Album - Core (1992)

No deep lyrics or meaning to this one. Of all the massive hits on their debut album, this was one of my personal favorites. I always loved the groove on this one and it never gets old.

‍ I think this is my top STP song of all time. We’d rock it on the way to swim meets.

Known and liked songs from #10 include Belle and Sebastian (must have heard it on WXPN or in a previous countdown), STP, Roxy, DMB, Chesney, Judas Priest, The Cure (my #1 of theirs), The Doors and EWF.

Thoughts on some of the others:

The Bazaar is one of the most Eastern-inspired Tea Party tracks yet. The use of synths recalls Zeppelin's Kashmir.

Nobody is one of the best from Mitski so far. It's both melodic and danceable, and features compelling lyrics.

All Along the Watchtower is one of those covers that's impossible to screw up, but Slambovia's version far exceeds "not a failure". It uses the Hendrix arrangement as a template but adds their own stylistic touches expertly.

Chains Around Your Heart adds some pop elements to Brian Setzer's brand of rock. I hope we get the title track from the album it comes from.

Choice of Colors is exhilarating and uplifting.

Cry (Alt Version) is achingly beautiful. So are Such Great Heights and I Love You.

In a Different Light is a banger, especially when the wah-wah guitars come in. Hoffs co-wrote this one but her co-author Vicki Peterson sings it. Does it surprise me that this same album has a Big Star cover? No, it does not.

June has some slammin' bass parts and excellent atmospherics.

I learned about April Wine's cover of Bad Side of the Moon during this countdown because the Spotify algorithm keeps feeding it to me. It's extremely compelling and I had no idea it was an Elton original (the B-side of Border Song) until I looked it up. Obviously I can hear early Elton in this version, but I also hear their Canadian compadres The Guess Who.

And sure enough, the first thing the algorithm churned out after the playlist was ... Bad Side of the Moon.

Next Up - Every time we pick an artist for these things, the hope is that we find a track we havent heard before and fall in love with it. The next one from the Sweet is one that I had no idea existed. It stiffed as a single, yet contains all the classic ingredients of the big hits.

This happened for me with Brian Setzer. It's my number one track.

Strand of Oaks #11 - "Last to Swim" (2010)

I've fallen behind on my listening due to real life and pretend football but I've finally gotten to the 11's so here's a brief write-up.

"Last to Swim" is a song from the second Strand album Pope Killdragon. It starts off like early Strand of Oaks with acoustic strumming and a verse sung in hushed tones but as the song progresses, you start to hear elements from Tim's later recordings. Initially there are some synths coloring around the guitar and voice but around the halfway through, the drums crash in and the song starts to resemble the bigger, more epic sounds that would characterize Strand of Oaks going forward.

- "Another Sunny Day" is another B&S song that has always reminded me of The Kinks. I love its cheerful sound.
- "The Peppermint Twist" by Sweet is a fun sock hop rock song.
- I dig the music in "Seek Up" by DMB.
- "In A Different Light" by The Bangles is bitchin.

I really love this song. I mean, we’re at #10, so that’s little surprise that the songs are reaching the “why can’t I rank them all higher?” range. Still, this is one that hits me strong from the opening, that soft intro and lyrics (see above) hook me in every time. Appropriately, there’s a rising and falling of tone, going from softer to full-on rock and back again.

This is a song you can interpret in a number of ways. A journey for sure, full of unpredictability, of sinners and saints. I tend to favor the idea that this song is a stab at the music industry. The artists innocent (at first), but as fame grows, hunted by many forces, many with their own ideas. The promises of fame, of “a miracle”, of “a piece of the universe”, of basically all your dreams. All you have to do is follow them, even though the road isn’t always pretty, that “the doors are never open to a child without a trace of sin”. But then again, if you don’t follow, you could disappear from the spotlight, from public notice. Only a fool would “sail away” from that, right?

I'll never forget seeing them in the late 90's. Opened with this, Scott lizarding around like a gd maniac blaring lyrics through a bullhorn then Dean absolutely shredded the solo. Incredible performance and became my favorite of theirs from then on.

