Middle Aged Dummies - Artist - Round 3 - #1's have been posted! (2 Viewers)

Known and liked songs from #21 include Moody Blues, STP, DMB, Chesney (one of his best, great vocal melody), Beach Boys, Doors and EWF.

Thoughts on some of the others:

More '90s-style goodness from the Tea Party, though technically this track is from the early '00s. Wiki describes it as being from a "back to basics" album.

Legal Man sounds like something from the soundtrack of a '60s movie or TV show that's trying to capture the attention of "the young people".

If Maryanne Faithfull debuted in the 2010s instead of the 1960s, her material may have sounded like First Love/Late Spring.

Joziah from Slambovia's vocal on Snow reminds me of Bowie.

Brian Setzer's cover of The House Is Rockin' is supercharged.

I really like the bass and synths on The Main Thing. Have to look up who played those parts because Roxy had session players in those slots by the time of Avalon. Oh, looks like Ferry played the synths himself and the track used two bassists, Alan Spenner and Neil Jason.

The Main Thing segues into Ananda quite fluidly thanks to the synths on the latter. I dunno if I could take an entire Strand album that sounds like Ananda, but this would be a strong song in any arrangement.

Some Heads Are Gonna Roll offers many of the elements that make Judas Priest a top-tier metal band, though I wish the '80s drum production had been toned down.

Prayers for Rain is intense and ambitious.

Hairy *** Hillbillies is fun and rambling.

I like how The Bad Arts progresses -- it's another Destroyer song that reminds me of Modest Mouse.

Painwise has dentist-drill guitar. This is better than dentist-drill vocals.

Master of Insanity is a masterful example of dawn-of-the-90s metal.

April Wine's cover of 21st Century Schizoid Man -- the original of which made my list in the British Isles MAD countdown -- is surprisingly faithful at first, but the instrumental section with three guitars trading solos is quite different from the guitar-and-sax passages in the original. It didn't sound like Myles Goodwin singing, so I found a live video to confirm it's Brian Greenway on vocals.

KP, any reason why we have a STP "bonus track" at the end of this playlist?

Thanks for that. Once again I was too lazy to look it up. :). I thought the same about it not sounding like Myles. I have another Brian Greenway lead vocal coming up later. I'm not sure how many songs he sang, it's not many. I don't usually love extended solos, but this one is an exception. I would imagine the drummer had lots of fun, too.

Looks like Greenway usually sang one or two songs per album after he joined in 1978.

I never thought the drums were over the top, but listening again, I can see it. Quite a banger tune though - those riffs are great.
Yeah, it's pretty obvious, especially when juxtaposed with how, say, British Steel sounds.

At least they weren't using drum machines like they did on their 1988 album.

Sort of the Ace Frehley of the band, but more talented and better looking.

21s

Made it through the 21 list just in time for the 20s to come out later.
(of course I still have to back up and play the 24s. lol )

Another good run for me with the 21s. of the 3 recent MAD lists I have to say this is my favorite. I have added as many songs to my favourites after 11 songs as I did in 31 in the others, I think.
Good stuff!

Legal Man - I have enjoyed most of Belle and Sebastian list. Sadly, had never heard of them prior to this.
First Love/Late Spring - Mitski is another new artist for me and I have enjoyed many of these tunes.
Never Comes the Day - Beautiful Moody Blues song.
The House is Rockin'. - Yes, it certainly is!
The Main Thing - Not sure I've had a shout out for Roxy but this is a good one!
Ananda - STrand of Oaks, Haunting sound
You & Me - Not much a DMB fan but this would be one of of top 3 almost certainly
Somewhere With You - Another Kenny Chesney song I enjoyed.
On Your Wings. iron and Wine has impressed and this is another artist I had not previously heard of
September - Who doesn't love this one?

My selection - 21st Century Schizoid Man. Love this tune. Was ranked a bit higher but I wanted to be one of the cool kids and line the title up with it's position. Love the guitars playing off each other and, of course, the great drumming by Mr. Mercer. I remember this song the most when I saw them live back in the day. Lights off and just spotlights on Mercer, who was bald, as he went nuts on the drums.

Of all my list I thought this would have the most favorable response. Not sure it hit as well as I expected. #20 is another ballad.

Keeping the thread on page one with some music nerd news. The prolific critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine, best known for his reviews on Allmusic was laid off today after 32 years in the business. He was employed by tech holding company Xperi who is apparently a content provider as well as the current owner of the Tivo brand name.

