Thoughts? This guy was a great hitter a few years ago. Then the steroid hubbub really started and he went into a funk (not saying there was a correlation but the timing was interesting). Now he's hitting the heck out of the ball again.

Will he keep it up?

I grabbed him in a few leagues - he put up serviceable numbers last year - he is in a good situation in Boston - I would ride him out the 1st half then sell if you can - if I recall he had a great 1st half last year and then went in the tank.

Depends...when is his next "random" test? :goodposting: Seriously, I do agree that the timing was indeed odd - similar with Sosa. It seems that some of the guys who one might suspect do lousy for a couple of years, but now seem to be coming back. I cannot help but suspect that it apparently takes some time to get your body used to performing without them. What I mean is, all these guys have talent - and many of those who do/did juice were good players before they started. There is no reason to assume, necessarily that if they go off the stuff, and can avoid injury, that they wouldn't return to form at some point. In summary - I see no reason why Lowell won't be decent this year. I also think Sosa will have a decent year (prolly in the 30+ HR range).

Orrr we could take it easy on the steroid-suspector-2000 and look at his numbers recently

Strong starts.... not gonna hit 40HR... don't waste the pickup unless you're in shallow leagues

nope. you just don't see many older players improving significantly season over season. play him while he's hot, but he won't end the year on the pace he's on now.

yes, he did either start out well or have a similar stretch last year. i don't recall exactly. at the end of the year it was .285/20/80/80. expect the same this year.

Even during his best years he was always a 1st half hitter.

Check his historical splits. His MO when he was in Florida was that he would have a great first half, and then go into the tank in the second half. His numbers in Boston have been down from what they used to be, but this year is shaping up better so far. I'm riding him for now -- but I'm going to have a reserve ready for the second half, and I'll entertain trade offers as the break approaches.

Even if he's only a 1st half player that's still better than the losers that I drafted at 3rd (Ensberg and Crede). I'm going to ride him out and don't anticipate cutting him anytime soon.
