Minor League Players to Keep an Eye on (1 Viewer)

One league I play allows each team to carry 6 minor league players, and keep 3 from year to year. To qualify the Minor must have less than 50 IP or 100 AB's in the bigs. I currently have Bruan, Koshansky, Wilson, Saltamacchia and Young ( arz of) stashed away. You also don't have to activate to Majors at any point if you don't want to, but if you do, you can't go back unless they have not exceeded the Major League stats explained above.

I will have to cut a Major League Player on Sunday and pick up a minor as I just released Veal from the Cubs to speculate with Wheeler ( we only have three bench spots for Majors). That being said, anyone with any good sleepers that are not widely known. Obviously, guys like Hughes, Gordon, Bailey etc have long since been drafted.

Whatcha got? I am looking for advice and trying to stimulate some discussion.

Rotoworld also had a decent list together in the preseason of the top 100!

Who does anybody think will be the next Pujols/arod/utley etc. superstar in the making?

Adam and andrew Miller SP's for Cle and Det
Agreed. A lot of good names on flawed's list but Adam Miller needs to be toward the top of any watch list. I'll add a few of my own.Jacoby Ellsbury - OF - Boston. Only a Crisp injury away from playing CF.Adam Jones - OF - SeattleNich Adenhart - SP - Anaheim - Little early now but he's this year's Garza.Jeff Clement - C - Seattle - Grab him as Johjima insurance.Erik Aybar - SS - Anaheim - One of my favorites. Actually made the team out of spring training but get him now if you can.

Hunter Pence is silly good. SILLY GOOD I TELL YOU.
Jayson Stark agrees!
Five young players to remember

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Most of those guys with No. 94 on their backs are gone now. This isn't their time anymore.

But as the regulars gear up for the season this week, scouts are still buzzing about some of the young players whose talent exploded off the field at them this spring. We surveyed a half-dozen scouts about their new favorite phenoms. Here are five nominees whose names we heard most:

HUNTER PENCE, OF, ASTROS -- Here's a prediction for you: Pence will be back in the big leagues by Memorial Day. He hit .571 this spring, with a ridiculous .647 on-base percentage. "You watch this guy take batting practice, and it's like watching a young Frank Thomas," said one scout. "The ball just flies off his bat."

CAMERON MAYBIN, OF, TIGERS -- A dazzling athlete, Maybin only got 21 big-league at-bats this spring. But he put on quite a show, hitting .429, with a 1.425 OPS, and playing spectacular defense. And he doesn't even turn 20 until next week. "He's got serious talent," gushed one scout. "If he hits, and I bet he will, he's an off-the-board impact player," said another scout.

EVAN LONGORIA, 3B, DEVIL RAYS -- Longoria, Tampa Bay's No. 1 pick last June, only stuck around big-league camp long enough to get six at-bats. But he caught the eye of one scout who saw him last summer and jumped on the Rays early this spring. And it wasn't just his all-around tools that stuck out. Longoria also flashes a "consistency and professionalism sorely lacking from the younger players in the Rays' camp," the scout said.

BRANDON MORROW, RHP, MARINERS -- Another No. 1 pick last June, Morrow was only supposed to pass through the big-league portion of spring training -- until he unfurled this eye-popping stat line in five appearances: 7 1/3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 8 K. So he actually screws up the premise of this blog, since he's still hanging around, with a shot to make the team. "You see this guy go out there wearing No. 85, and you say, 'Who's this?'" laughed one scout. "Then the first ball out of his hands is 96 miles an hour." Morrow projects as "a quality end-of-the-game bullpen guy, or a No. 1-3 starter," the scout said. "And that ain't bad."

JEFF SAMARDZIJA, RHP, CUBS -- There were people who were wondering whether Samardzija was really worth that $10 million the Cubs laid out to keep him away from the NFL. Well, after watching him this spring (where he had a 1.80 ERA in three appearances), one scout raved: "Best arm I've seen. Ran his fastball up there in the upper 90s, with an excellent slider. He could pitch up here quick. In fact, they had to get him back to the minor leagues to keep Lou (Piniella) from taking him north."

• OTHER PLAYERS WHO GOT NOMINATED -- Billy Butler (OF-DH, Royals), Ryan Braun (3B, Brewers), Brandon Wood (3B, Angels), Nick Adenhart (RHP, Angels), Daric Barton (1B, A's), Tim Lincecum (RHP, Giants), Ross Ohlendorf (RHP, Yankees), Travis Buck (OF, A's), Erick Aybar (SS, Angels), Brent Lillibridge (SS, Braves), Reid Brignac (SS, Devil Rays), Freddie Lewis (OF, Giants), Michael Mitchell (RHP, A's), Andrew McCutchen (CF, Pirates), Adam Miller (RHP, Indians) and Andrew Miller (LHP, Tigers).

Maybin projects to be great but unless you're in a keeper league I don't consider him high on the watch lists yet. A year from now he's probably an easy #1 on the watch list.

Kyle Sleeth pitcher for Detroit is a good sleeper prospect. Coming out of college he was a stud and a top 10 prospect. He ended up having surgery and being out of the picture for a year +. But has fully recovered and had an excellent spring training. Keep an eye on this guys stats. He will be a big league pitcher soon.

add Mitch Talbot who I just read thru a no hitter for 6 last night for the D-rays

and

Devern Hansack(SP?) - K'd 10 in his first AAA start of the year a few days ago - you would have to think one more poor outing for Julian Tavarez and the kids gets a shot.

Hopefully we can keep this one alive as the official fantasy minor league thread. :kicksrock:

I have a similar setup....5 minor leaguers, keep 2 every year (and we get a bonus year after they eclipse rookie standards).

My 5 are (in a 14 team league):

Braun, Ryan J. 3B MIL

Maybin, Cameron OF DET

Niemann, Jeff SP TB

Samardzija, Jeff SP CHC

Pedroia, Dustin 2B BOS

I'm thinking Maybin and Braun are going to be my keepers after this season, with Braun a major candidate to help me next year on the cheap. It's also nice to see Stark pimp Samardzija. Kinda took him as a laugher as our last pick as my drafting partner is a big ND fan.

Cap or DRay homers....got any good info on Niemann?

I just rostered Hansack in my deep keeper league. I think he will be the #5 SP in Boston before long. He pitched 5 innings of no hit ball against the O's late last Sept before the game was called due to rain. He is a bit old (29) but could be useful in deeper leagues especially his first time thru when the hitters don't have the book on him yet.

At least 5 of these guys have been called up so far.

What pitchers currently in AAA or AA have a good chance at making an impact this year?

Alot of the bigger name arms are already rostered in my league (ie Slowey, Gallardo, Hurley, Bucholtz, etc), but what about these guys:

Jason Hammel TB

Mitch Talbot TB

Chris Mason TB

Josh Banks TOR

John Van Benschoten PIT

Bryan Bullington PIT

Aaron Thompson FLA

Matt Albers HOU (he's back in AAA)

I'd grab Hammel if you have room.

Andrew Miller is being called up from double A by the Tigers and will start Sunday against the Mets. He was dominant in double A, 30 IP, 22 H, 2 ER, 5 BB, 24 K's, 0.88 ERA.

Reading between the lines (Leyland didn't answer questions), it appears Miller may be here to stay unless he bombs out in his upcoming 2 starts.

All of you fantasy players better be jumping all over this guy if he is available, especially in dynasty leagues.