I've read hundreds, perhaps thousands of his reviews over the year so I've probably absorbed some of his tastes. I guess it's good that critic racket has been diminished by the ability to listen to any music but I still enjoy an insightful review. Erlewine's work will continue to be prime content for future AI bots.

20. Higher and Higher (To Our Children's Childrens' Children, 1969)

The Moodies' next album, To Our Children's Children's Children, is the first release on the band's new label, Threshold Records. The band's producer, Tony Clarke, who if you'll remember as the man responsible for turning their fortunes around, was also an astrophile (to the point where he had various telescopes mounted on a dome on top of his house) and chose as this album's theme the space race, space travel in general and the moon landing in particular, which occurred while they were recording the album. Despite not containing any commercial hits, this is my favorite Moody Blues album.

Higher and Higher is the first track and the band's auditory approximation of a Saturn V rocket launch; to get the desired sound (NASA had sent them a recording of an actual Saturn V rocket launch, but it didn't translate well in audio), multiple layers of sounds were used, including amplifiers turned all the way up with no instruments attached, the internal motors of their synthesizers with microphones connected to them, and muffled drums providing the general rumble leading into the building of the instruments. Keyboardist Mike Pinder provides the narration, and if you notice a change in his voice at the line 'butterfly sneezes', it's because he had been holding his nose pinched shut until saying those words.

Up next: our journey through space continues.

STP #20 - Lady Picture Show
Album - Tiny Music. . . (1996)

This is a lovely song that per Scott Weiland is "about the horrific gang rape of a dancer who winds up falling in love but can't let go of the pain."

This was on the pilot episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Lady picture show,
she hides behind the bedroom door
Lady picture girl,
I think them boys don't like your show
Lady picture show them boys are gone,
should just say no

Your wedding presents' not so
daisy picture perfect anymore
🌼
Lady funny face it's locked and bagged
it's just outside the door

Don't know nothin' anymore

Curtis MayfieldDon QuixoteI’m So Proud, by The Impressions

Prettier than all the world
And I'm so proud (I'm so proud)
I'm so proud of you

Dipping back again to an early song by The Impressions with a beautiful, slow dance ballad. This one was covered by a lot of artists. Also an influence to Bob Marley and the Wailers (as told in Traveling Soul):

At [the time of I’m So Proud’s release], three kids in Jamaica formed a loose little group called the Wailers, and they based their sound and style on the Impressions. The trio of Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, and Bunny Wailer even dressed like the Impressions. As Bunny recalled, “We were fascinated by the way they did this song, ‘I’m So Proud.’ Out of that song came [the Wailers’] ‘It Hurts to Be Alone.’” When the Impressions toured Jamaica that year, the young Wailers sat in the first row of the Carib Theatre.

While it may have been first, they would go on to cover a number of songs by The Impressions (including a pretty famous partial cover).

If “I’m So Proud” has a tinge of familiarity, like you have heard of it recently, but can’t quite place where, it is currently in a Toyota Camry commercial.

Up next: Sticking with The Impressions, but a later song by them.

The one @New Binky the Doormat was waiting for — Todd Rundgren covered this as part of a soul medley on his otherwise very weird album A Wizard, A True Star. I believe this is the album Todd was so anxious to make that he mixed Fanny’s Mothers Pride album quickly without input from the band so he could start sessions for his own work.

20. You've Got a Home
Album: Fanny Hill (1972)
Writer: June Millington
Lead vocals: June Millington

This minimally arranged song -- June Millington on acoustic and electric slide guitars and lead vocals, Jean Millington on bass and harmony vocals, and no one else -- is one of Fanny's most compelling numbers and in my mind their most emotional.

Written from the perspective of a single mom, the lyrics describe the struggle the protagonist and her son undergo to survive on their own, and how much she loves him and is determined to protect him. If you are a parent, it is overwhelmingly powerful.

