The Beach Boyszamboni"In My Room"
When I was putting my list together, I didn't expect this to end up in the top 5, but it just kept drifting up and up. Just a beautiful (albeit brief) song that showed early signs of what these guys could bring to the table in terms of harmonies. Per Wiki, Brian Wilson explained in 1990: "When Dennis, Carl and I lived in Hawthorne as kids, we all slept in the same room. One night I sang the song 'Ivory Tower' to them and they liked it. Then a couple of weeks later, I proceeded to teach them both how to sing the harmony parts to it. It took them a little while, but they finally learned it. We then sang this song night after night. It brought peace to us. When we recorded 'In My Room,' there was just Dennis, Carl and me on the first verse... and we sounded just like we did in our bedroom all those nights. This story has more meaning than ever since Dennis' death."
It's not only about the harmonies to me. I'm not a big lyric guy, but the loneliness and alienation expressed in them is remarkable for people this young. Beats the hell out of anything Paul Simon ever wrote.
Good point - didn’t even get into the lyrics. Interesting side note that Charles Manson once stated that The Beach Boys ripped off the song from an earlier tune he wrote called “In My Cell” (in all seriousness).

pril WineFalguySign of the Gypsy Queen
As I told @falguy, this would be my #1 April Wine song with a bullet. I picked it high in the covers draft, only learning in recent years that it was originally recorded by some dude named Lorence Hud.

I also like the live version from Live in London with the triple lead guitar attack: https://youtu.be/DkvS_JjbyGs?t=1526
thanks for the links. Always loved the 3-headed monster guitars they offered.

I knew it was a cover, had never bothered to listen to the original. The AW version is not all that different in this case. Interesting note I see on Hud is that he wrote the lyrics, music and played all the instruments and vocals.

eta. They really did put on a great show live. 🎸 🥁 🙂 🤘

Ronnie James Dio #3
Artist: Black Sabbath
Song: Heaven and Hell
(off Heaven and Hell, 1980)

(youtube version) Heaven and Hell
(Live version1: 12+ minutes) Black Sabbath - Heaven And Hell (Live)
(Live version 2: ) (Dio - Heaven And Hell Live 1986

They say that life's a carousel
Spinning fast, you gotta ride it well
The world is full of Kings and Queens
Who blind your eyes and steal your dreams
It's Heaven and Hell, oh well
And they'll tell you black is really white
The moon is just the sun at night
And when you walk in golden halls
You get to keep the gold that falls

If you’re wondering what the big difference is between the two live versions, it’s mostly from crowd work. Still, feel free to check out one or both; they’re worth your time.

Anyway, this is a song you might have heard. Easy to put this as Dio’s best song with Black Sabbath, and one of his best in any form. That classic intro, the strong musicianship throughout, and Dio belted out the lyrics loud and strong. Even Dio himself put it as one of his favorites. I wouldn’t blame you if this was your #1. On some days, I’d make the same call, just not this time.

From Ronnie himself, this song is about each human being's ability to choose between doing good and doing evil, essentially that each person has "heaven and hell" inside themselves. Though there’s certainly also the idea of other (groups of) people pushing in certain directions.
.

Next on the countdown, you’d think using a flashlight would be easier, but whatever brings you that (inner) brightness.

#3 - Fox on the Run

Producer - Sweet (Andy Scott)
Writer - Sweet
Chart Positions - UK #2, Australia #1, Germany #1, US #5
Album - Desolation Boulevard US Edition
Year - 1975
Lead Vocal - Brian Connolly
Steve Priest Vocal - Lead Chip Ins “Foxy on the run” x 3

Notes - We saw the original Chinn/Chapman produced version at #31.
Now we get the version everyone knows and loves. It has been popular throughout the years but had a major resurgence thanks to Marvel Movie Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. A re-release made #1 on the ITunes Rock Chart in 2016.

Fox on the Run is about a groupie that made its way through the band. Unnamed.

It made #1 in Australia and was the #1 song there for the entire year and seventh biggest selling song of the decade.

Sweet were pissed off with sub par offerings from the Chinn Chapman songwriting. They also resented the production of the original version by Phil Wainman and Chinn/Chapman as a “live” song.

Sweet were wanting to write and record songs in the style of “German Marching Songs
The US label told the band there was a hit here. Fix it.

