The pet bird named Foresta had disappeared Tuesday from Tara’s home in the Elkhorn Mountains near Montana City, but it was back in her arms Wednesday after it showed up at her school about 5 air miles away in Helena.

My great uncle in NJ used to race pigeons. We were visiting him once when one of his pigeons showed up looking for its old coop. He said he hadn't seen the pigeon in several years. He assumed it died somehow but apparently just got *really* lost.

when i was a kid we had a unneutered male cat named 'blondie'. we used to hear cat fights in the alley until he ran away.

he was gone for over 7+ years and came back one day mangled and broken, to die at home.

always have your pets spayed.

The reason he was mangled and broken is he ###### hundreds, perhaps thousands of female cats. I think he died happy.

How did he know it was his?

What's it take for a pigeon to navigate its way five miles to its long-lost owner, nine minutes or something?

This is like seeing a story about "Miracle Dog Finds Way Back to Family After They Move Away Without Him," only to read it and find they moved to the house next door and Sparky waddled over when he smelled pot roast cooking..

Malaysian Airlines announced they will be installing pigeons onboard all flights.

This pigeon has never been to town before,” Atkins’ mother, Krys Holmes, said. “We got her as a baby, and she just hangs out at home.”
So I guess since it had never been there that's what makes it a story. RIF.

"5 air miles" ?
My guess is if you drive it it is more miles. Most people don't have a straight line road to the schoolhouse door.
Yes, I get all of this. But who needs to have it explicitly specified that the pigeon didn't get into a car a drive to the school?
Newspaper articles in general are written to a low reading comprehension level.
Then they should be writing things people can comprehend, not made up terms. Googling 'air miles' makes it seem like the bird cashed in some Air Canada voucher.

It was an odd use. They could have gone with as the crow flies and then all the vocabulary challenged who aren't very good with context would be fine.

If they'd just said: "As the cow flies"" it would have made it into a real story.

They have bands.

Racing pigeons are serious business. People pour huge money into it.
I spoke this weekend with a guy who raises these things professionally. He is also a federal fish and game warden who loves beer and has season tickets to the Spurs.

This made me lol.
Do you have any idea what a top pidgeon sells for? These people have way more money than they know what to do with.

Many get in excess of 100k

Top bird are in the 300k range with one hitting 400k last year.

I didn't say it wasn't true, just laughing at the notion of serious pigeon business.

It doesn't getting any more serious than with Marlo Stanfield.

it's the life he chose.

he could have stayed and led the good life: canned food, catnip, big yard next to the mountain side. but, no, he lived a life of carousing.
