Reading that there were multiple pregnancies, regular beatings, and miscarriages. Also, there's "disturbed dirt" in the backyard. This is pretty horrible.
Oh man..

Oh man..
I read the girls were kept separated and tied up. Bondage equipment and chains in the basement. And, yes, multiple pregnancies and miscarriages from malnutrition.

Those poor girls.. heart breaking.

Confession time: The first time I saw the title of this thread I thought it said "Missy Cleveland [teens] Found".

You old dudes will know what I'm talking about.

LWOP is better for all parties. No costly, lengthy appeals, a chance of a very gruesome demise behind bars, or lock them up in solitary confinement which may be worse than death imo.

This Tsnarev kid is going to go to bombers rows for maybe 60 years. That is pure hell. These guys are looking at 30 years more tops.
And Bernie Madoff gets 150 years and he didn't physically touch a single person. Seems out of proportion to me. If Madoff can get 150 years, so should these brothers AND the Tsnarev kid.
I think he meant these guys will be dead in 30 years. I'm sure the main guy especially will end up with 10-consecutive life sentences or something like that. These guys will never see freedom again after they're incarcerated.
sounds like someone needs to watch ConAir

All sorts of background for Amanda and Gina but nothing from anyone on Michelle Knight? Any family around?

She was there the longest I think--at least the news say all three are ok according to hospital reports.
She was assumed to have run away. Her kid had been taken from her custody recently, and the police and investigators concluded that she just took off.

yes. i meant that they would die in 30 years. Accounts have their age at near 60.

LOL at all the "glad they're okay" sentiments. Surely, they're fit as fiddles.
 When are you ever not a jerk?
These girls have been raped and beaten for ten years. They're not okay.
Seriously, stop digging. People are glad they are alive. I don't think anyone thinks they are really OK.
Seriously?
Or don't and keep looking like a pedantic twit which is really Christo shtick.

Here, I'll do AJ a favor and break in down in terms even he can understand:

Many women and girls are kidnapped - some, if not most - are sold as sex slaves

Many women are never seen or heard from again.

These three women were found alive - albeit malnourished - and from the one photo I saw, smiling and glad to be alive and free.

We as a society rejoice because so few are found and are glad these ladies can be back with their families again.

Is that simple enough for you?

According to the CNN article, the police were called by a neighbor who heard yelling in the house. They showed up and left because no one answered the door.

Is that SOP these days? "Well, we're here for a domestic disturbance call, but no one's answering the door. That's that!"
Unless the police can hear something, there's no probable cause for them to enter.
Well, that's arguable depending on the call, but never come back? You get a call about a domestic dispute, you show up to silence, you decide you don't have probable cause to enter (which, again, is arguable) and you never return to see if there are a bunch of dead bodies in there or anything?
So apparently the call was about a child being left on the bus the defendant drove? Not really an in-home domestic dispute so sounds like there isn't much the police could have done there.

Actually Gomer, it's not that simple.

I like the word "pedantic" very much even though I had to look it up. And I really like the simultaneous shot at two posters, an underutilized skill, even if one of the targets happens to be a close personal and very dear friend.

Yeah it really is.

There's no requirement that every person on earth needs to be 100% awesome for people to be happy about something happening. All that's required is that we're collectively better off than if the thing didn't happen. Yes, it's that simple.

Are you actually saying that they (and we by extension) are worse off than if they hadn't escaped? If not, I don't see what you're complaining about here. A good thing happened. That's plenty of reason to be happy.

It is one of those words that you don't get to use often. I tend to use a deeper vocabulary here than I can use other places. And really I like both of them although they can both be trying at times.

No, I'm saying that nobody but the girls and their families really has anything to celebrate here. Those girls are ####ed. It's a horrible, ugly situation and it will continue to be a (hopefully much less, but who knows to what degree) horrible, ugly situation for them. But it's still horrible and ugly. I just think there are some who always have to immediately spin things like this into the best possible light and that rubs me the wrong way.

Okay, I'll play. Can you name me a better outcome to a situation where innocent girls are held kidnapped for ten years? If this case all appear to be physically alive and without substantial permanent disfigurement. One actualyl broke free on essentially her own from her captors. All appear to have a grasp of time and reality and while there is certainly some mental damage to these women, it may not be as bad as it could. The suspects were arrested without incident. We got an awesome "hero."

I don't see how you cannot understand the positive sentiment in this thread and statements like "glad they're ok" unless you're being obtuse for the sake of it.

So you are also an expert in determing the state of mind of these girls and the possibilities that they can overcome this to one degree or another.

Police: Mr and Mrs. Jones? I have some news about your missing daughter.

Parents: What is it?

Police: She's dead.

Parents: Oh thank God! I thought you were going to say she was alive but severely traumatized. What a relief!

From the CNN article:

Authorities said Tuesday they had no prior indication anything suspicious was going on at the nondescript home on Seymour Avenue with a Puerto Rican flag hanging from the porch. But a few neighbors said they had called police in recent years after hearing yelling at the house and, in another incident, seeing a naked woman walking in the backyard.
I feel like after one or two of those calls, you can't really just let it go without ever talking to someone about it.

Parents: Oh thank God! I thought you were going to say she was alive but severely traumatized. What a relief!
Police: Parents, we just discovered your child was bound and tortured for ten years by a masochist.

Parents: Oh, how horrible!

Police: Well, we are returning her to you now, after ten years, and she doesn't appear to be physically disfigured and should recover from any malnourishment. You can now resume loving and caring for her.

Parents: Oh, no biggie, that's only a slight less horrible situation than she was in.
