Middle Aged Dummies!! Artists #1's have been posted!! (2 Viewers)

Simon & Garfunkelzamboni"Bleecker Street"
Scary bit of irony here in the first three lines as New York City is currently covered in smoke from the Canadian wildfires:

Fog's rollin' in off the East River bank
Like a shroud it covers Bleecker Street
Fills the alleys where men sleep
It's just Bleeker Street. There's no possessive here.
Agreed - I spelled it without the apostrophe above. The goon that posted the clip needs to be taken out behind the woodshed.
Let Dr. Strange do it.

Of the songs I knew (8 excluding my own), my favs are
For Those About To Rock
Showdown
Things That I Used to Do

Fav new to me in playlist order

Walk On By
Hideaway
Wheels
We'll Bring the House Down
Taken By the Hand

On the fence but intrigued to hear more
Ben Franklin's Song
Party of the First

I usually hate Daft Punk but this track was pretty good

Well, and there’s a “c” in it. Bleecker.

New-to-me groups I look forward to digging into more - Sigur Ros, Doves, Big Thief

Great start to this!

Doves were selected a few times in the UK dummies countdown (including by me), and I was surprised at how many people didn’t know their stuff and ended up liking it. I’m glad someone selected them here!
I’d never heard of Doves before the British countdown and liked Shuke’s pick Catch the Sun so much that I picked it in the alphabet draft. Today’s pick was very atmospheric, like an ‘00s iteration of a Pink Floyd or Alan Parsons Project instrumental.

I've decided to do this a little differently from the way I commented on the Dummies threads. There artists would change, and so everyone would have a decent chance of showing up. Here my known/not known ratio isn't going to change much. Instead I'm letting randomness pick my selections. 6-7 songs each day tailored so that I get to everyone (roughly?) the same number of times. We'll see if the idea lasts. But for now, brief comments in order that shuffling brought them to me:

Magnolia Mountain - Ryan Adams. Obviously I can’t be sure, but this seems like a solid introduction here. The mix of rock and country. The soft but powerful voice.

Where Is Our Love Song - Stevie Wonder. I wouldn’t have guessed this was Stevie at first. Short-ish but sweet and sentimental, as you’d expect.

Firesuite - Doves. A pit trippy, a bit experimental. For a band I haven’t heard much (outside the UK Dummies thread) from, there were some definite familiar vibes.

The Things (That) I Used to Do - Stevie Ray Vaughn. Hit a familiar song! I hadn’t thought of this one in a while though, so it was good to re-experience it.

Misery - Green Day. It took me a second, but this song quickly came flooding back to my mind. Gotta love a slow-building, gothic story song!

Anything You Want - Spoon. Came and left fairly fast (at 2:16) but left a good impression. Simple but catchy guitar groove through most of this.

The best of the rest...

31. Bleeker's Street - 🤪 Bleecker Street - So good. I love S&G.
32. Jack Of All Trades - I like this. I seem to like some of his slow story songs.
33. Strobe - Is this considered rave music? I can see people dancing to it once that beat starts.
34. Allies - I have not heard this song since the 80s. Ann has such a great voice.
35. Misery - I dig it. The first part reminds me of an Irish drinking song.
36. All I Am - This is the first AIC song that I have heard without Layne. It sounds pretty good.
37. Party of the First Part - You're teasing us for what's to come.
38. There's No Other Way - Love it.
39. We'll Bring The House Down - 🥳 They were a fun band.
40. Hornets! Hornets! - I like the guitars in this, and the sound sorta reminds me a bit of a Led Zeppelin song. The line I like the crowds at the really big shows, people touching people that they don't even know, yo reminds me of being at a concert, and my tripping friend continuously saying "I only touch people I know."
41. Iron Rooster - I like this a lot. I've always been indifferent on Grohl's vocals, but I like really like how he sounds on this song.
42. Weather Experience - I like when the storm all of a sudden hit in the song, 🌩️ and I knew at that moment why it has the song title that it does.
43. Taken By the Hand - There is some badass drumming in this. 🥁
44. O Holy Night - My favorite Christmas song. I didn't realize how good Brandi was until I saw her live at Merlefest, and she was fantastic.

