Jaguars LB Mike Peterson suffered a broken right hand Sunday.

The Associated Press reports Peterson will be "out indefinitely," but the veteran middle linebacker could also opt to wear a club for the rest of the year. Coach Jack Del Rio does anticipate him missing "at least a couple weeks." If Peterson ends up on I.R. again, it'd be his second straight season cut short due to injury. Daryl Smith would take over inside.

Seems like Smith would take over at MLB and Durant would be at WLB. I wonder if he's ready though, I could see him splitting time with.... somebody else? anybody?

They don't play a true WLB and SLB. I think I might recall the coach saying there wasn't much difference between what Peterson and Smith did in the scheme anyway. Regardless whoever takes over for Smith will have very limited production and not worth starting on a weekly basis.

being that their in the Playoff hunt... MP will take every option to miss as littl time as possible IMO. Still; Da Smith owners should have a couple of weeks of solid production.

The thing is the Jaguars remember Peterson not being able to tackle Ben Watson in the playoffs a couple of years ago when he played with a cast on. Putting Daryl Smith in the middle and playing Durant might actually be what gives the Jaguars the best chance to win.

So what should we expect from Smith in the MLB... about 4 too 6 solos a week?? I looked at his stats last yr and they were just OK.. Think after another year of experience he could do a little better?

I'm expecting Mike to miss 3-4 weeks initially.

Then be evaluated by the team and doctors.

May be able to have a cast for 2-3 weeks and see if he can go with a soft cast (less then a club) in the NFL playoffs.

Unless it's really nasty and they just IR him in the next couple days.

Interesting.... jaguars.com says Durant will likely step in at MLB, which definitely surprises me. I guess that means Durant is more valuable than Smith right now.

Daryl Smith will take over as the Jaguars' starting middle linebacker while Mike Peterson recovers from a fractured right hand.Peterson broke the hand in "several places" and is out indefinitely. Smith was a disappointing IDP while playing in the middle for Peterson last year. Rookie Justin Durant will fill in at Smith's spot on the outside.

From the offical Website

“He (Peterson) went with a club (bandage) and he wasn’t really able to function. How long will it be? We’ll have to wait and see. He’s going to need surgery,” Del Rio said of Peterson, who sustained the injury in the third quarter of the Jaguars’ 24-17 win over the visiting San Diego Chargers on Sunday.

Del Rio declined to confirm that rookie Justin Durant will replace Peterson at middle linebacker. Weakside linebacker Daryl Smith played the middle effectively last year when Peterson sustained a season-ending injury in game four.

“He’s a good player,” Del Rio said of Durant, a second-round pick from Hampton. “He’s an aggressive run and hit guy. He’s going to be a real good football player.”

Has Durant even started a Game??? I would be SHOCKed if they just throw him out there, with as little experience he has, in the most important Defensive position on the field. Its worth watching... Da Smith most likely gets another crack at it and if hes dissapoints; they put Durant in and see how he performs.

I've been hesitating here because there's be no news on where Durant has been practicing since the preseason. He's not even listed on the jags.com depth chart. There's already plenty of incorrect information coming out from the beat writers -- Smith is not a SLB, he is a ROLB.

Smith moved into the middle last year, but the Jags had no other MLB-like option then. Despite all kinds of talk that Smith was the MLB of the future, he wasn't impressive enough to force the switch (Peterson OLB, Smith MLB) that most outlets were projecting this offseason. It's entirely possible that Durant is now seen as the MLB of the future and it would not be a stretch to see a rookie thrown into the mix midseason with little experience in the middle -- it happened briefly to Freddy Keiaho last year, it has happened to Jon Beason already this year.

I think the "refusal to confirm" phrase could end up being telling. Those of you with early waiver periods might be in trouble. Hard to say what will happen. Smart money is probably on Smith taking over in the middle, but I wouldn't dismiss Durant too quickly. If we're lucky, we might get some information after Wednesday's practice.

I love Peterson but geez, he can't stay on the field.
Jaguars MLB Mike Peterson (broken right hand) will undergo surgery and be out several weeks.Coach Jack Del Rio did not say if Peterson will be placed on the I.R., only adding that he would not return to the field until he has use of his hand. Darryl Smith is likely to move to the inside with rookie LB Justin Durant taking over on the outside. The Jags should be fine for Week 12, facing a Bills running game that will likely be without Marshawn Lynch.I doubt he plays during the rest of the regular season.

FWIW, an article this morning also advances the DSmith in the middle and Durant on the outside idea. Jags still mum, though.http://www.jacksonville.com/tu-online/stor...219579874.shtml

There won't be any team confirmation. Vic Ketchman, the best Jags writer (Jaguars.com), added a brief note that said that Smith was expected to play the middle and Durant right outside backer. Given that he was the only one earlier in the week in the local media to pursue the Durant at MLB question with the team, that's probably significant. Still no way to know until the game starts, though. At this point we know what we have with Smith (questionable prior performance in the middle with a questionable matchup) and Durant is a unknown with the same questionable matchup. Looks like the smart money (Ketchman) seems to be siding with Smith, but there's probably not much upside there.

Ketchman has updated his blog with the inactives and noted the Mathis lineup change (Glenn) but hasn't said anything about the MLB spot. More speculation, but I think he'd be reporting if Durant was on the lineup sheet at MLB.

We'll see.

:sadbanana:

Any new thoughts on Peterson and IR or a return? Is he worth the bench spot still?
Haven't heard anything. If you've got the room to stash him for a very late playoff game, then I'd keep him. But he didn't perform well with a cast a couple of seasons ago (which is a contributing factor with the inactive/IR question) and I don't know if I'd be comfortable with him in a playoff matchup without seeing a good effort first. If you've got a better option available at another position (or LB) and decent depth, he's probably a safe cut. If not, hold and hope.

for those that watched the jags/durant last week-did he really play well or was it circumstance of 'running at the rookie' for the accumulation of his stats? i've got him in my lineup over a slumping thomas howard/landon johnson and want to know if i should expect about the same or temper my expectations

I didn't get to watch the game, but I believe Durant put up about 5-3 (solo/assist) which is almost identical to what D. Smith put up. He seems like he's a play maker and can cover the field pretty well. I'd be willing to bet that the more comfortable he starts to become in that system...he'll start stealing stats from D. Smith.
