Mike Tomlin's Press Conference (1 Viewer)

Injuries:

TE Matt Spaeth (hip) will be limited in practice but should be okay for Sunday's game against the Chargers.

C Justin Hartwig (ankle) may be limited in practice but should be okay for the game.

RB Willie Parker (turf toe) will be limited in practice this week. Tomlin didn't seem overly concerned but unlike Spaeth and Hartwig did not say that he would be okay for the game.

FB Frank Summers was inactive last week but has come down with a back injury. Tomlin described it as a "mystery injury".

TE/FB David Johnson (high ankle sprain) could be out a number of weeks, not sure yet. Definitely listed as questionable and it is possible they could bring someone in to block (Carey Davis perhaps?)

S Troy Polamalu is making progress and Tomlin has been "hearing good things".

Other notes:

Tomlin said that Mendenhall is not in the doghouse because he has no doghouse. He said Mendenhall "lacked detail in his preparation last week", Tomlin took action by not giving him offensive snaps and he is now done with it. Tomlin said this is a new week and he is not carrying any baggage. If Mendenhall practices well he will have opportunities this week.

Tomlin said that Sweed is not catching the ball when it is thrown deep and he has now developed a history of it and needs to shake it off quick.

He said that when and IF Sweed gets another opportunity he better make the catch. When asked if he was worried that Limas might not be able to shake it off he bluntly said "yes".

Tomlin said that this game has a division-feel because this will be the 3rd time they've played the Chargers in the past 10 months. When asked how they will prepare for Sproles he said they use Stefan Logan on the scout team because they are similar in size.

Sad fact of the week:

The Steelers defense has given up 41 pts & over 500 yards in the 4th quarter in the first three games of the 2009 season.

Is Mike Wallace the #3 now, or is it still up in the air between him and Sweed? Sweed dropped a nice TD pass in the Bengals game, and I'm sure that doesn't sit well with Tomlin.

Tomlin strongly hinted that Sweed will be benched in favor of activating McDonald.

:goodposting: Tomlin definitely emphasized the "IF Sweed gets another opportunity" he better make the catch.I think it is safe to say that Wallace is the clear #3 WR.

I thought the most interesting part of Tomlin's press conference came when he was asked if this meant that Shaun McDonald might replace Sweed on the active gameday roster, Tomlin said, "Absolutely."

National Football Post reporting the Steelers have resigned Carey Davis.

That didn't take long. When I heard about David Johnson going down and Summers being hurt I knew they would be giving him a call.As much as I hate to say it I am glad he is back. Frank the Tank has been really bad and Ramon Foster certainly wasn't the answer.

Just keep him away from kick-offs and dump-offs.

once again the shark play is mewelde moore.................like the shark play was getting tashard choice.......since neither barber or jones can every stay healthy....both moore and choice will produce when given the chance

Weird year. Maybe it's just been a fluke or a scheme thing. But it sure feels like the defense is getting old in a hurry. I can see how a team as talented as AZ successfully attacked us, but that shredding just before the first half of the TEN game ended really seemed to start a trend. Maybe the defense is getting gassed by the 4th? I dunno. Just speculating.

There has been speculation that Tomlin might have taken it too easy on the team during training camp (the media called it Camp Cupcake). Or it could be age creeping up on the D-line and ILB James Farrior (the rest of the LBs and secondary is fairly young). They also really miss Polamalu.

If you could just share with me who is going to be injured this week, I'd greatly appreciate it.

I go with Polamalu...he's a guy that can't be replaced..they were in two close games and lost them in the final few seconds. they could easily be 3-0.

:goodposting: I agree here, but the issues are many. Holmes hands, run blocking, Sweeds hands, Pass coverage, getting to the QB, play calling, short yardage and red zone O...

The three major problems I see -

Holmes drops/mistakes - drops in Chi game as costly as Reed's bad performance

Woodley 1 tackle, no sacks - no idea why

and Troy being out.

Secondary problems but still a valid concern -

OL run blocking -looks like no improvement over last year but the pass blocking does looked somewhat better

On the plus side -

Return game greatly upgraded

Wallace much better than expected - upgrade over Nate Washington

Schedule still looks like a 11-5 or 12-4 team

Too soon to tell -

Defense - just missing Troy or is age on DL starting to show

Mendenhall