There was a ton of great stuff out there today. For day 1, I thought I'd make the list based on what piqued my interest the most. It could have been a song I already knew that was great for a start to a band I've never heard of. Based on the #31s in no particular order:

Ray Charles - don't know much at all from him, but this was beautiful.
Spoon - It's a band I feel I know and like quite a bit, but never got around to a deep enough dive. Really like this tune and album
Big Thief - this one was my favorite new to me song of the day. I was getting some Phoebe Bridgers type vibes at first which is what sucked me in.
The Police - very strong unfamiliar track to start off here
Chicago - you really got my attention here. When the hardest rocking song of the day came from Chicago....
Sigur Ros - this group, man. 0 clue what they are saying, but nearly always make me tear up a bit, and this was no different. It's been a while since I listened them, so I am looking forward to this one.
Clutch - very distinct sound, and one of the bands I was most looking forward to before the songs came out.
deadmau5 - this and Big Thief were the two songs that got the instant repeat listens of the day. Maybe 7mins would be better than 10 here, but loved the vibes of this one .
Foo Fighters - yet another band I wasn't that into, appreciate and listen to more now, but still I haven't heard newer stuff or done enough of a deep dive.
ELO - This is one of the main bands in the drafts lately that have come up where I seem to really dig the songs but don't know anything else. This was one of the songs I was raving about before so of course I am in from jump here.

Great set of songs, everybody!!

Song: Magnolia Mountain
Album: Cold Roses
Artist: Ryan Adams & the Cardinals
Released: 2005

“It’s been raining that Tennesee honey so long I got too heavy to fly.”

A sad but beautiful song where Ryan stays true to his alt-country roots.
Just got home from Memphis and Ryan Adams and the Cardinals concert last night was great! Magnolia Mountain was on the set list and is personally one of my favorite. I like his solo stuff better, but nice start to what I'm sure will be a great list

I usually hate Daft Punk but this track was pretty good

And that's only number thirty-one! Imagine what comes next...

In all seriousness, I was really lamenting picking this one as the intro song because of the effects on the vocals and the slow build-up with the digitized vocals being front and center to the track, but I couldn't find the list to change it. So it stayed and I'm happy about the positive feedback so far.

Talking to Mary- Elliott Smith

It's no problem, I'll just keep quiet if it's easier for you
To make believe in then that I don't love you as much as I do

that line gets me everytime. the whole song paints a really vivid story and really gets you to buy in emotionally. the melody isn't exactly flashy or anything, but this song is a definite grabber.

This song almost didn't make the list... in fact, I had a song called "Half-Right" at 31 until the last minute. I listened to Talking to Mary again and I am now wondering why I didn't rank it much higher. I suspect I will be doing that a lot.

I'm going to dive in to everyone's songs tonight and try to do a little write up on my favorites.

Those of you upset about the lack of horns in the Chicago song today (I loved it even without them) can get your fix with tomorrow’s Sigur Ros selection.
Krista = not upset. :laugh:

Off the top of my head, four songs in my top 31 (including today's) have no horns.

You did nail it earlier. It's not that I hate horns - see, e.g., Memphis horns on Stax recordings. It's that I hate their misuse, particularly in 80s/90s stuff. Very much excited for the Chicago selections!

This was new to me - I liked it a lot.

Damon Albarn Song #31

Blur - "There's No Other Way" from Leisure (1991)

My list is in order of personal preference but the first entry just happens to be the oldest chronologically.

"There's No Other Way" was Blur's first big UK hit reaching #8 in 1991. It began as a punkish demo by the band then known as Seymour. With producer Stephen Street, the song was reworked to overdub a funky rhythm track that propels the song and captures the zeitgeist of early 90s England.