Just before Christmas [1974],” Andy Scott recalls, “everybody just happened to be at my house when the managing director of RCA called to say: ‘We’re not getting the right answers from Mike and Nicky, but we really believe that Fox On The Run could be a hit’. And a week later we were in Ian Gillan’s studio, where nobody knew us; keeping things cloak and dagger was vital.”

Although the song is credited to the entire group, really it was Scott’s baby. The subject matter was an unspecified groupie, hence the couplet: ‘You talk about just every band/But the names you drop are second-hand’.
“Those lyrics were hastily written in the pub before recording the song for the album, hence the fact that it lacked a final verse,” Scott says, laughing. “We vowed that when we re-recorded it we would re-write the words, but never did.”

As a “budding producer”, Scott oversaw the session (but again the label said: ‘Produced by Sweet’). His primary goal was to sex up the track for radio. In the end, however, the guitarist actually added an element that would prove crucial: “The rest of the band had gone to the pub when I incorporated that pulse-type synthesiser sound at the start and stuck it onto the end as well,” he remembers. “Everyone loved it.”

RCA rush-released the reboot of Fox On The Run without bothering to notify Chinn and Chapman, who promptly jumped onto a plane back to England.
Mike’s words: ‘Well, you’ve finally done it, haven’t you?’ were the best compliment anyone could have paid me,” a smiling Scott says now.

The song title pissed off Manfred Mann
Manfred Mann released a completely different song called "Fox On The Run" in 1968, which made #5 UK and #97 US. Their song has a different lyrical theme: it's about feeling like a fox on the run after his girl leaves him.

You can't copyright a title, but Tony Hazzard, who wrote the Manfred Mann song, thought it was bad form. "'Fox On The Run' is such a distinctive title that any writer worth his or her salt would leave well alone," he said in his Songfacts interview. "They even copied the rising harmonies! As you might gather, I didn't think much of it."

Next Up - A surprise hit for Sweet after everyone had buried the band. Its an epic.

Chvrches

#3 - Death Stranding

Producer - Chvrches
Writer - Chvrches
Album - Death Stranding Timefall (Original Music from the World of Death Stranding)
Year - 2019
Notes - The makers of the video game Death Stranding approached Chvrches to make a song for their next game. Heres Lauren.

“We were really excited about the opportunity to work with (Hideo) Kojima because we have been fans of his work for a long time. He has always been such a visionary in the gaming world and we were honored to be involved in the project. The concept of Death Stranding is so unique and really felt to us like it was challenging people to care about the world they create — in the game and otherwise. We wrote this song specifically for Death Stranding, thinking of the themes of the game and what it is trying to say to people.

The video which was attached has such unique visuals adding to the attractiveness of the song, but it got withdrawn by the creator during the run down ffs. Ive had to do two youtube links. One for the song and one for the looks. Lauren can be hit and miss with her makeup and look, but looks stunning here. An emotional song with hooks galore. Heading into this I had not heard it. Its brilliant. Plain and simple.

Next Up - The top two have many similarities, but the difference between #1 and #2 for me is the structure. #1 builds up and finishes brilliantly. #2 starts off fantastically but carries on too long and the change in direction doesnt work as well, but that first few minutes is all class.

Currently listening to the three's and come across Alice and Space and man, the Slambovian's are really hitting a chord with. This one sounds quite a bit like Every Little Light - maybe that's why I like it so much. Good stuff. (y)

That Chvrches song is amazing. Makes me want to go back and play Death Stranding. I never finished because the game loop got really repetitive but I'd like to make it to where this song is featured.

This is not only my favorite Dio song, it's my favorite song of all time on most days. It came out a few months before I started high school and got me through some tough times. To me it was saying, don't worry about what others think of you or want you to do, live life for yourself.

Currently listening to the three's and come across Alice and Space and man, the Slambovian's are really hitting a chord with. This one sounds quite a bit like Every Little Light - maybe that's why I like it so much. Good stuff. (y)
I was listening to the 3s early and my wife said she thought the vocals on this sounded like Neil Diamond with a bit of Tom Petty.

Deal.