It's time for all good little boys to go to sleep
Let's say our prayer, beg the Lord my soul to keep
Run to the bedroom and I'll tuck you into bed
Read you a story then I'll kiss your sleepy head

Someday I'll have to tell you
The reason we live alone
You may not have a father but you've got a home

And when you wake, I'll build a fire to keep you warm
Stay home from school, thank God we're sheltered from the storm
Someday we'll have a little cottage by the sea
And watch the sunrise from the seashore you and me

Someday I'll have to tell you
Why I've chosen to live alone
You may not have a father but you've got a home

Come to the window, hold your breath and take a peek
Enjoy the silence, it's been snowing for a week
But in the house I'm giving love to keep you warm
I didn't plan it but I'm glad that you were born

I find it so amazing
How quickly you have grown
You may not have a father but you've got a home

As far as I know, June Millington never had any children of her own, so this song shows off her skill at writing from others' perspectives. Given the cultural shifts that were happening in the late '60s and early '70s, I suspect she knew a few women in this position, including former Svelts and future Fanny drummer Brie Berry/Brandt/Howard, who I believe was a single mom in between marriages when this song was written.

The song's simple arrangement lets the lyrics take center stage, but the bursts of slide guitar accentuate the emotions involved.

There is no surviving evidence that this song was performed live. It was one of only two songs from Fanny Hill not in the setlist of the Cleveland 1972 show that was officially released as Fanny: Live in 1972. (The other is Sound and the Fury, which was in my Last 5 Out.)

At #19, we get back to a full-band arrangement that is identified on its genius.com lyrics page as "a moderate rocker."

Sweet

#20 - Call Me

Producer - Sweet
Writer - Andy Scott
Chart Positions - #29 in Germany
Album - Cut Above the Rest
Year - 1979
Lead Vocal - Steve Priest
Steve Priest Vocal - Lead
Notes - Brian Connolly left/was booted. The decision was made to promote bassist Steve Priest to lead vocal. He had sung the previous single California Nights, which was the follow up to Love is Like Oxygen. This was the song chosen to kick off Sweet Mk 4. We hope you like our new direction. The public voted a big no to this. We will see one subsequent song soon. This one has a great chorus, but the verses are awful and do nothing to help promote Priest as the lead. Production is MOR garbage. It was the last original Sweet song to chart anywhere. #29 in Germany only. Germany had always been their most successful market with 8 #1 singles and 6 more making the top 5.

Next Up - Back to our traditional run down with a song that is another belter. Brian Connolly sings the **** out of this one. An album track only.

20's PLAYLIST

The Slambovian Circus of DreamsYambagMoondog House
As referenced by Joziah with his intro to the previous song, the Slambovians had the honor of being the first American band to play in mainland China. Here is the story:

“It’s a crazy story. We had played in Japan on a bill with other bands, in this punk club in Japan, the Monster Club or something like that. This Japanese band who had seen us play got into China and people loved them, and even the government loved them. And [an official] said to them, “Do you know another band like you?” And they had just seen us play in this punk club in Japan, and told them about us.”

“The guy got buzzed about the idea, and then found out we were an American band, but he still pursued us. This guy took a chance, and all of a sudden we were going to China and playing in Shanghai before it really opened to the West. There was only one hotel in Shanghai when we played there. And we played several shows around the city for a few weeks. They wrote such positive things in the press about us, and they even printed the first English word ever in the People's Daily newspaper. The first English word ever.”

“We took a cameraman with us and filmed it, so you can see that we had armed soldiers at our show, who wound up becoming our friends instead of shooting us for what we did on stage!”

Chvrches

#20 - I’m With You (A cover of an Avril Lavigne song)

Producer - Chvrches
Writer - Avril Lavigne Lauren Christy Scott Spock Graham Edwards
Album - Released as part of their Apple Music Home Session, released on September 24, 2021
Year - 2021
Notes - We only have one cover left after this as we start getting serious. This is a beautiful rendition of the early Avril Lavigne song. Sung tenderly by Lauren, i guess its not that different from the original. It does offer something slightly different, but whatever the case it is really well done

Next Up - The most recent new song from the band. Seems to be a one off single as the band are taking a “break” while Lauren tries solo stuff.

Belle and Sebastiankupcho1The Party Line
#20, The Party Line, is from Girls in Peacetime Want to Dance (2015).
From Pitchfork:
On Belle and Sebastian's first album in five years, the band has introduced a new wrinkle, writing a record filled with synthesizers and dance grooves to coax their once notoriously-staid live crowds to cut a rug.

Apparently Belle and Sebastian have a storied history with dance; from Songfacts:
Belle and Sebastian penned this song about Club Divine, a long-running dance night at Glasgow Art School at which the band were all regulars. Guitarist Bobby Kildea told Drowned in Sound: "The building has since been completely remodeled and renovated, the 'Black and White Tiles' having been replaced with grey lino, which may not have the same ring to it, but will nonetheless provide a suitable surface upon which future generations can commit their own crimes."