It's a solid song but it's not particularly representative of Damon Albarn's music. It sounds more like the Stone Roses with Graham Coxon's guitar sounding very much like the Roses' John Squire. Given the relative popularity of Blur and the Roses in the British countdown, some people may prefer this to some of the 30 songs to come.

It's kind of funny that Blur, who came to represent the South in the Great Britpop wars, launched their career with a song that owed so much to the Madchester sound. They'd develop their own style soon enough but this song established a beachhead for their career.

Live performance from Glastonbury 1994:

AC/DC - also my favorite song from them this round.
ELO Showdown - great song.
This Deadmau5 song was pretty fun while driving tonight. I felt like I was in a video game.
Not a big Green Day fan but today's pick was fun. Reminds me of a Ben Folds Five song but can't remember the name.

37. Party of the First Part - You're teasing us for what's to come.

i believe somebody's cracked the case here, well done 👏

my card, pretty lady ...

for such a supposed dark band, they did have a great appreciation of the absurd, and had zero effs to give about indulging themselves thusly.

the audio track to this one were boosted from a late 70s cartoon "The Devil and Daniel Mouse" ... wherein the female "lead" falls prey to a nefarious musical impresario sort - Beel .Z. Bub, himself.

they found it to be totally ridiculous, and Haskins/J crafted the accompanying soundscape.

Murphy does duck in with a spoken "the interview circus is so absurd, and so silly" midway thru ... Pete were deep in the throes of smack at this time ... lotta sideways steps taken, as the other three stretched out more creatively - this particular platter session was one of high improvisation, it's a gloriously textured mess, and wholly emblematic of what the kids today would call a mood.

As mentioned getting through all lists is too much for me.
I will review a few i know and 1 i dont and keep a running tally to make sure everyone gets a mention at least twice
Today i will concentrate on the drafters I am most likely to mention the most due to the artists chosen.
Theres probably another dozen artists i will do more regularly than others

Queen - The Show Must Go On (snellman)
This was released after Freddie died and watching the promos videos on the last album as he was wasting away from AIDS was heartbreaking. He sounds amazingly strong here, but reading interviews the band worked around his strength each day and he was exhausted often, but the Show must go on. I love this track. Dont know if it would make my top 31 given the depth if their catalog.
I do plan on doing what I did with U2 for Queen down the line.

Bauhaus - Party of the First Part (otb Lifer)
This is definitely an intro as mrs rannous astutely pointed out. Not sure people are expecting what will follow lol

Blur - There’s No Other way (Eephus)
My love if Damon Albarn and Blur is only exceeded by Eephus. This track would nit crack my top 50, but its a great developmental track in the days artists were allowed to breathe by a major record label. It portends to a great band, but only in hindsight

Daft Punk - Robot Rock/Oh Yeah (rockaction)
These guys are one of the most important acts of the last 25 years. Visionary is thrown around like confectionary, but they really are. I do admit i have to be in the mood to listen to them sometimes, but when i am i enjoy it immensely. This track is probably spotted correctly.

Chicago - Hideaway (Pips Invitation)
If this was released in the 80s it would have got laughed at. Cetera was pigeonholed by then. This track suggests unfairly, but it became what it became. Its a great way to start a list and dispel the reputation that came their way. Having got 4 70s LPs from Chicago on the cheap recently, this doesnt come as a surprise. Not this one, but around it.

Green Day - Misery
I had not heard this. I only had a passing interest until American Idiot. Im not sure this band has received their due praise, but when yiu sing about Poo early on its hard to get past that. This track has a great feel. The beat is very russian/isreali.

Stevie Wonder - Where is Our Love Song
I havent heard this one. Might take a few more listens, but always great to hear Stevie so smooth

Snellman - 1
Otb lifer - 1
Eephus - 1
Rockaction - 1
Pips Invitation - 1
Mac32 - 1
Uruk Hai - 1

coupla/few/some quickies on my train ride, after a second pass thru ...

