15. Shellac --WSOD

WSOD stands for World Series of D*cksucking. I first heard the phrase at the World Series of Poker when one particular friend of ours would drop everything to ingratiate himself with someone more famous. Like, the guy was talking to Steve, Andy, and I, then bailed the instant Daniel Negreanu showed up. To which Andy said "I guess he's here for WSOD." This was not unlike the actions of some folks at Steve's memorial -- why commiserate with nobodies like Krista and I when Fugazi is right over there?

Anyway, Andy's old band Hungry Man had a song titled "World Series of D*cksucking" but eventually changed it to something else. Then Andy quit Hungry Man and the band broke up. Hungry Man was fun because a.) They were really good, and b.) Everybody in the band seemed to hate each other and insulted one another openly on stage.

14. Big Black -- L Dopa

It's about the horror of African sleeping sickness, a disease caused by a parasite carried by tsetse flies that eventually causes insane neurological disorders like hallucinations, sleep inversion, coma, paralysis and all kinds of misery. It has been treated with L Dopa. You know. A fun one.

Dave MatthewsTau837Pig

"Pig" is a song featured on the 1998 DMB album "Before These Crowded Streets." The song is known for its upbeat tempo, intricate instrumentation, and introspective lyrics that explore themes of life, gratitude, and the importance of living in the moment.

The lyrics encourage listeners to appreciate life and make the most of their time. The song conveys a message of seizing the day and not taking life for granted. The chorus, "Don't burn the day away," is a reminder to live fully and appreciate the present moment. The song also touches on the fleeting nature of life, urging people to find joy and meaning in their everyday experiences. It suggests that life is precious and should be embraced with positivity and gratitude, even in the face of challenges.

During live performances, Dave often introduces "Pig" with brief comments that echo the song's themes. He might remind the audience to appreciate the present moment or reflect on the fleeting nature of life. These introductions often reinforce the song's message of gratitude and living with purpose.

Musically, the song features the band's signature blend of rock, jazz, and folk influences. The song starts with a lively, upbeat rhythm, driven by Dave Matthews' acoustic guitar and the band's dynamic instrumentation. The violin, saxophone, and drums all play prominent roles, creating a rich, layered sound that complements the song's lyrical themes.

The title "Pig" might seem unusual, and while Dave hasn't given a definitive explanation, it's generally understood to be a metaphorical reference. It could be seen as a nod to the idea of indulgence or excess, prompting listeners to consider how they are "feeding" their lives and whether they are making the most of their time.

Overall, "Pig" is a song that resonates with those who appreciate its uplifting message and complex musical arrangement. It's a track that captures the essence of the Dave Matthews Band's style—thoughtful lyrics combined with innovative and vibrant music.

I linked the studio version in the playlist. Here is a good live version: Live at Fenway Park 2006

April Wine - I Like To Rock. I suspect most of you have heard this one before . Always loved the intro to this one. Great rock guitar song. . Best part of the video, if you watch it, is the table hockey game they re playing during the outtro while the music pays homage to Satisfaction . I played that for hours on end. Leafs vs Habs.
Definitely a banger. The end overlays “Day Tripper” and “Satisfaction” together - great stuff.

As for the video, as you likely know, it was filmed at the now-defunct Le Studio in rural Quebec - same studio where they, Rush and many other bands recorded albums in the ‘70s/‘80s. Several of Rush’s videos off Moving Pictures (Tom Sawyer, Limelight, Vital Signs) that got a lot of airplay on MTV were filmed there as well. Also like the end part of the video where Brian Geeenway is riding a too-small bike like Elvira Gulch in the Wizard of @-OZ-

Wow, a cheesy 80s movie I haven't gotten to yet? This gem is on the Bachelor Party OST. I almost didn't get back to this one. My first time through I had listened to the title track by them and thought it was a bit meh along with another one I tried. However, after encountering another b-side I loved after going through their live stuff (we will be hearing this one soon), I made sure I got to all I could find on Spotify. Another rockin' song with an infectious beat. It won't be the last time time we are in 80s movies. Hell, it's not the last time we are in this same movie.

Where'd the time go? We are already rounding into the top 10s! Mine will kick off with a song from a bad 80s sequel, also not the last time we will have a song from a bad 80s sequel.

I saw them twice, and each time they broke up immediately after. Their record, Eater, is really good

Fun Fact: Krista worked at the same firm as their singer more than 20 years ago!

They are on Spotify! They have 3 monthly listeners! I have the Eater record. It’s good if you like stuff like Tar or Joan of Arc.

Correct. Not streaming, and our library system didn't have it either.

ETA: I have not seen the movie Oingo Boingo is in, either.

13. Shellac -- Dude Incredible

Probably the best non-Rufus Thomas song about monkeys. Once in Myanmar I was beset by a group of monkeys while Krista and our guide climbed up an enormous flight of stairs to look at a giant gold Buddha. I stayed at the bottom of the hill and wrote these alternate lyrics, which Steve loved.

Oh my brothers
and oh my other comrades
lets leave this place directly
go where German tourists congregate
perhaps they'll give us candy
and on the way, we'll poop on Buddha

I can't remember if it was on this trip or another SE Asian trip that I bought Steve a bunch of civet coffee. I was always buying Steve stuff when we went on vacation. Everybody was. We talked about it at the memorial. Steve was pretty easy to please.

12. Shellac -- This Is a Picture

I don't know if this is the best Shellac song, but it may be my favorite. Just a pure expression, musically speaking, of their ethos as a "minimalist rock band". Every element is perfect, precise, and powerful. The guitar is simultaneously filthy and angelic--nobody ever made a guitar sound like that and nobody ever will. The lyrics are rude, vaguely threatening poetry.

