Middle Aged Dummies - Artist - Round 3 - #1's have been posted! (3 Viewers)

Is very strange. I have been playing catch up so long, now that it's over, I don't know what to do with the rest of my life.
There will be a new list tomorrow, you know.

You can always start getting your next pick ready to go. I'm about halfway through the Annie Lennox collection.

I’m behind in posting but been really enjoying these last few lists

High fives:

Dead man’s party - fun song

Summer’s Day - interesting lyrics, I dig

Wicked garden - known, overplayed in HS

Stray cat strut - another known and really liked

Superfly - didn’t know this one, I like!

Typical situation- one of his best

Born - One of Kenny’s I didn’t know. Fun song like many of his

Good vibrations - probably my favorite beach boys

Boy with a coin - iron and wine continues to impress

- "Good Vibrations" is my favorite BB's song, and one of my favorite songs in general. I love the vocals, the harmonizing, the trippy music, the segues, everything and more.
- The delivery of the vocals go really well with the music in "Sun in The Sky" by Destroyer.
- "Cinnamon Girl" is one of my favorite Neil songs, and Hoffs and Sweet do a great job on their cover.
- "Superfly" is super funky by Curtis.
- The piano intro makes me instantly like "Seeing Other People" by B&S. This song has a nice flow to it. I wonder if my favorite song by them is coming up.
- I heard "Stray Cat Strut" yesterday on the car radio, and I took the long way home just to listen to the rest of the song while cruising down the road.
- "Summer's Day" by the Circus band is good. I've watched some of the videos put up of them. They're an interesting group of characters. I bet their shows are fun.
- "Teenage Rampage" is a fun sounding anthem by Sweet.
- I like those vocals on "Special Care." She's belting it. I like that outro. The rest of it is vanilla. I'm kidding! Motown made me say that.
- I like the spunkiness of "Dead Man's Party."

I have to take a break. I need to change my subscription contest lineup for the 37th time before it closes tonight.

Strand of Oaks #5 - "Plymouth" (2014)

"Plymouth" is another song from the HEAL album but it originally came out a few months earlier in a different form. That version has since been renamed as "Plymouth - acoustic" even though Tim is clearly playing an electric guitar. He improved upon it for the eventual album release adding a bit of U2 flavor and the synthesizer washes he'd been trying to do for the previous two albums.

I've read every HEAL review and contemporary interview I could find but there's scant information about this song in particular. I have no idea if the Plymouth in the title refers to a town or a bitchin Duster he had in high school. Tim said the line about being "Naked in the Great Lakes / Underneath the shine of Mars / I begged my friend to just let me drift off" is based on an actual event so I looked if any of the Midwestern burgs named Plymouth are on the Great Lakes. The Plymouths in Wisconsin and Michigan are pretty close and there's a Plymouth in Indiana that's an hour away from his boyhood home but further from a lake. I guess I'll never know but I do know this is yet another love song to his muse Sue and how they first got together.

I met you when your hair was short and my ego had barely formed
It took a jug of wine just to ask you home
We took black and white pictures, with your hooded sweatshirt on
We were beautiful, broken, and young

5's PLAYLIST

DestroyerThe Dreaded MarcoSun in the Sky
This probably should’ve been my #1 but the next 4 are all still right there.

I’m not sure why, but the opening line of this song grabbed me immediately the first time I heard it. Then it just gets better. His lyrics always intrigue me.

I recently Googled this song and was pleased to see it is one of Bejar’s favorites too.

I'm looking forward to the Bell & Sebastian playlist at the end - I discovered in another draft that they weren't what I imagined they were (never actually listened) and really enjoyed it. I started in on the #5 playlist and loved the B&S song on there.

Sorry I missed this one (will follow to the end now) and looking forward to jumping in on #4 (assuming there is one).
What's up, Doc? Glad to see you here.

@simey asked me to come back to the boards to take part in Summerpalooza, and I did. I'll hang in music threads and the Jets thread and maybe lurk a few other topics.

Things have been well during my time off, but I surely missed the music threads and the people that make them great.

- "Good Vibrations" is my favorite BB's song, and one of my favorite songs in general. I love the vocals, the harmonizing, the trippy music, the segues, everything and more.
I didn't get a chance to do a writeup on it, but yeah, not much to say as it's an all-timer. It came in at #5 for me when I put the list together, but on any other day, it could have easily have been #1. But that's how strongly I feel about the rest of the ones ahead.

