Middle Aged Dummies!! Artists #1's have been posted!! (5 Viewers)

I finally listened to the #15 playlist. Busy week and fell behind... not sure if I will be able to catch up now, but I'll try!

Excluding my own song, I already knew that I liked these songs:
  • Genesis – Turn It On Again
  • SRV – Mary Had A Little Lamb
  • Bruce – Badlands
  • Heart – What About Love?
Once I listened to it, I realized I knew and liked these songs, just didn't remember them by name:
  • Police – When The World Is Running Down, You Make The Best Of What’s Still Around
  • Kinks – Supersonic Rocket Ship – love this song!
On first listen to this playlist, these were the unfamiliar songs I liked the best:
  • Decemberists – 16 Military Wives
  • Sigur Ros – Rafstraumur
  • Taylor Swift (feat. Bon Iver) – evermore
  • Phish – What's The Use
  • Doves – Darker – love this song!
  • Spoon – The Beast and Dragon, Adored
There were plenty of other songs that I enjoyed. I think this was the best playlist yet for my taste. (y)

I'm glad we are not frowning on citing other sources for our songs, since I've been doing that throughout (but providing credit!). I have been posting information about the songs and albums as well as sources that support my ranking and thinking about my choices.

Just to clarify I have no problem with people citing other sources. I actually love it. I especially love @Anarchy99’s long posts in his Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd threads when he quotes multiple sources and reviews. That is awesome stuff.

I’m just too lazy to do much of that myself,

I’m not ashamed to google things for my songs.

Nothing shameful about that. On the other hand, it's tradition for certain people 'round here to do countdowns where they just copy and paste large swaths of the internet and pretend it's their own work. (No one in this thread.)
Oh he’s also not above writing 15 paragraphs of copied stats to prove something that you didn’t actually say wasn’t true and/or claiming he has “sources” when he’s just parroting beat writers.

Oh man, I'll cite Wiki right in my write-ups. There's absolutely no shame in looking things up. At least, I thought there wasn't. Not everybody is a walking encyclopedia.
I think I've been fairly consistent in citing sources, going so far as to include the link for anyone that wants more than a brief quote.
Simply name checking where you got something should be more than sufficient.

Oh yeah. No doubt. I wasn't accusing anybody of anything, either, in case that seemed weird. Personally, I always say something like "Per Wiki" and then I include quotation marks. I actually wasn't even remotely trying to say anything else other than I use Wikipedia and cite it.

What is everyone's view on profanity? I have a pretty good idea of who I want to do for the next list, but the earlier work especially has more profanity. I will try to find the clean versions when possible, but some songs don't have a clean version. May have to change artists if it is looked down on.

Have you listened to Green Day?

Also, we are only using links. Just do the NSFW thing. Krista drafted "Closer" in one draft. Seems profane enough for me.

I'm fine with profanity.

A lot late, but here's my write-up for my #10 (Reminder that my list isn't in ranked order. I just through it in a blender)

#10 Rock 'n' Roll Singer (High Voltage)

The High Voltage album now takes the lead in selected songs. 1976! This album is almost 50 years old! The intro is fantastic. As usual, it's obvious that it is an AC/DC tune after the first couple of notes. I don’t know how you don’t start tapping your toe or bobbing your head at the opening solo.
Bon wrote really great lyrics, something that I find missing in most of the later stuff. He’s telling a story here, and I’m all ears. Every part of this tune is great. Another under-rated gem, if you ask me.

Thursday will be another under the radar pick from an early album.

Yeah, I think we’ve all been clear that this doesn’t refer to anyone in this thread. Copying stuff and giving proper attribution is not only fine, but can be useful and enlightening.

The group I’m hoping to choose for round two tends to throw in a few bad words, so I’m definitely pro-fanity.

Bauhaus was usually hit or miss for me, most times miss because I just didn’t get Goth rock. But my college roommate was a huge fan so I heard them a LOT back in the day. Anyhow, among the few “hits” for me were “Crowds”, their cover of “Ziggy”, and “Bela Lugosi’s Dead”. Haven’t heard it for years until now.

Top-of-the-mind thoughts on a few of the 10s:

Decemberists/The Rakes Song - my love for this band keeps growing every Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday.
The Kinks/Do It Again - Hadn't heard this ages. Not sure I really knew it was the Kinks but I know I never change the station when it comes on.
Rush/The Trees - my doofus Neil Diamond-loving sophomore-year RA hated that we all listened to Rush and particularly made fun of The Trees - "I mean, how stupid is a song about Oaks and Maples?" Bob the Dragon (who wasn't really a Rush fan either) yelled back: "It's a metaphor for the entire human condition, you pinhead."
Chicago/Mississippi Delta City Blues - Funky
Ryan Adams/Oh My Sweet Carolina - My 2nd favorite Ryan Adams song
Bauhaus/Bela Lugosi's Dead - I'm dead! I'm dead! I'm dead!

Ryan Adams got the worst slot on the playlist - leading into Stevie Wonder each round.

I was sitting there listening to "Oh My Sweet Carolina". thinking "how can it get better than this?..." and then "Sir Duke" starts blasting out of my speaker.
Now, if you had taking Billy Joel we'd have needed Stevie as a palate-cleanser.
Although I am from Long Island, and do like him, he’d be way way way down on the list of artists I’d chose for this.

If you piss me off between now and then (seems easy to do nowadays) maybe he’ll move up that list.