Yeah thanks. Well to the band i guess lol.
The deleted film clip brings in the game and the band singing. It was awesome.
Like mrs Rannous I was tempted to put my unheard one at #1, but couldnt pull the trigger.

Thought the line “Lights Go Dark” was “Lights Go Down”.
Never get a Glaswegian singer to have two words in a row finishing with O. Unintentionally comedic.

Think Fox on the Run is more unique than Jump. Slightly lol

Fox on the Run, both versions, reached the top 5 in the UK and Australia.
The Mannfred Mann version only reached #97 in the US, but was at least top 10 everywhere else.

...and then there were three's...

Blind Alley - Fanny
🦊 On The Run - Sweet
The Other Side Of Life - The Moody Blues
Rock This Town - Stray Cats
Move On Up - Curtis Mayfield
🕯️Both Ends Burning🕯️ - Roxy Music
In My Room - The Beach Boys
And Your Bird Can Sing - Hoffs & Sweet
Heaven and Hell - Black Sabbath
Sign Of The Gypsy Queen - April Wine

- As noted back at the beginning of this thing, I had the 45 of "Fox on The Run" back when it came out. I played it non-stop until the next 45.
- "Sign of the Gypsy Queen" is my other favorite from The Nature of the Beast, and I love that the songs are back to back on the album.
- "Living After Midnight" is my second favorite from Judas Priest.
- I've danced a time or two to "Best of My Love." Great song and great vocals.
- "Trippin On A Hole In A Paper Heart" is one of my favorites from the album and in general from STP.
- Love the music in "Move On Up."
- "Budd" is a moody song that slowly builds to emotionally charged moments and then a climatic ending. I like it.
- "Blind Alley" is good, and the drumming 🥁 really stands out to me on this one.
- Love the use of the violin in "Dancing Nancies."
- "Suki in the Graveyard" is a fun flowing song. 2 more rounds to see if my fav shows up. Even if it doesn't, I've liked all the songs chosen.
- "Fade Into You" is a song I could fade into.
- I never knew the song title of "The Other Side of Life" until now. I've always liked the song.
- "Times Square" is good, and I especially like the music.
- The strumming and vocals go together like peanut butter and jelly in "Upward Over the Mountain."
- The music and lyrics connect well in "From The Edge of the Deep Green Sea." I like that guitar starting at the 5:37 mark.
- On "Alice in Space," I caught a little snippet of the Beatles near the end with the Hela, heba, helloa. They added in some Beatles early in the countdown on one of their tunes, too.
- I like the lyrics in "Moving On (So Long)."
- "In My Room" is great example of their early 60s harmonies. "God Only Knows" from the last list is great, and only three years after "In My Room."
- "Archipelago" is a lyrically interesting song. The violin parts are pretty.
- I didn't realize OB did "Stay." I remember liking it in the 80s. Still do like it.
- "Rock This Town" is fun rockabilly.
- I like that bass in "Heaven and Hell."
- I bet "Young" was big with the younger generation, especially when it first came out.
- "Death Stranding" has a soundtrack sound to it.
- I like the guitar and vocals in "Emerald."
- "Should've Been Me" is an upbeat song with sad lyrics.
- I like the lyrics in "Shut In."
- I like the guitar in "Wild Child."
- I like the intro to "Both Ends Burning."
- "And Your Bird Can Sing" is a good cover. Hoffs has a good voice for it and so does Matthew. The music is good, too. I wonder what Paul and Ringo think.

This Live in London version -- and the version of Just Between You and Me from the same show -- were edited into videos that were played on MTV. Thus, this was how I first heard the song. And it is spectacular.

Those are what prompted me to go out and buy the cassette of Nature of the Beast.

One of the "big" Roxy Music songs hasn't appeared yet, so I'm presuming it's in Binky's top 2. There's another song of theirs I'm really fond of that hasn't appeared yet. The interesting thing there is that there are two versions of it that are so radically different from each other that they may as well be different songs. If it's on the list, is it represented by one version or both?

Round 3

Gonna be tough to beat my love for the previous round. Let's see how this goes...