11. Shellac -- Wingwalker

The lynchpin of Shellac's live set. They've played it every time I've seen them. Ostensibly about about a man whose "art" is to transform himself into a giant plane, it is really about Steve and Bob making ludicrous noises with their instruments and the "harmonic percolator" pedal that Steve uses. Also about stretching his arms out and running around the stage yelling "LOOK AT ME! I"M A PLANE!" Always entertaining.

Ronnie James Dio #11
Artist: Dio
Song: Losing My Insanity
(off Magica, 2000)

(youtube version) Losing My Insanity
(live version) Dio Losing My Insanity Live In NYC 29 04 2000

Someone said
Believe in your other side
It's there in your head
And waiting for a ride

So then. This is Dio countdown (if, for some reason, you haven’t noticed). Thus part of my decision on rankings comes from the power I hear and the emotions that are stirred up. And while that’s still true here, I’d be lying if I didn’t say that the just over one minute of intro wasn’t responsible for this song finishing this high. This is Dio perhaps at his most progressive (to a point; the song’s barely 5 minutes, after all), and definitely at his most medieval. I’m fully here for it.

Next on the countdown, we travel into the top 10. I’m not sure how you’re getting there, but I’m taking a boat.

Duuuude. Circle the hookers and get to it immediately. It's a classic. I don't do rowdy parties, but I really want to go to that one.

It's a sad day when one has not yet appreciated the genius that is Adrian Zmed.

Huh. I did not realize that Bachelor Party was such a revered 80s classic.
Yeah, it kick started Tom Hanks career and made him a star. And Tawny Kitaen.

I still have many quotes/scenes from it stuck in my memory:

I just bet my balls, and shook on it.

Is that the foot-long?
And them some.

By the way, my name is Tim, and I work on BMWs.

Let's have a bachelor party! With chicks and guns and firetrucks and hookers and booze!

Bachelor Party/Revenge of the Nerds was my quintessential 80's double-feature.

Well, no.

Bachelor Party was filmed after Bosom Buddies but before Splash, but shelved. When Splash, which was Hanks' breakout role, became a hit, Bachelor Party was released to try to cash in on the momentum. And it did.

After Bosom Buddies and before Splash, he had a couple of memorable star-making TV roles on Happy Days and Family Ties (the unforgettable Uncle Ned) that seemed to really jump start his movie career. But yeah, I think Splash probably put him on another level.

This might've been the easiest medal stand yet- it's all uncommon faces too. As expected, ran out of time for the 13's. Will need to catch up on it and the 10's at a later time. Famous last words, but should sync back in with the 9's.

The 11's

Medal Stand
Gold Oingo Boingo- Something Isn't Right, say it ain't so!
Silver Roxy Music- Thrill of it all, surprised they've not gotten more hardware

My #10 probably should have been in my top 5.
I made the mistake of changing the order when I made the list and not updating my sheet I can see now. So a few are in a different order anyway. For example, I had inner glow at 6 on my sheet but put it at 11 on the submission.

The top 4 are basically locked in, although I put 1 at the top for a reason other than it being my absolute favorite. My real favorite is 2 or 4, depending on the day - both live versions.

Instantly grabbed my attention and didn't let go when the vocals kicked in- I have listened to it 4x already today.

Backing up to the 13s .
Here are a number of new songs added to my favorites.

Borrowed Time - Fanny
Heaven Coming Down - The Tea Party Very familiar with this one and it's right up my alley.
Baby Jane - Slambovian Circus of Dreams - I REALLY liked this song.
The Voice - Moody Blues. it's been way too long since I heard this song.
Noise - Kenny Chesney. One of my known Chesney tunes and already in my favorites list
Wouldn't It Be Nice - Beach Boys. Brings back many good memories of my teenage years
Tree By The River - Iron & Wine. Very nice tune
Touch Me - Doors -> I completely forgot how many great 🚪 tunes I know.

April Wine - Enough is Enough. Just your basic 80s rock song. As with most of their songs has a cool short guitar solo.

Known and liked songs from #12 include Mayfield, Roxy, Strand of Oaks (the Cortez doppelganger I was waiting for), Chesney, Beach Boys, Cure, Iron and Wine, Doors and EWF.

Thoughts on some of the others:

Babylon introduces electronica-sounding cacophony to The Tea Party's proceedings, but the Morrison-like wails never let us forget who this is.

Only a Lad is Randy Newman-esque in its perspective -- completely different musically, of course.

Very Happy Now conveys that in its music as well as its lyrics.

Meanwhile is an excellent example of updated-for-the-80s dinosaur rock that doesn't come off as too desperate to be trendy. Great chorus.

The music and the vocal arrangement of Sour Girl are almost blissful. The lyrics are ... not.

Rumble in Brighton is pretty badass.

If the Strand of Oaks song reminds me of Cortez the Killer, Mazzy Star's Cry Cry reminds me of Helpless.

Tear Off Your Own Head (It's a Doll Revolution) shows that the Bangles' strong power-pop instincts did not disappear after some time off.

The churning guitars of Sinner foreshadow the sound of Judas Priest (and metal in general) in the late '70s and early '80s.

Pot Can't Call the Kettle Black is jaunty.

Students Carve Hearts out of Coal has a fantastic arrangement that goes really well with the lo-fi production. Every sound has a purpose.

This Is a Picture and I come from completely different genres, but they both have kickass guitars and interesting arrangements. That's what I want. I don't care what label gets slapped on it.

#11 SOMETHING ISN'T RIGHT

 You’ve watched pretty much every 80s movie but not Bachelor Party?
It's a sad day when one has not yet appreciated the genius that is Adrian Zmed.

Cant believe the dude is now 70.
I always wondered how he didnt have a bigger career.
Loved him in Bachelor Party