Standing on the black and white tiles
Don't dance on the lights 'cause the bears eat the pretty ones
We are like the islands divided

Since it seemed to work I'm going to do 5 more randoms from the 20s (obviously if mine comes up, it's a skip; same with the 5 artists I've already done. I'd like to hit everyone's artist at least once.)

Oh hell yeah, we're off to a great start. I have been a Cure fan since I heard ... well, I won't spotlight, but suffice to say it was 1979. This is such a driving tune. And the chorus; chef's kiss
Further we go
And older we grow
The more we know
The less we show

Mazzy Starlandrys hatFlying Low

Bluesy is the first thing that comes to mind with Flying Low. I also love the guitar. And how it turned into a jazzy jam session.
I'm skin deep on Mazzy Star. Not sure why, as everything I've heard is good to great. It's probably cuz most of it falls in my musical fallow period (aka, the 90s).

Dave MatthewsTau837Minarets

Another one (primarily, at least to me) from the 90s. I know a little from DMB, but not much of Dave on his own(ish).
Now don't get upset, but I got an Adam Sandler vibe on this one with some of the vocal contortions going on. Nowhere near as over the top as Sandler, but I could almost visualize the expressions he's making as he's singing. Still and all, a pretty good tune.

Bryan Ferry/Roxy MusicBinkytheDoormatTake A Chance With Me

Back to one I'm much more familiar with (artist, that is) although I don't believe I've ever heard Take A Chance With Me. Checks album release date: 1982. That's odd, I should know this one. I guess I didn't go too deep on Avalon (1982). Certainly know the big hits. Seems like this was a solid album front to back. Nice

Jerry Jeff WalkersimeyI Feel Like Hank Williams Tonight

I've been surprised at how often Jerry Jeff Walker has resonated with me. Unfortunately, this was not one of those times.
I mean it's ok, but it makes me wonder if there's some constitutional by-law in the country music community that you have to do at least one song about or related to Hank Williams.
I do like me some steel guitar though. 🎸

(For the record, I didn't need to skip to avoid duplicates or my own artist.)

I Feel Like Hank Williams Tonight

This song was written by Chris Wall. Jerry Jeff was the first to record and release it, and it is on his 1989 album Live at Gruene Hall. Jerry Jeff was well known for champion songs of his friends, especially when they were unknown at the time. I'll elaborate more on that in a few days. His arrangement of this song is quite different than Wall's. JJ has always been able to sell a song with that weary baritone voice, whether it be a good time stomper or a slow ballad.

I like the lyrics in the song, although JJW didn't write this one. I tell ya what...I dedicate the next Jerry Jeff song to you. It is one he wrote. Wait for it, and don't be peeking at KP's Spotify page...

Ronnie James Dio #20
Artist: Heaven & Hell
Song: Atom and Evil
(off The Devil You Know, 2009)

(Youtube version) Atom and Evil

One more promise
We can tame the sun
And then we'll shine forever

So then. “Heaven & Hell” is the band. “Heaven and Hell” is the song that may appear later. [sarcasm] No chance of confusion there, right? [/sarcasm] As mentioned in the last preview, this is the Dio-era Black Sabbath crew without that name. I repeat that because this album only shows up here in the Top 31. There’s another in the Last 5 Five Out, and a couple others that were reasonably close.

Anyway, this song carries much of what you’d expect (and/or what you’ve seen) from these four. A loud, catchy guitar intro to help set the scene. Dio’s vocals starting soft and mellow (for heavy metal) before changing tone and timbre throughout. Complete with a break in the lyrics for the other three to really shine. It all comes together very well. Even though listening to this album often leaves me with a bittersweet feeling.

Next up on the countdown, surely how Dio actually died, from a comment earlier in this thread.

20.
Flightless Bird, American Mouth- Iron and Wine
from The Shepard's Dog (2007)

“Have I found you?
Flightless bird, jealous, weeping
Or lost you?
American mouth
Big pill looming”

You might have heard this one if you have teenage girls who love the Twilight movies as it is featured in the 1st movie. although it is cast as a love song (partly thanks to twilight) its actually about American consumerism and Beam's take on loss of innocence/an idealized America.

The lyrical content was inspired by how Beam was feeling at the time about his home country. In an interview with The Independent while he was still making the album, the musician said: “It’s not a political propaganda record, but it’s definitely inspired by political confusion.” “I love America,” Beam said. “It’s fine to, like, love America and criticize it at the same time. We usually criticize the things we love the most.”