Fox on The Run. Still cool after all these years
* Stay - Oingo Boingo.
* Alice in Space. Another heart for the Slambovians.
The Other Side of Life. Haven't listened to the Moody Blues is so long and that's a shame
Trippin' on a Hole in a Paper Heart - STP.
Rock This Town. My favorite Cats song!
Move On Up - Curtis Mayfield
* Shut In - Strand of Oaks - Great song start to finish
In My Room - The Beach Boys. It has been YEARS since I heard this song. Gorgeous
Living After Midnight. Judas Priest bringing the R&R
* Upward Over the Mountain - iron and Wine
* Morning Song To Sally - Jerry Jeff continues to impress
Best of My Love - Emotions

April Wine - Sign of The Gypsy Queen. I'm sure most everyone knows this tune. Just a great song off of The Nature of The Beast. My final 2 songs are off of Harder...Faster which is my favorite album of theirs.

*=songs that I hadn't heard prior to this

p.s. I'd say it went pretty well!

Three is a magic number, yes it is. So there was a bit of magic with the #3s. Both a selection of incredibly (and incredible) well-known songs and some new experiences. Let me pick out a “few”

Selected (and shuffled) #3s:
Times Square - Destroyer
Upward Over the Mountain - Iron & Wine
Dancing Nancies - Dave Matthews
Should’ve Been Me - Mitski
Both Ends Burning - Roxy Music (/Bryan Ferry)
Best of My Love - The Emotions (via \Earth, Wind & Fire)
From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea - The Cure
Fade Into You - Mazzy Star
Archipelago - Andrew Bird
Death Stranding - Chvrches
Morning Song to Sally - Jerry Jeff Walker
Living After Midnight - Judas Priest

Shuffle Adventures:
It’s the #3s, so let’s go for a triple here. Fortunately, I had Sweet’s classic “Fox on the Run” followed by April Wine’s phenomenal “Sign of the Gypsy Queen” with the equally (personally) well-known “The Other Side of Life” by The Moody Blues. A very powerful trio (to say the least!) that also flowed with each other well.

3.
Upward Over the Mountain
from The Creek That Drank The Cradle (2002)

So may the sunrise bring hope
Where it once was forgotten
Sons are like birds
Flying upward over the mountain

A song about leaving home, the relationship between a mother and son, and the journey all of us take as when we forge our own way. "Upward Over The Mountain" is a masterclass in how to write an instrumental chorus. It kinda dwarfs the rest of the album a bit, but that's because it's just ridiculously good, not because the rest of the album lacks quality.

Known and liked songs from #4 include Sweet (an all-timer), Setzer (another excellent rendition of a song that's impossible to screw up), Mayfield/Impressions, Roxy (the YouTube algorithm likes to feed this one to me a lot), DMB, the Beach Boys (probably in my top 3), the Bangles, The Cure (one of my high school friends was obsessed with this song), The Doors and EWF.

Thoughts on some of the others:

Independently Happy is uplifting and its music matches its lyrics well.

Who Do You Want to Be followed perfectly out of Ballroom Blitz, as it has a similar quirky and chaotic energy.

Unnecessary Drama is one of my favorites from Belle and Sebastian so far -- it's got a hell of a melody and beat. It reminds me a bit of the New Pornographers.

Every Little Light is heartwarming.

The Moodies let Patrick Moraz run wild on Rock 'N Roll Over You.

Passing Out flows really well and has some memorable guitar parts.

I know the original of Green Manalishi but had not heard the Judas Priest cover. It's got some fierce riffage.

Jaded Lover has such a fun arrangement for a subject matter that is not all that much fun.

Get Out has forceful basslines -- and lead vocals.

Kaputt makes good use of synths and atmospherics -- sounds quite a bit like late-period Roxy Music or early solo Ferry, in fact. Wiki says the album it comes from heralded a "jazz-infused, lounge music-inspired, sophisti-pop direction," and that certainly shows here.

Canaveral's lyrics are a doozy, as OH said, but the start-and-stop, jumpy music is a perfect match for them. What might impress me most about Shellac is how PRECISE their rhythm section is.

Don't Talk to Strangers is ambitious and compelling -- an anthem for disaffected teens of the 80s.

Stand Back is one of the April Wine albums I listened to during this exercise. Oowatanite is a banger and "important" enough to the band to have stayed in the live rotation after its writer and lead singer Jim Clench departed. On at least one live album, it appears and is sung by Clench's replacement on bass, Steve Lang.