I know it doesn't seem as popular with the group here in general, but I did wonder if this was reason people might shy away from some rap or other groups. 0 way to avoid it if I tackle my rap group down the road.

Pete Townshend may have been the first one to utter the phrase "Power Pop" ...but Todd perfected it.

get ready for some definitive Power Pop people!!!!
The sound on #10 was the sound I associated with Todd knowing 0% and based on chatter in the drafts. I've been more surprised at the power pop, honestly. (and I am guessing didn't pay enought attention when we were doing Power Pop in GP drafts).

Would be fun to have bottom five lists for our artists to call out their worst songs. Genesis has some real stinkers. Might be tough to listen through those playlists though.
Unpossible. I like every song the Kinks ever made. :oldunsure:
So your group didn’t sing a problematic song with the lead singer using a bad Mexican accent (with problematic accompanying video)? Must have just been my group.

Knew 13 of the 10's and the Taylor Swift song was already in my liked songs list.
Some new to me likes in playlist order.

Polar Opposites
The Rake's Song
Kveikur- been mostly a miss for me but this one rocks!
My Oh My
Maze- like the part from 3 minutes to about 7 minutes
Everything is New
Pick Me Up- great solo!
Here We Go Again

Foo FightersJust Win BabyStacked Actors

Having a lot of trouble keeping up over the past week!

Stacked Actors is the 4th and final song I chose from the Foos' 3rd studio album, There Is Nothing Left To Lose. The song peaked at #9 on the Billboard US Mainstream Rock chart and at #25 on the US Alternative chart.

Dave Grohl said about the song:

‘Stacked Actors’ is a response to living in Hollywood for about a year and a half, and my disdain and disgust of everything plastic and phony, which is the foundation of that city. And I just hated it. I had a lot of fun, but I had a lot of fun hating it.

I wrote 'Stacked Actors' about everything that is fake and everything that is plastic and glamorous and unreal, so if that pertains to anyone that comes to mind then there you go.

It's about having nothing better to do than trying to be other people, it really grossed me out. Actors, just in general make me ****ing sick.

Living in Hollywood always seemed transitional to me. Truth be told, I ****ing hated Hollywood, hated the whole life, hated most of the people we met. That's what I'm saying in ‘Stacked Actors’.

In 2020, Kerrang ranked the top 20 all-time Foo Fighters songs and ranked Stacked Actors #10. This is their writeup:

Having relocated to Los Angeles about a year before recording on Foos’ third album started, the lead track of that release sees the frontman raging against the countless fakes and phonies of Hollywood. Possessed of a strident swagger and more scathing sense of humour than what had come before, lines like, ‘I'm impressed, what a beautiful chest / I never meant to make a big scene’ and, ‘Yeah, but what do you do when you’re just another ageing drag queen?’ (a line Courtney Love seemed convinced was about here) bristle with provocative wit. The chorus – ‘Stack dead actors / Stacked to the rafters / Line up the bastards / All I want is the truth’ – reaffirms the band’s place as unlikely everymen amongst the ultimately bourgeois American celebrity elite.

In 2023, Consequence of Sound ranked what they characterized as all 156 Foo Fighters songs up to that point, ranking Stacked Actors #17. Here is an excerpt from their writeup:

There’s a lot to hate about Los Angeles: The glossy people and the frustrating lack of suitable public transportation could drive anyone nuts. It’s a breezy place to visit, but not exactly the breeziest place to live, and knowing that makes a song like “Stacked Actors” all the better. It’s one of the angriest songs in the Foo Fighters catalog, capturing a vicious Grohl who vents his frustrations and angst as he screams, “Line up all the bastards all I want is the truth.”

Around 2019 (2014 article was updated "4 years ago"), Spin ranked what they characterized as all 152 Foo Fighters songs up to that point, ranking Stacked Actors #20. Here is their writeup:

There Is Nothing Left to Lose is Foo Fighters’ classic-rock album, so even the grungiest track comes with guiro-groove verses a la Steely Dan’s “Do It Again.” The only thing more fun than that fuzz bass is pretending the lyrics are about perennial Grohl adversary Courtney Love — as many fans (and Courtney herself) already do.

As an aside, was doing research for who I want to pick in a potential round two of this thing while at work this morning, and wow, there's so many earlier versions of tracks that I was considering that I didn't realise were from a side project

The Sigur Ros song on list 10 rocked. I didn't think I'd ever say that about them.

They have a few that rock much harder coming up, but they're the type of song with a buildup to get there. #10 is structured more like a typical rock/pop song and kind of rocks throughout, I would agree.
I'll bet I know one of them. My 1B favorite Sigur Ros song is an iconic live performance. It's very climactic.

EDIT: Extremely climactic.

Warren was the bandleader for the Everly Brothers in the early 70s. He hired Waddy Wachtel to play guitar, the beginning of a tumultuous but productive friendship. The Everlys broke up and started solo careers, which went about as well as you would think. In 1974 Zevon went on tour with Don. Waddy was busy, so WZ hired Lindsay Buckingham to play guitar and sing Phil's parts. Lindsay was mulling over the offer from Feetwood Mac to join them on the tour. In Colorado, they went to see Stevie in Aspen on Halloween and they saw a mentally challenged man dressed as an Arab sheik listening to a transistor radio right up against his ear. This song was born from that evening and Lindsay and Stevie contributed backing vocals when it was recorded a couple of years later (when they had become big stars). Sublime.