Curious to see whether most of you prefer the live version from argue with a 🌴 or the album.

Spotify freezes my desktop computer all the time, but that computer is old. It doesn't do it if I listen to a playlist, but if I hit an individual link it usually does. I don't think it has done that on my laptop.

Strand of Oaks #20 - "Satellite Moon" (2012)

The second and final song from the third record Dark Shores, a concept album sung from the perspective of a lonely man stranded on the moon dwelling on the past and loves lost. Unsurprisingly, it's kind of a downbeat work but it lacks the musical weirdness that the concept deserves. Tim was paired with big time indie producer John Vanderslice for this one. I'm not pointing fingers but some of Tim's usual idiosyncrasies are absent. It's not uncommon for Strand of Oaks songs to sound a bit like Neil Young, especially in the first half of his career but I think Dark Shores is the Neilest record Tim ever made.

"Satellite Moon" is a mid-tempo rocker with organ fills and a shuffling beat that reminds me of CCR in a way. There's no fat on the song; it comes and goes in under 2:30.

Sunlight coming and I rake it up
On the winds of the satellite moon
I make gold then I mess it up
On the winds of the satellite moon
I never said it would be this easy
You were wasting your light out on me
I never said anything

Dave MatthewsTau837Minarets

"Minarets" is a song featured on the 1993 DMB independent release, "Remember Two Things." The song showcases the band's eclectic musical style, blending elements of rock, jazz, world music, and folk.

The lyrics are known for their abstract and contemplative nature. They often evoke imagery related to spirituality, existential musings, and reflections on human existence. The enigmatic nature of the lyrics invites listeners to reflect and find personal meaning in the song, adding depth to the listening experience. The title "Minarets" refers to the towers typically found on mosques, used for the call to prayer, which suggests themes of spiritual seeking or awareness.

The song features a blend of rock, jazz, and world music influences, creating a distinctive sound that sets it apart from many other songs in the DMB catalog. The use of Middle Eastern-inspired scales and rhythms gives "Minarets" a unique and atmospheric quality, contributing to its mystique and appeal. It showcases the band's ability to craft intricate musical arrangements; the song includes varying dynamics, time signatures, and instrumental layers, which highlight the technical skills of the band members and create a rich, textured listening experience.

I linked the version from Live at Luther College 1996 (Dave and Tim) in the playlist. Here is the version off Remember Two Things.

Blue October-OZ-Amnesia - Live from Argue with a tree
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iXReLT4I7Ew

From their second album, consent to treatment, released in 2000. I prefer the live version from argue with a tree (one of my all time favorite albums, although it’s behind their Live from Manchester on my list; amnesia isn’t on that album).
The version on AWT includes the poem “Retarded Disfigured Clown", the first track from consent to treatment.

Here, Justin deals with **** he’d rather forget.

I wish I could go to sleep and wake up with amnesia
And try to forget the things that I've done
I wish I knew how to keep the promises I made you
But life I guess it goes on
Yeah I know it goes on
You see I've learned it goes on
But then I'll hang us on the wall
And I'll crawl in the open side
And I'm blind to it all
So why don't you
Crawl in my open side and become blind to it all
You know I think it's time to pray
For the contortion, my abortion
That I somehow shoved away
I think it's right for me (yeah I think it's right for me)
When I was young I was stung
And somehow lost God's faith

This is the last of the “angsty” songs, things are about to get melancholy, then more positive with some straight up 🧀

This was probably everyone's first listen of Kenny Chesney - Wherever You Are Tonight. Whether you came into this thing familiar with his work or not, what you listened to was probably unexpected. This is the closer on his most recent album, Born. I came to the conclusion by about track 10 this was cover-to-cover the best work of his career and all this did was solidify it. The piano, it's perfect. The vocals, couldn't have been better overlaid. The percussion, while subtle, kicks in just right - then holds. The guitar bridge, even better, and melds perfectly with that final chorus. Until it all slowly drifts away, poetically, wherever you are tonight.

We’re flesh and bone in beams of light
A body breaks, a soul takes flight
And faith is left to heal what tears can’t touch
You’re not gone, just out of sight
You’re here with me, wherever you are tonight

When I stop what I'm doing and actually listen, I have yet to finish this cut dry eyed. Including just now writing this up. Hope you all enjoyed this as much as I.

Lady picture girl,
