Today is Steve Albini's 62nd birthday. There's a push from his wife, in conjunction with his birthday and the event this weekend, to use the hashtag #thankyoustevealbini for remembrances today and during the weekend's festivities. So there are a ton of posts on your favorite social media sites today, including at least a couple from OH.

I was just scrolling through some of the Facebook ones and saw one from James McCartney. I didn't realize Steve had recorded an album for him several years ago. :)
What is the event this weekend? Is it a celebration of life?

Yes, it's a four-day private gathering with performances, remembrances and poker. And food, it appears a lot of food.

I kmow tim is a popular punching bag, but looking at that 1978 list so far, im at the head of the queue lol.
That Tom Waits number is awful. He is picking songs from the wrong year etc.
The old JML would be going cataclysmic. The new and improved version is gonna have to find strength from somewhere

Also, there was a MAD artist connection with David Roback and Susanna Hoffs both part of the Paisley Underground and members of the group Rainy Day (I won't spotlight in case Zegras included in his list).

The #24s were definitely a breath of fresh air after a particularly draining day, both mentally and physically. Lots to love per usual. I’m going to keep this bit short(er) this time, and get on with it..

Selected (and Shuffled) #24s
Fitz and the Dizzyspells - Andrew Bird
Knock on My Door - Fanny
The Caterpillar - The Cure
English Music - Destroyer
I’ve Been Let Down - Mazzy Star
Don’t Drink the Water - DMB
Star - Mitski
Forever - Chvrches
The Right Stuff - Bryan Ferry.
Creep - Stone Temple Pilots
Just Not Today - Kenny Chesney

Shuffle Adventures:
Blue October and the Tea Party both impressed me back-to-back. Maybe it was my mood, but the latter sounded like a Soundgarden song from somewhere around the time of the “Louder Than Love” album.

Going forward, I think that both bands have officially reached the territory of “if I don’t mention them, assume I still really liked it” that several artists fit into from the start. A few other completely new bands aren’t far away.

Too funny, @Mt. Man - my note from this morning's listen was that it sounded like Louder than Love and Superunknown had a baby. I just chalked it up again to recency bias since I have listening to a book about Soundgarden and listening to their albums and making a playlist.

15 "24" Thoughts. I'll let Fitz and Dizzyspells lead it off...

-👏👏👏👏
- "I've Been Let Down" is a nice strumming song. Vocals are great, and I like the harmonica appearance.
- "English Music" is good. I've been trying to figure out who Bejar's voice reminds me of sometimes, and I think it is one of the Felice Brothers. I like the use of the piano in this song.
- "The Soft Parade" is one of the weirdest songs by The Doors. It has lots of parts to it. I can't decide which part of the song is "the best part of the trip."
- Speaking of weird, "The Caterpillar" has some interesting sounds going on in it. 🐛
- I dig the instrumentation in "Don't Drink the Water."
- I like the acoustic and rocking mix in "Coming Home."
- The Rx cover of "Just Got Paid" is :moneybag:. One of my favorite songs to hear on a Friday.
- "Please Let Me Wonder" is warm and pleasant sounding.
- JP means business in "The Sentinel." 🎸
- "Dead or Alive" is energized!
- I like that buzzing guitar in "Knock On My Door." I like that piano, too.
- "Creep" reminds me of the 90s.
- "Holly Would" makes me wonder why April Wine wasn't played more in the USA.
- "Weary Memory" is relaxing. In the lyrics where he sings, "seeeee," it sounds like "sleeep."

The DoorsjwbThe Soft Parade

The title track to the Doors most polarizing album is one of their most polarizing songs. The Soft Parade album took people by surprise by adding horns and strings, and it's kind of a mess lyrically as well. And this is evident in this song, which is all over the place and kind of three songs in one, with the long ending being a mashup of voices and phrases. It does capture a band in chaos - Morrison was starting to drink heavily and contemplating leaving the band to pursue film and poetry, the producer (Paul Rothchild) was strung out on coke and becoming a taskmaster - nobody had a good time making the album or this song.

I suspect for many people this is the least favorite Doors song in my list. It's near the middle for me - the third section is pretty cool if you're in the right state of mind.

Big fan of it - it's really a whirlwind of different styles that somehow just works. My favorite part is the early 1970s game-show sounding part at the 1:30 mark. I can envision Gene Rayburn strolling out with his skinny microphone to that part.

24. Rx -- Just Got Paid

Steve has said a million times that ZZ Top is one of his favorite bands and until you hear this, you'd have no idea how their swaggering Texas badassery could possibly fit in with the brutal, clanging ugliness of the worst-named band in the world. What I like about this version is that it seems like they are actually having fun playing rock music, rather than the dour, miserable experience this band usually engenders.

Stick around for the next song and see how ZZ Top REALLY plays a role in Shellac.