Let’s Do It Again is a 1975 film. Comedy action type film starring Sidney Poitier and Bill Cosby (but I haven’t seen it). Curtis Mayfield was asked to write the soundtrack for it (like some others that I have posted, he wrote, produced, and played guitars on it). He knew The Staple Singers from their time touring together, and asked them to sing it. It took a little bit of cajoling because the lyrics were a bit more sexual than The Staple Singers were used to, but the results were great. Also had some influence in popular culture with a young Christopher Wallace (aka Notorious BIG), as Todd Mayfield describes below.

Let's Do It Again the movie is showing on TCM this Tuesday morning. Based on its title and stars, I always assumed it was a sequel to Uptown Saturday Night and I suppose it is in a way but Poitier and Cosby play characters with different names from the first one.

I am 4 for 4 with this type of discovery on my MAD artists as well. Maybe not my #1 songs, but each artist had at least an album or two I had never listened to or had massively under listened to. I wouldn't be as excited to put these lists together if that wasn't the case and I wasn't discovering new stuff as I went. I finished my playlist for Part 4 yesterday and even with a band that has been my most listened to band for a few years, there was an album I stupidly skipped over too much and songs (mostly covers! ) that I hadn't listened to yet. As I was listening and adding, the songs and albums were surprising me a bit, which is why I wanted to do it even more.

So as I read more about the artists and where they are coming from, it at least changes my initial thinking about covers. I am trying. On my working playlist for next Round, I had as many as 4 covers. If/when we get to it, we will see if any made the cut.

That said, I still don't like them in regular albums when I listen and my most negative reactions to songs in MAD v3 has been from covers. When there are 30+ people and personalities doing these things, no way people are picking stuff that hits with everybody.

And IIRC, she was married to fellow Emergency! cast member Bobby Troupe, who also has one of the great one line scenes in movies; In M*A*S*H*, he was Hawkeye and Trapper's jeep driver when they were in Japan, and annoyed by the whole chaos of the scene, he said ****** army...****** army...****** army jeep!

If you like a song when you first hear it, then find out it's a cover, do you like it less?

No, not at all. Most of the time when I find out I listen to the original for a comparison. I figure no matter which I like better, chances are I get some new music I like. There have been a few times in the MADs were I have preferred the cover - the Hoffs one I mentioned this time and there was a Nina Simone I liked more last round off the top of my head.

My most negative reactions are when it's songs I know and love, but even here there is no predictability what will get the reaction. Examples here are Dino Jr's Just Like Heaven and Cash's Hurt. Despise both of these.

90% of the time my reaction is more of a shrug. They are OK, but I'd rather hear what they wrote and played when I can. IMO covers are fun for B-sides and concerts, but I would prefer them not on the main albums of the bands I am listening to. The only time I seek them out are on tribute albums like the Nativity in Black type of stuff.

I have to. I'm listening to all of the material I can find. I'm seven albums in for Ms Lennox. There are only 18 this time. Setzer had 36, not including the Christmas albums. That takes time.

When I picked Chvrches i had no idea they did so many covers.
Some were brilliant, some awful, but they were trying things which is the most important ingredient in a cover.
Doing a note for note cover is boring to everyone, except for someone who hasnt heard the original.

As for Round 4. One Scandinavian artist is certain.
The other artist requires more thought. Or maybe I just stick to one this time.

One of the Door's oddest songs, this is part of an epic poem / performance piece by Jim called The Celebration of the Lizard. He had wanted the entire thing to take the side of an album, but they had trouble getting the whole thing down. The whole printed poem does appear on the inside of this album (Waiting for the Sun), and the entire Celebration is on the Absolutely Live album, and this live-in-the-studio version appears on a compilation. I like it - would have been cool on an album.

I met my now wife 16 years ago. We were supposed to be married 14 years, but it's only been 13 and we have a 14 year old kid. She was a catholic school teacher at that time. She wasn't anymore when she told them she was pregnant. At that time I was a personal trainer. I became a part time server to pay the bills.