Spotify algorithm continues to spit April Wine, this time Roller was first.

Welp, this has turned into a chore. But thankfully unlike the last MAD countdown when I couldn't keep up, it's for vastly different reasons. Whittling this down to 3 has become (predictably?) impossible. So many hearts, but only 3 pieces of hardware. And with this the 4 horse race is now 5...

The 3's

Medal Stand
Gold Mazzy Star- Fade Into You, this was always going to snipe someone's medal, all timer
Silver Blue October- Moving On (So Long), when they hit they hit hard
Bronze Fanny- Blind Alley, kinda crazy I couldn't justify getting this any higher than bronze
Honorable Mention1 It blows me away that neither Dancing Nancies nor Trippin' On A Hole In A Paper Heart got on the stand. This was the one left from each I thought for sure would medal, but here we are.
Honorable Mention2 Judas Priest, Curtis Mayfield, Stray Cats, Roxy, and Sweet all earned shout outs this round. Hearts that would've medaled in an earlier round, but now? Notsomuch.

Medal Count
Tea Party - 4 gold, 1 silver, 3 bronze (17)
STP - 3 gold, 2 silver, 3 bronze (16)
DMB- 3 gold, 2 silver, 2 bronze (15)
Fanny - 3 gold, 1 silver, 4 bronze (15)
Blue October - 3 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze (14)
The Doors - 3 gold, 1 silver (11)
The Beach Boys - 2 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze (11)
The Slambovian Circus of Dreams - 2 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze (10)
Mazzy Star - 2 gold, 1 bronze (7)
Oingo Boingo - 1 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze (6)
Brian Setzer - 2 silver, 2 bronze (6)
Jerry Jeff Walker - 1 gold, 1 silver (5)
Susanna Hoffs - 1 gold, 2 bronze (5)
Roxy Music - 2 silver, 1 bronze (5)
Dio - 2 silver (4)
Belle & Sebastian - 2 silver (4)
April Wine - 1 silver, 2 bronze (4)
Iron & Wine- 1 silver, 1 bronze (3)
Sweet - 1 silver, 1 bronze (3)
Strand of Oaks - 1 silver (2)
Judas Priest - 1 silver (2)
Mitski - 1 silver (2)
Steve Albini - 1 silver (2)
EWF- 1 bronze (1)
Curtis Mayfield- 1/2 bronze (0.5)
The Cure- 1/2 bronze (0.5)

Strand of Oaks #3: "Shut In" (2014)

This is my top ranked song from my favorite Strand album HEAL. I don't believe I've told the story of Tim and Sue's car crash on Christmas night of 2013. They were driving home to Philadelphia from visiting Tim's parents in Indiana when their Honda spun on some black ice, crossed the median and was struck by an oncoming truck. Both survived but Tim was knocked unconscious and fractured all the ribs on one side of his chest. He'd already booked time with his producer to finish the mix of HEAL so he kept the date in spite of his injuries. The working mix had a big reverby Born in the USA sound but they decided to back most of it out for the final release.

"Shut In" is probably the most Springsteenish song on the album so I'm kind of curious what it sounded like prior to the late changes. It's another autobiographical song about staying in the house day drinking while not out on tour. As you might expect, the verses are rather depressing but there's hope to be found in the chorus and coda.

I lose my faith in people
Why even take the time
You've got your problems
I've got mine

Know my name, know I mean it
It's not as bad as it seems
And we try in our own way to get better
Even if we're alone

Silver Blue October- Moving On (So Long), when they hit they hit hard
Friggin mazzy stealing my gold like that. :kicksrock:
I'll full listen after we finish this thing, but I'll be surprised if anyone tops that master piece...and we've had some fantastic adds throughout.
I’ll respect the song, but Fox on the run and riders on the storm are probably my gold and silver overall. Other than 💙🎃 of course.

If we’re talking personal favorites, one of Kenny’s not heard yet is towards the top.

I was pretty sure I had heard Goshen '97 before -- and then I found the setlist for my one Strand of Oaks show and confirmed it.

3 bangers:

🦊 on the run - mentioned before. A top 1%er for me out of all 930(?) songs.

