guests - Love Is All
(Live performance) Dio with Deep Purple - Love is All London Symphony Orchestra

Well, all you need is love and understanding
Ring the bell and let the people know
We're so happy and we're celebratin'
Come on and let your feelings show

First of all, obviously my tease from last time applies only to the animated video. Though let me set the stage a little.

This was a Roger Glover solo album. Though the “and guests” plays a prominent part, as Glover invited other people to be lead vocals on the tracks. Most people got one song, but Dio was lead on three songs, and also get partial writing credits on three songs. “Love is All” is the only one where he handles both roles.

Perhaps not surprisingly from the title, this was a concept album, a regular rock opera. The title’s borrowed from an 1802 poem by William Roscoe, with this song inspired by one mentioned in the poem called “Love’s All You Need”. Which, by the 70s, was a sentiment perhaps best captured by another band, thus the slight change in title. The animation features many animated creatures getting ready for the ball. You know, by drinking, putting on masks, and, um, performing wizardry. Props to John Halas and Joy Batchelor for their work, too.

For all that, the song's got a catchy feel to it. More pop rock or maybe hard rock than Dio's usual fare from this point on, but he makes it work. Even without the conceit of looking at some of Ronnie's pre-Rainbow work in this low spots, I think this earns its place here. Hopefully you'll agree.

Next up on the countdown, everything left is from Black Sabbath, Dio (the band) or Heaven & Hell (also the band). Though the album featured next is a bit of a different experience.

The Slambovian Circus of DreamsYambagRiders on the Storm/Billie Jean Medley

Not on Spotify Playlist

Being a newbie for these countdowns, I made the cardinal mistake of choosing some songs not available on Spotify. The Slambovians have a lot of live songs that have not officially been released, but I couldn’t leave them off my top 31. I will highlight these with a Not on Spotify Playlist intro for those that just use the playlist link so you don’t miss them.

The Slambovians are always mixing up their live shows and songs, of which my list has many examples. One thing they love to do is seamlessly blend cover songs both with and without their original work. For instance they have done a 15:00 medley that mashes up Just Like Me/Wipe Out/Walk Don't Run/Land of a Thousand Dances/White Wedding/Let's Dance/Lovesong/China Girl/Werewolves of London. Here is one of my favorites that I just got to hear live at the annual New Years Eve Eve Show in Philadelphia which blends fellow MAD artist The Door's Riders on the Storm with Michael Jackson's Billie Jean along with a special surprise in the middle.

28: Rockin' (All Nite Long)
Album: Rock and Roll Survivors (1974)
Writer: Patti Quatro
Lead vocals: Patti Quatro

Patti Quatro (sister of Suzi) joined Fanny in late 1973 after June Millington left and immediately became a major contributor, penning four songs, more than any other member, for their final album Rock and Roll Survivors. While nowhere near as talented a guitarist as June, she was capable of playing monster riffs, and that was best displayed on Rockin' (All Nite Long), one of the heaviest songs Fanny ever recorded. The lyrics are entirely cliches, but who cares when the track is this slamming -- check out the bitchin' bass fills by Jean Millington starting at 1:43 -- and the harmonies take you to rock and roll heaven. I said earlier that this album is a KISS record made by women, and this is one of the tracks that forms my case.

If this song was ever played live, there is no surviving evidence of it. That's a damn shame.

At #27, we have the opposite situation, a ballad that was played live.
