Mike Singletary - Interesting Coaching Methods (1 Viewer)

"Mike Singletary lost his debut as 49ers head coach, getting waxed by a Seattle team that entered the game with only one victory. Yet Singletary's post-game rant and his decision to send Vernon Davis to the showers was cheered from coast to coast, resonating with a nation of football fans tired of all the thugs, punks and bonus-baby divas in the NFL.

The whole story is even more bizarre.

At halftime of that game, Singletary called for the attention of his players. He then dropped his pants, turned around and pointed to his backside. He used this occasion and that visual to describe what happened to his team in the first half.

A NFL source inside the room confirmed the story with my radio partner, XTRA 910 football guru Mike Jurecki, and added that Singletary then addressed the team for 3-4 minutes with his pants around his ankles.

The 49ers trailed 20-3 at halftime. They would lose the game, 34-13.

So, the question in San Francisco becomes this: Does Samurai Mike's legendary intensity rally a football team or does the Crazy Man Act alienate a football team?

After all, old school only goes so far in the new world, especially with today's breed of pampered players."

Kind of funny. Though interesting to hear his no-BS stance on players. He's been interviewing for years for a HC job, always thought he'd be a hard nosed coach. Never thought this.

edit: lol then he's gotta answer this question http://www.sportaphile.com/2008/10/27/vide...bill-walsh-wow/

Perhaps it's motivational lol.

I know if I had to face his umm Johnson for poor play I might try to do better.

I find this story very hard to believe. If it's true then Mike has no business being a coach. The fact that this isn't everywhere tells me the story is suspect.

Singeltery might be a media darling, but he'll be about as good of a coach as Herm Edwards. I agree that he will be a much better college coach than pro. Emotion burns off real quick. Intelligence & gameplanning are what wins in the NFL.

I guess the story is true, Singletary dropped trou

Singletary dropped pants at halftime

Nancy Gay, Chronicle Staff Writer

(10-30) 22:40 PDT -- Mike Singletary's motivational message to the 49ers on Sunday in his inaugural game as head coach also included a visual aid.

When his team hit the Candlestick Park locker room at halftime trailing the Seahawks 20-3, Singletary called everyone to attention, dropped his pants and pointed to his rear end, to fully illustrate what the coach thought of his players' performance.

According to a report that first aired on Phoenix-area radio XTRA-910, Singletary then berated the team for three to four minutes with his pants around his ankles.

Singletary did not deny the stunt, which clearly didn't work: The 49ers lost, 34-13.

"I used my pants to illustrate that we were getting our tails whipped on Sunday and how humiliating that should feel for all of us," Singletary confirmed in a blog post on the 49ers' Web site. "I needed to do something to dramatize my point; there were other ways I could have done it, but I think this got the message across.

"I am excited about having the team back at practice on Monday so we can get back to work."

Despite his 0-1 record as the 49ers' interim coach, Singletary has gained fame for publicly ordering a defiant Vernon Davis off the field and sending him to the showers after the tight end committed a fourth-quarter personal foul. After the game, Singletary's fiery analysis and rant has become an Internet hit.

A 49ers spokesman clarified how far Singletary actually went with the halftime show, confirming the coach kept his boxers on during the demonstration.

Lol at all the people that kept saying how they loved Singletary and that he was some kind of great motivator. The guy is an emotional loon. He's not fit to be an NFL coach. No way does he keep the job very long. My bet is that he gets another year after this year, the Niners will STILL be awful, he'll do a few more things like this that will embarass the organization and he'll get fired at the end of next year.

Well, it did look like the 49'ers were stepping all over their Richards during the 2nd half, so maybe Mike's coaching is already being taken to heart.

My view: Antics like this are not a good way to get a long term head coaching job. That is just not acceptable behavior from a head coach. I will be shocked if he ever gets a long term head coaching position.

I highly doubt that Singletary keeps the job next year.

Holmgren has just bought his second house in the bay area, and is not going to be coaching Seattle next year. I really hope he takes the job next year and they fire both Singletary and McCloughan.

The bottom line is that if you want to be a winning team you gotta be willing to go in the kitchen and cook some potatoes.

Well he DOES coach San Francisco...
A shot at the large contingency of gays and lesbians living in SF? If so, this is more offensive than funny. Things like this may seem innocent but they perpetuate stereotypes.Back to football, I think Mike is an all-time player but I think it was a bit much. he did everything short of pulling the rabbit out of his hat his first game. He wanted to make/leave an impression, and he did that. Whether than translates to the field, who knows. I love Singletary, but his team was awful week one under his reign.

You're making the world a better place, MC, one oversensitive reaction and lecture at a time.

All this in his first game  Glad he got the job, there's going to be some interesting sound bytes this year.

One thing is for sure , he wont be the head coach next season in SF and anywhere else in the NFL.

Stupidities like that just killed any future he would have as a head coach.

It does nt work like that anymore , you have to adjust to the new reality of the NFL and he seemed to have forgotten that.

Nothing positive is gonna happen for the 49ers until the Yorks are removed as owners. Once that happens the niners may stand a chance. The Yorks have ruined this team.
Amen.Having the Yorks on one side of the Bay and Crazy Al on the other, we in the Bay Area really have a lot to look forward to in the fall these days.Go Rai... Go Fortyni... uh, Go Sharks!

Obviously, I wasn't there... but as I play the locker room scenario in my mind (NOT a pretty picture, btw), I don't think Singletary was mooning his players as much as he was saying, "look guys - we're taking it in the ### right now."

One of two things happened last weekend. Either we viewed a glimpse of Singletary the Lunatic, or Singletary the legendary coach.

Too early to say at this point. I'm hoping for the legend, but a decade of 'Niner letdown has me fearing we'll see the lunatic instead.

i can't let my wife find out about this, this would just add ammunition to her arguement that football is gay

Really? You don't think it's a whole lot more likely that Singletary's a mediocre coach like most people than a legendary head coach? At this point I'd say 70% average coach, 25% crazy lunatic, 5% all time legend.

You know it. I hope Singeltary does well, it's taken him a while to get something like this.