Sukie - new to me, will not be the last time I hear it

Alice in space - it’s probably just the name but I’m a fan of Alice in wonderland, so…

Trippin on a hole - I’d forgotten how much I like STP

Rock this town - love the jive

Shut in - SOO started the count down strong and is coming back to me

Young - one of his most fun songs

In my room - 😇

Living after midnight - Judas doesn’t always hit with me, but this reminds me of high school and riding in a friend’s Camaro

Best of my love - classic

Heaven and hell - another classic

ETA - my likes are about to go over 19 hours of music, a lot of it new to me or forgotten 👍🏽

As I said, the #3s have my #1 from several artists:

Sweet -- Fox on the Run (single version)
STP -- Trippin' on a Hole in a Paper Heart
Stray Cats -- Rock This Town
Curtis Mayfield -- Move on Up (album version)
Roxy Music -- Both Ends Burning (if we don't count their live-only cover of Like a Hurricane)
Judas Priest -- Living After Midnight
April Wine -- Sign of the Gypsy Queen

Other known and liked songs from #3 include the Moodies, Mazzy Star (it was the only song of theirs I knew coming in), Beach Boys (their masterpiece before Pet Sounds), Hoffs, The Doors and EWF/Emotions.

Thoughts on some of the others:

Emerald is majestic and gets the '90s quiet-loud-quiet-loud thing down really well.

Stay has one of Elfman's best vocals.

Love the organ on Sukie in Graveyard.

Should've Been Me is bouncy and danceable.

Alice in Space is charming, and the Beatles touches at the end are nice.

Shut In, which setlist.fm says I saw live in 2015, has an '80s "heartland rock" structure to it. I could totally see Mellencamp singing this. The guitar work halfway through the song is what gives it away as '10s indie rock.

Young has a good melody and excellent use of slide guitar.

From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea is epic.

Morning Song to Sally does the introspective folk thing real well. So does Upward Over the Mountain.

If Young Americans was un-suave, it would be Times Square.

Archipelago has a great vocal and arrangement.

Budd is about the same guy that Filter's Hey Man Nice Shot is about. Pennsylvania State Treasurer Budd Dwyer was indicted for corruption. Rather than face the charges, he pulled out a gun and killed himself at a press conference. I watched it happen on TV. The noisy guitar at the end is a pretty good representation of what the chaos of that day was like.

Heaven and Hell is another soaring epic from Dio (this time with Sabbath).

A new twist from the Spotify algorithm -- Buffalo Springfield's Flying on the Ground is Wrong.

2. Charity Ball
Album: Charity Ball (1971) and Canadian version of Fanny (1970)
Writers: Jean Millington, June Millington and Alice de Buhr
Lead vocals: Jean Millington with Nickey Barclay, June Millington and Alice de Buhr

They were ready.

If you only know one Fanny original, it's probably this one. The title track of their second album was their first charting single (hitting US #40) and their most successful song during the band's original run (Butter Boy didn't become a hit until after the band broke up).

More than any other Fanny song, Charity Ball is the one whose influence can be heard in subsequent all-female bands such as The Runaways and The Go-Gos. It is utterly infectious, oozes enthusiasm and rocks the hell out -- if you want to know how women adapted Chuck Berry, this is it, and the band are utterly locked in. And for good reason it is my highest-ranking Fanny original.

Like many of the best songs that rock out, Charity Ball is about ... rocking out. As with its music, its lyrics are a celebration of musical performance, of partying, and of the potential of love in the air.

Dance, ooh, stand, ooh
Move to charity ball
Dance, ooh, stand, ooh
Move to charity ball

Get the musicians ready
Get them good and hot, good and hot, woo
Stand and deliver
Give 'em everything you've got
You got my number

Charity ball
Ooh, stand, ooh
Move to charity ball
Dance, ooh, stand, ooh

Move to charity ball
Come on and grab a partner
We're gonna roll 'till the break of dawn

And I need you
I need you
I need you
Oh, charity ball

Oh yeah, now I'm ready (I wanna be there)
Yes, I'm ready (I wanna be there)
Oh, I'm ready (I wanna be there)
Charity ball
Oh, I'm ready (I wanna be there)
(I wanna be there)
(I wanna be there)

In keeping with the celebratory, communal spirit of the music and lyrics, Charity Ball is one of the few Fanny songs that is sung in unison by all four members, though Jean Millington gets some exhortations to herself in its second half. It was co-written by the Millington sisters and Alice de Buhr, which means that de Buhr has writing credits on my top 3 Fanny originals (and on no other songs in my top 31).