STRANGLERS - yeah, get used to them infectious, piledriving bass lines - and those dizzying keys ... the stuff coming up is rife with this crunching combo, no doubt.

REGINALD DWIGHT - ok, Oasis straight boosted "Don't Look Back In Anger" from this ... at least i'm saying they did - Beatle fetishists, sure ... but the pianner pounder had a say, too.

CHICAGO - wherein Kath sludges and shreds in a lo-fi setting, before lo-fi settings were so darling to the ironically facial haired. this were very nice.

BIG THIEF - i like where this are seemingly going ... i am nothing if not a sucker for rich melancholia ... wanna pour a neat stiff one. great vibe to the arrangement.

SUGAR ICELAND EXPRESS - long seen/heard them swooned over ... dunno, never took the time to give it a whirl - it's lush and dreamy - kinda.

NOT BELINDA CARLILE - same as Simey, my hands down favorite Christmas song ... handled well here, love it as the caboose.

moar ...

btw ... here are today's view from Exchange Place in Jersey City - the (in)famous Kàtyn Memorial - can actually see the skyline (Freedom Tower to the right) now ... and those are clouds clearly visible, not smoke - 75% better than yestetday.

moar train action now - happy (t)rails ...

This progression yesterday was crazy - from today's NY Times:

This opening sequence is unprecedented to my ears. Among the first 12 songs I had only heard of one of them (SRV). Once through them I had dolled out 9 hearts (plus the existing SRV). For context in past drafts I've been happy if I got through a playlist handing out 2-3 new hearts.

Modest Mouse, Dinosaur Jr, Spoon, and The Stranglers were right in my wheelhouse so those weren't big surprises. But That's All by Genesis? That wasn't expected. I generally don't care for most things Phil Collins that've hit my ears, but this cut was an easy pivot. Tough to single anyone out from this stretch (looking forward to more Big Thief and Elliott Smith) and it may have more to do with where it fell in the play list than anything, but Daft Punk's Robot Rock/Oh Yeah was the winner of scene #1. I needed a break before moving on...

Can I suggest that the playlists be posted in the OP, and just overwrite it with whatever is the latest? I find myself constantly trying to find the post that has the song listing.

When I have some free time I will do this. I can only post from my phone until I get off work.

cagoPip's InvitationHideaway

Geezer: C'mon, Oz ... it's time to wakie-wakie! (takes a stumble into the couch) Trippin' on yer bloody vodka bottles, ya wanker!

...

Geezer: Well gents -- Ozzie's totally feckn' pi-ssed -- again! Can't get his sorry arsze off the couch!

Tony: #$@%^@#! We still got another track to do! And we ain't paying for another studio day whilst Oz single-handedly keeps Smirnoff in business!

Bill: Waitaminnit boys -- listen ... (faint strain of Chicago's "Old Days" coming through the wall)

Tony: Terry and the Yanks down the hall?

Bill: Yeah ... keep listening ( 🎵🎶 ... funny faces ... full of love and laughter ... 🎶🎵 )

Geezer: D'ya think Pete would do it?

Tony: I mean, yeah, they're a different kind of band, but Pete's got real chops. And we can't wait around another day on Ozzie's sorry arsze.

<Two hours later>

Geezer: Peter -- you 're a real righteous bloke. Saved our skins today!

Peter: Glad I could help, guys.

Tony: Y'know what? Me and the boys can just fumble around a bit and put out an instrumental track to finish the album. Peter -- take today's master tape back and put it on your album.

Peter: You guys sure?

Double Agent
Double Agent by Rush is a great choice @higgins. Really glad to see this kick off with a song a bit outside the mainstream. As a huge Counterparts fan, I find Double Agent to be a tune with a driving force, great guitar work, and for those turned off by Geddy Lee's sometime shrieking approach, he certainly dials it back on this one in that regard.

"The choice between darkness and light"