Also would be lying if I didn't think of orange Sunkist soda whenever I hear GV (that's Jim Peterik, former lead singer of Survivor and Ides of March, singing in the commercial)

- I hear Andrew Bird calling  "Lusitania" is another good Andrew song that includes a female on vocals.
- The lyrics are front and center in "Prayer to God" by Shellac.
- April Wine's "Weeping Widow" needs more cowbell, and I remember the rockin' song "Roller." 🤘
- The chorus in "Walking Wounded" by The Tea Party has a theatrical feel to it. It's good.
- I also like the chorus in "Home" by Blue October.
- "Heaven" and "Blue Light" have a similar vibe to them. Both are relaxing tunes.
- "Hellraiser" by Sweet sounds like it would be in the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
- "Re-Make/Re-Model" by Roxy Music rocks. I like this side of them, and I like that outro. 🥁
- "Goshen '97" by SoO is full speed ahead, and "Plymouth" is a moonlight drive. Both really good.
- "Born" by Chesney is a lyrical party.
- "Nowhere to Run" is a great cover. I'm team Stax, but love Motown, too.
- "Your Wildest Dreams" by the Moodies is a feel good song.
- As mentioned recently, I love the intro to "Interstate Love Song," and the song is one of my favorites by STP.
- I like the spirit of "Typical Situation" by DMB. I like the sense of freedom within the song.
- "Lies" kinda made me want to do the Safety Dance.
- The vocals in "Victim of Changes" by JP are pretty darn good.
- "Boy With A Coin" has interesting music in it, and I like the guitar in "Sodom, South Ga."
- My favorite part in "The WASP" is the keyboards/organ. Ray was great. Everyone is good on this trippy bluesy track.
- Dig the intro in "Cold" by The Cure.
- Dig the guitar solo in "Dream Evil" by Dio.
- "Got To Get You Into My Life" is another great cover. I mentioned back at the end of June that this was the last song that EWF played during the concert. It was a crowd pleaser. All of their songs were, and so many could have been the big final song. That's how great their catalog is.

There had better be. I'm halfway through the Annie Lennox stuff, and I have my pick after that pretty much selected.

I remember that commercial!
They had a whole series of them from the late '70s-early '80s. The one I couldn't find, which I remember the most, is the one where some guy (or woman) was swinging on a log across a lake.

 I’m fairly certain #4 will be an international dame I’ve been crushing on lately with two “music projects”, although one is far more prominent.

Heart?
Ace of base!
Didnt Doug B do Heart already?
As a lover of Scandanavian pop, for Ace of Base, I could do a top 31 easily enough.
The songs past #20 would be pretty average as the blonde one, Linn, couldnt cope with success and left in 1997.
The stress of having a severe fear of flying and having to catch 195 flights in a calendar year did her in. Well, a knife attack from a deranged stalker didnt help either. Then again, Clive Davis forcing her to do 2 vocals on tracks was the final straw.

One of the two I’m considering is an artist I can see you claiming.

I had very much thought of him when I was targeting something fun and 80s for this round.

Awesome. Great to see you around again!

I think I have a good artist for next round and it's one I can actually write more about other than "I really like this song/part!!!"

I'm in the exact opposite situation. I really enjoy the small amount of what I know from their catalog, and they're so far out of my wheelhouse/comfort zone that I doubt I'll do them justice.

That's why I'm listening to all the material. Dedication, baby.

Ronnie James Dio #5
Artist: Dio
Song: Dream Evil
(off Dream Evil, 1987)

(youtube version) Dream Evil (2016 Remaster)
(live version) Dio-Dream Evil Live In Reggio Emilia 1987

Somewhere on the morning road
Just waiting for you
Some things that just could never be
Are calling up a spell so you can see, yeah

.
Subject-wise, this one’s very straightforward. A song about nightmares, about inner dreams. About how most people try to ignore these sort of dreams and intrusive thoughts, though Dio (the band, though also the singer) pushes for facing these fears head on.

What do I like about this song? It’s #5, so we’ve been in “I love everything” territory for a while. The imagery, the tone, the captivating vocals, Goldy’s guitar work (not Vivian Campbell, but not trying to me. I have trouble capturing it all into words. So I’ll leave it there, especially with the #4s due out any time now.

Next on the countdown, while Ronnie tells you “don’t” do this or that in this song, he left something out

Had this in the 20's on my list. At this point I figured it didn't make the cut. Better late than never!

I've changed our moving plans because I hate myself. Starting tomorrow:

8/8 - I fly to Chicago with one cat
8/9 - Fly back to Seattle
8/10 - OH and I fly to Chicago with two cats
8/11 - Fly back to Seattle
8/12 - OH and I fly to Chicago with two cats
8/13 - I fly back to Seattle; OH stays in Chicago
8/14 - movers come
8/15 and 8/16 - cleaning, selling my car, etc.
8/17 - fly with my mom, stepfather and one cat to Chicago

Fin.
You have SIX cats?

I just took it as thought she brought them along to keep her company (cat lady...)
I knew that wasn't the case because she didn't include them in the "fly back to Seattle" parts. Because I am observant and you are ... not. ;)
I'm more concerned about the first 3 cats wandering around Chicago on their own.
Did they make it?

And @kupcho1 has probably already cheated and listened to it.

80 years since we kicked Hitler's *** and yet we still have to look at YouTube in German. Sad.
I’ve been meaning to drop that into Google Translate. I’m sure part of it mentions Tim.