Not surprisingly, Charity Ball is the Fanny song with the most versions that can be found online; four (three studio, one live) appear on the box set alone. It was a regular part of their live set for their entire run and one of the first originals they worked on after getting signed to Reprise. The initial studio version laid down in 1970 has an intro and a brief passage that were dropped from the final arrangement, but has verses that are faster than the final version; it feels rushed compared to its ultimate form despite being more than 20 seconds longer. This "First Version" leads off the Canadian version of the debut album, which used the incorrect master tapes and may reflect an early version of the running order. Wisely, the band decided to rework it for the second album, improving the pace, smoothing out the harmonies, trimming some of the fat and and losing none of the energy from the initial version. The "Second Version," which kicks off the second album and serves as its title track, is almost identical to the "Single Version," which was released to radio; the main difference I can discern is that the "Single Version" has the vocals and drums higher in the mix, which is a good choice on both counts. The "Single Version" represents the song on the playlist because I think it is their greatest studio track. (#1 is ranked where it is because of what the band did with it live.)

As befitting its status as the closest thing Fanny has to a signature song, Charity Ball closed the sets of their reunion shows. Given the state of Jean Millington's health, that likely means it is the last song the band will ever perform.

#2 - Clearest Blue

Producer - Chvrches
Writer - Chvrches
Album - Every Open Eye
Year - 2015
Notes - The first two minutes of this song are so beautiful as Laurens voice tweets like a bird on top of a gorgeous synth riff. Then it turns into a dance song. Thats what stopped it getting the #1 spot. Its good and all, but for once their change in direction to finish a song is a detriment. 4 minutes of what we started with and I would be in Heaven.
The New Morrissey Express called it “the album's most heart-bursting moment

Heres the guys talking about the song
While talking about the origins of the song on the Song Exploder podcast, Martin Doherty and Iain Cook explained that the trio originally intended "Clearest Blue" to be a laid back song with just two chords, but because they are notoriously bad at sticking to their own rules, they ended up with something completely divergent from those ideas. After coming up with the base sample, they bounced ideas around, with Doherty adding "nonsense vocals" to establish the basic cadences of the song. Lauren Mayberry began writing the lyrics to replace these vocals, but found herself frequently concerned that her pessimism would bleed through into the lyrics of the song in parts intended to be hopeful and optimistic. The song is typically described as building and building until it ultimately explodes at its melodic climax, but Doherty described it as more of an analytical climax, and that the vocal approach is not intended to be "super climactic, like punch[ing] the air" and that it is better described as a "moment of rest".

Last Up - Just pure brilliance from start to finish. There are 2 versions of this song and while the second version contains the best bit over and over, it lacks the build up of the original.

Sweet

#2 - Love is Like Oxygen

Single edit
Long version

Producer - Sweet
Writer - Andy Scott and Trevor Griffin
Chart Positions - UK #9, Australia #9, Germany #10, US #8
Album - Level Headed
Year - 1978
Lead Vocal - Brian Connolly
Steve Priest Vocal - Backing only

Notes - After the flop of the Off the Record LP and its singles, Lost Angels, Fever of Love, Stairway to the Stars and Funk it Up (David’s Song), and subsequent albums and singles flopping, it came as a welcome surprise for this song to pop up. It was epic in design and execution. Still has elements of the Sweet sound, but more mature and ambitious. Rest of the material on this LP didn’t come close in scale, ambition or execution. Mainly cause Connolly was a passenger at this stage.

This song was Andy Scott’s baby. He had various parts of the song in place, mainly the chorus and follow up line, but was lacking the gel to put it together. Enter his roadie, yes his roadie, Trevor Griffin. Griffin loved playing the piano in between work and Scott noticed him playing certain parts that would fit his messy song. Voila.
I didnt realise until doing this that its primarily Andy doing the chorus. Brian’s voice was shot, with his alcohol, drug and cigarette usage, let alone his throat injury, but the band were delighted that Connolly put together his best vocal in years on the verses.
The song was nominated for the prestigious Ivor Novello songwriters award.
Here’s Scott talking about the song in more detail.

