Military coup attempt in Turkey (1 Viewer)

Erdowan was trying to change the Constitution to become a dictator. He has arrested most of his critics in the press. He opposes US interests in Syria and Iraq in that he has done everything to weaken the same Kurds we are trying to strengthen. He has supported Islamism. He is opposed to the secular Turkey in the tradition of Kemal Ataturk.

And yet, it appears that we must support him because the alternatives, especially a Turkish civil war, would be worse for us.
Did not seem to stop us pretty much anywhere else in the world.

The Russians are supporting the Kurds.

We are out.

Obama has been actively disengaging us from the Mideast. See Ben Rhodes' feature in NYT Magazine for an explanation.

Obama certainly has a knack for ending up on the wrong side of history.
Again, what the heck are you guys talking about? Not only is it untrue, it has no bearing on this situation whatsoever.

And it's asinine beyond belief to support whatever side Obama supports.

It's only been a few hours. Is it possible that they were trying to figure out what was going on?
How much do you need to figure out?  Either you support the democratically elected government or you do not.  Does not take much to reach that conclusion - and the tide of the battle should have no bearing if you support the government.

Yeah if I'm Obama I want to know what's going on before I issue a statement.

What's worst for us is spending billions of tax payer dollars on a situation in the middle east that we can't solve again. I don't buy the "must support" argument at all. It's time the US said, "you know what... we don't have to do anything".

It appears that the coup is failing because the people have taken to the streets, following Erdowan's call.

Is it possible that social media has made the military coup impossible? In the past soldiers seize the TV and radio stations, government offices, airports and train stations. That was always the key to a successful coup. But now the President goes on FaceTime, the people pour out into the streets, and the whole thing falls apart. It's a fascinating demonstration of how the new technology has changed political action forever.

I get the feeling no matter what Obama did, you would have  disparaged him for it. Right?
Big fan of Obama.  Just think we backed the wrong horse tonight.

But, it did not take two hours to decide if we back democracy - it took two hours to decide if we had to back democracy because our horse failed.

This is not who gets the first post on FBG or Twitter...It may take a little time to figure out what is going on...Now, if Obama had waited 2 days to comment on it, I would agree with you...But two hours, cut him some slack

They never did with Benghazi, why should they do it here?

I am sure we still don't know whats going on.  reports of Parliament building being attacked now.

But, the underlying premise should not change based on the fog of war - we either support the government or we do not.  If we do support the government - you don't need any other information to issue a statement of support.

I just think we did not really support the government here - as long as it looked like it might fall.  I am not even suggesting that is a bad thing.

Are we arguing whether two hours for the leader of the free world to make a statement in the middle of a coup is important?     The history of the world does not play out in seconds, it plays out much longer than that.

Did they ever cut him some slack in the 8 years?
I am not criticizing Obama here - I just think we were hoping the coup would be successful (and quick).  When that turned out not to be the case - we had to issue the statement of support.  But lets not pretend we are rooting for Erdogon here.

Welcome to the Derp World Order.

That worked out so well in Iran

Funny how quickly times have changed.  Just a few years ago, the world would look for the US to show strength and see who they would support.  Now, the world looks at Russia for the same thing.

Let me guess, it's because of the US's change to the weak Obama from the legendary mighty leader, GW Bush?
