Miles Austin may be losing ground... (1 Viewer)

These blurbs came across recently.

Since Austin seems to be on everyone's sneaky list, I thought it might deserve it's own thread instead of the ole catch-all "sleeper WR's" threads.

(FFChamps) It looks like the training camp battle for the No. 2 wide receiver job in Dallas may already be over, and it's kind of an upset. Patrick Crayton, not Miles Austin, will be the one starting opposite Roy Williams, according to wide receivers coach Ray Sherman. "Patrick is the guy right now," Sherman told the Dallas Morning News. "Patrick is having a very good camp, and I think the guys are really in tune."

Analysis: Austin is the favorite of owner Jerry Jones, who compares Miles to Terrell Owens (on the field). Therefore, Crayton's grip on the starting gig may not be a firm one. For now, however, we have to assume that Crayton will be the third receiver (behind Jason Witten and Williams) in terms of looks.

(KFFL) Tim MacMahon, of The Dallas Morning News, reports Dallas Cowboys wide receivers coach Ray Sherman doesn't believe there is any competition for the team's No. 2 receiver job. He believes it is owned by Patrick Crayton. "Patrick is the guy right now," Sherman said. "Patrick is having a very good camp, and I think the guys are really in tune. They don't care about who starts." Having Crayton as the No. 2 isn't a knock on WR Miles Austin, who is having a strong training camp. Sherman just believes the more experienced and consistent Crayton has earned the right to start.

the only receiver that will live up to their expectations in Dallas is Witten. All others will disappoint.

I think the WR2 spot will be a rotation of sorts until someone hammers it down. Crayton has dropped a lot of balls the past 2 seasons at very inopportune times...there was one he dropped 2 seasons ago against the Bears IIRC that was something you might see a pop warner kid miss but even that might be a stretch.

I think Austin will not start right away but he will get worked into the game plenty and no one ever covers the guy so I expect a handful of big plays and at least 2-3 really big games from Mr Miles.

Crayton is really best in the slot IMHO.

It's not so much as Austin having lost ground as it is the ground that Crayton has gained. Crayton has put in a great deal of work this offseason in anticipation of the competition he would be facing. Not only that, but it seems he has been the forgotten man with all of the press covering and hovering over Roy Williams and Miles Austin. He took notice and the work he has put in has shown on the field since OTAs.

This season could play out in any number of ways. Crayton may very well begin the season as the starter, but that doesn't mean he will finish the season as the starter. For another, as many continue to underestimate him, he may very well turn out to be a player that helps put you OUT of the playoffs come December by overlooking him in the draft and letting him fall to a counterpart. I'd be careful to not let him fall too far.

I don't expect him to do anything really, but curious if there's been any news whatsoever on Jesse Holley (the winner of Michael Irvin's show 4th and Long) ?

I actually listen to the ticket (dallas radio sports talk) at work when I can and they were talking about him yesterday.. Crowd cheers everytime he catches a pass or makes a play. Other than that they didnt talk about him much. (or least when Ive tuned in)

They should Throw Bennett out there at TE2 and run many run friendly sets while passing -- Bennett is a hell of a weapon if actually used.

Hasn't Crayton always been great in preseason but then falls apart in the regular season? I seem to remember a bunch of hype last TC and preseason. I could be wrong...

Hurd looks good to me.

Austin may be 4th in the (WR) pecking order when all is said and done.

i had heard similar info....hurd was the darling of camp and that he was earning the #2 spot ahead of crayton and austin...

i thought earlier that austin was more talented, reportedly well liked by jones, had been explosive in limited opps & crayton might be better fit in slot, so possibly austin would start on outside...

probably crayton is a more polished route runner, & maybe more adept at working the inside of the field (even when lining up on the outside)... while crayton is the best they have in the slot, he can slide there on 3rd down when austin or hurd comes in on 3rd down, obvious passing, 3 WR situations... though it also sounds like they may use a 2nd TE instead of 3rd WR at times... that could really limit the ceiling of the WR3... & if the two TE alignment becomes more of a base set, even the upside of the WR2...

if bennett (martellus) sees a lot of time, it would be hard to envision the upside of austin as the WR3 even being that of chris henry a few years ago, when he got 8 TDs on limited catches... with the caveat... unless there is an injury to williams or crayton (but a maybe self-cancelling caveat is that austin himself had trouble staying healthy last year)...

Anyone dropping Austin for other options now that he lost the job to Crayton?
Personally, I don't think Austin or Hurd are draftable at this point. I would only consider them if the roster sizes were large in my league.
this is my thinking as well...

Crayton is not going to be an NFL star , he does a lot of stuff just "ok", and is not an explosive player at all.Reminds me of Todd Pinkston.

In two WR sets- It will be Williams and Crayton outside. In three WR sets- It will Williams and Hurd/Austin (They might see equal time, unless one emerges as the year goes on) and Crayton in the slot.

The Cowboys will run a base offense of TE sets, meaning not much 3 WR sets. Bennett is the real deal and WILL be the biggest value at TE this year in FF. I would not be surprised by 500 yards and 7 TD's. This leaves very little for the rest. Watch Austin and Hurd on the waivers and be ready if one emerges, but don't draft either of them.

Austin is the most explosive wr the cowboys have. Hurd is a hard worker and crayton is a #3 wr.
"Explosive". Potentially yes. However, he has questionable hands, runs average routes (Except the go route) and is often injured. He is anything but a sure thing. He is a pure flier pick....imo and this is coming from a die hard Cowboys fan.If you guys do one thing in your draft this year, go get Martellus Bennett late in the draft.

Even if Witten doesn't get injured? You think this guy will get enough looks as a #2 TE? I just can't ever remember a #2 TE on a team producing enough to warrant drafting.

The sound you are hearing is Miles Austin being dropped from countless FF teams across the nation.
Why didn't you post that after the week 1 game? What Cowboys WR put up big numbers week 2? Is Austin not the most explosive WR the Cowboys have anymore? Good stuff.
What is "explosive" worth if you can't find open space ?If Austin could do this he would probably have more than 1 catch per game.

pppssssssssssssssssshhhhhhhh

that's the sound of the air coming out of Austin's balloon

he just dropped TD right in both hands on a drive where he got them down the field, coulda been a turning point WOW

4 rec 71 yards...should have a TD as well.

I hope they keep feeding him the ball. I think the guy has a lot of potential.

Whooosh...whoooosh...whooooooosh...POP!That's the sound of the air re-inflating Austin's balloon so much that it explodes.10 receptions, 250 yards, 2 TDCould the 'Boys finally have found their "#1" receiver...? Williams certainly hasn't been setting the world on fire by any means (prior to his injury), opportunity knocked, and Miles answered the door...

Career day for sure, but let's not forget this was against Kansas City. I know he made his boss happy and heck even myself as a fan because going 2-3 and losing another tough game would have been tough to stomach. However, KC's pass defense is pathetic and most people had the Dallas WR1 listed as a top 10 candidate this week, they just picked the wrong one.Big game though, can't take it away from him.

...let's also not forget that the incumbent #1 wide receiver, Roy Williams faced a rather porous Kansas City defense in week 1 and managed just 3 receptions for 86 yards and a score...his best output through 4 games played this season.R. Williams (Weeks 1-4): 11 receptions, 211 yards, 1 TD

M. Austin (Week 5 ONLY): 10 receptions, 250 yards, 2 TD

Just sayin'...