Last Up - The number 1. Sweet songs are always going to come to an individual preference to decide their best. This is mine. Its electric, exciting and energetic. Brian is in his element with a brilliant vocal.

Blue October-OZ-coal makes diamonds - Live From Manchester

:2cents: The album version is a 6, on Live from Manchester It’s a 10.

Nonetheless, the studio version was released on their 2016 album, Home. This was a more positive era for Justin and the group. It’s not too deep but the guitar riffs, piano and drumbeat make up for any lack of depth and just rock.

If I'm a desert my face is the wind
I know where I'm going and I know where I've been
You're the horizon and the wide open space
And I surround you caressing your face
There's not a limit to the things that I'd do
I'd give you stars but the stars wouldn't do
You're like the lava burning buried below
An eruption but too early to show
We are islands I hear our sirens
And so we wait (wait, down, put it right in front of me)
We wait (wait, down, put it right in front of me)

With the flood comes shifting the soil
Our blood runs thicker than oil
It's like erosion cutting straight to the core
No human nature ever felt this before
And we become an unbreakable vow
I wanna hold you up, higher than most
Because it feels like flying out
We are islands I hear our sirens
And so we wait (wait, down, put it right in front of me)
We wait (wait, down, put it right in front of me)

2. I Know You're Out There Somewhere (Sur la Mer, 1988)

Looking to capitalize on the success of The Other Side of Life, the Moodies returned to the studio to make another album, and Justin Hayward returned to giving the fans what they seemed to want. Despite calling Your Wildest Dreams, a 'throwaway' song, that didn't stop him from plumbing the depths of nostalgia one more time. Interestingly, he also said of the song, "A lot of people have had that experience where they want to know what happened to the first person they ever loved. My advice to them is to not find out. My thoughts are that you can never go home; you can never really go back."

The fully synthpop album reached #38 in the U.S., and this song reached #30 on the Billboard Hot 100, #9 on the US Adult Contemporary and #2 on the US Mainstream Rock Tracks list, of which Hayward was ecstatic:

"It was such a wonderful time in our career. We had a hit record and we were on MTV and all of that stuff. It was the second time around for our career. It was particularly nice because I wasn't quite as stoned as I was the first time. I could really appreciate it. I was forty years old and it was fantastic to have a record in the singles charts again."

One other note: I found no explanation, but Ray Thomas is not credited for a single contribution of any kind on the entire album.

The Beach Boyszamboni"Caroline, No"
This heartbreaking gem serves as the closer to Pet Sounds, appropriate that it (almost) closes out the countdown. Brian at first actually recorded this without the rest of the group - on the single it's listed as "Brian Wilson," rather than "The Beach Boys." The re-released version was was recorded a half step slower and became a bit higher in pitch.

The title came from Brian's discussion with co-writer Tony Asher, whose girlfriend, Carol moved across the country to New York City. When Asher visited her, he was struck by how much she had changed - her new haircut inspired the first line in the song. Asher wrote a lyric in the song as "Carol, I Know," which Wilson interpreted as "Caroline, No," and they both agreed it was a better title.

One of the two songs on Pet Sounds with a solo vocal (Brian's), he used variety of unusual instruments here, including harpsichord, ukulele and vibraphone. Wrecking Crew stalwarts included Hal Blaine on drums, Carol Kaye on bass and Glen Campbell on guitar. Blaine created a unique percussion sound by hitting an empty, upside-down water bottle, which is what you hear at the beginning of the track. At the end of the song, closing out the album, there are sounds of a passing train and barking dogs. The train came from a sound effects reel, but the dogs (Banana and Louie) belonged to Brian. He brought them into the studio and recorded their barks - thus tying in the "Pet Sounds" concept.

As @Pip's Invitation knows, the tune got a nice shout out in Neil Young/Stephen Stills' "Long May You Run" with the lyric "maybe the Beach Boys have got you now, with those waves singing Caroline, oh Caroline, no."

Ah, crap. I must not have clicked on that link, sorry. I just switched it for that live version.

#2 - Love is Like Oxygen

Single edit
Long version
Like the earlier "Light My Fire", another song whose truncated version just doesn't do it nearly enough justice.