So we are about 25% through and I just want to make a shout out to all of you.

Every playlist has been very enjoyable. The writeups have been great. Every song link sent to me has posted perfectly.

And special thanks to KP. He's always on time with the Playlists and I really appreciate that he takes this part of it on.

Sorry I don't have a lot of beefy writeups for The Tea Party. Being Canadian and not really having any success here, there is not a lot of info out there that I haven't already shared. They are very much just "a band that I discovered and liked" in college, and it doesn't go much deeper than that. I feel like they were talented enough to get some exposure here, but a bad early label of theirs and some odd decisions on the band's part kept them in Canada and Australia mostly.

I'll have more to say around the top 10 because that's when we get to the real bangers.

STP #23 - Too Cool Queenie
Album - Shangri-La Dee Da (2001)

This is the first song on my list from the Shangri-La album (and definitely won’t be the last). It’s definitely not as deep and iconic as their first three albums, and didn’t have nearly the popularity, but I like quite a few songs from this offering - largely driven by the particular time in my life it came out and some strong connections to songs I’ll call out further on my countdown.

Too Cool Queenie is just a fun, cool, quirky song that I’ve always liked and grows on you with more listens. Scott had to leave his mark on the lyrics though.

There was this boy
He played in a rock-n-roll band
And he wasn't half bad at saving the world (saving the world)
She said he could do no right
So he took his life
His story is true

They’ve been my favorite surprise so far. I’ve been enjoying your list a lot.

Same. One of the “never heard of this band” that I’ve really enjoyed.

Andy Scott’s Sweet

#23 - Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again (Cover of a song by the Angels)

Producer - Andy Scott
Writer - John Brewster, Rick Brewster, Doc Neeson
Chart Positions - Did Not Chart
Album - A (Or The Answer)
Year - 1992
Lead Vocal - Mal McNulty
Steve Priest Vocal - Not in band

Notes - Australia was one of the more regular places Sweet toured, especially once Andy Scott had control of the band post 1981. With the time spent in the country certain local songs would become very familiar, such is the case with this song. The Angels, a band that influenced Cheap Trick, Guns N Roses and Pearl Jam, were fed into the famed production line of George Young and Harry Vanda. Vanda and Young had recent success with AC/DC. Their first major release was this song. It only reached #58, but as the band rose in success so did the aura of this song. It was a fan favorite and given the eloquence of Australians, when the title was sung the fans added "No way, get ****ed, **** off". Poetry. This song is now an Australian Classic and the bands most well known song. Despite 18 top 50 hits and a string of successful albums. A live version of this song reached #11 on the singles chart.

Andy Scott’s Sweet had a bash in an attempt to curry favor with Australian audiences and hope the international audiences would warm to the song.

Next Up - A song first recorded by Andy Scott as a solo project but after some thugs tap danced all over Brian Connollys throat, extra material was required. The next 3 songs will showcase the non Vocalist contributions to the band.

Belle and Sebastiankupcho1Step Into My Office, Baby
#23, Step Into My Office, Baby is the first selection* from Dear Catastrophe Waitress (2003).
Not much to say about the song, which seems to be about sexual harassment. I do like the change of pace throughout.
Hope you enjoy it.

She gave me some dictation
But my strength is in administration
I took down all she said
I even took down her little red dress

* You've heard this before, and you'll hear it again a few more times. I didn't set out to do this, but there are no album repeats to date (9 so far and counting), it just worked out that way.

At the end of this, I think I'd like an album recommendation for Mr Bird. And the whistling just kicked in. Yes!
If you're interested, my top 31 includes seven songs from The Mysterious Production of Eggs (five remain to be revealed), and another seven from Armchair Apocrypha (five remain), but I suspect that the best recommendation would be My Finest Work Yet, which includes three highly ranked songs on my list, so don't peak yet.

23. Voices in the Sky (In Search of the Lost Chord, 1968)

Released as a single, it reached #27 on the UK charts but failed to chart in the U.S.

I don't have much to say about this song; I liked it when I was exploring their catalog in college and it's not a bad song; I just don't like admitting to enjoying such an 'easy listening' tune.

Up next: new album, same old hippies.

Today's selection is really excellent. Two thumbs up.

Strand of Oaks #23 - "Wait For Love" (2015)

"Wait For Love" is the first of five songs from the fourth album HEAL. It's the record that made me a fan and remains my favorite Strand album to this day. I could have picked another couple songs from this album but as it is, I've already included half of it.

This song is a proper album closer. I guess it's a love song but it's a typically complicated one. The song builds from a simple three chord pattern and a verse reminiscent of "Sunday Bloody Sunday" to Tim's falsetto howling over synths and drums before safely touching down where it started.

I wasn't in love I was here
I was an abomination
And there was a call, there was a high, there was a heaven dawned in roses
I'm giving up getting over you
