Missouri football player Michael Sam is gay

Fine, bump this thread after the draft to show how coming out improved his draft position.
$100....we get an average draft projection from several sources a couple weeks prior to the draft and see where he goes. If it is +/-10 spots it is a push.
No because his coming out will be factored into what. Tell me where you think he will go now because of all the teams will be tripping over themselves to be PC enough to have the first gay player? What round to you want to bet on now?
How the heck can they factor that in? He is going to be judged by his performance in combines and he will be slotted based on his skills/performance, The projection is not going to factor in his gayness. His actual draft position will be a about 1/2 round better then scouts project..
You want to bet on a round now and put your money where your mouth is or not? If not then (please) shut the hell up.
I am not Mel Kiper, Jr. I have no idea the depth of the draft and the needs of the teams. I proposed a fair bet, take it or leave it,

Mel Kiper has him somewhere in the fourth round. If I had to place money today, I say he goes before round 4.

True, you are wrong_mx who knows damn well coming out will not make him a shoe-in 1st or 2nd round pick by teams who just want to be PC, but you won't put any money on it now.

Based on his draft projection of today somewhere in the fourth, I say he goes prior to the 4th.

That is isn't what you were saying before.

No way it hurts him. If his draft projection says 3-4th round, he will go late 2nd
If you still want to bet he goes in the 2nd, I am game. Not surprising you want to move the goalposts when you have to put your money where your mouth is.

2nd rounder for $100 like you said? A team would wants to look PC and have the first gay play should be willing to take him early, right?

its weird to me that the typically anti-gay rights posters think its to his benefit to come out. I guess that's some sort of odd progress.

I was taking a posters word that he was a third round projection. Mel Kiper an unbiased and legitimate source has him going in the 4th. If you don't want to take it, #### off #####

Probably going to hurt his draft stock
Uh no, then he can say the teams that passed on him were homophobes. As politically correct as we are this should guarantee him being the first pick in the draft now. lol

I hope this isn't going to be the insufferable Tebowites part 2

he got drafted too high because he's gay

drafted too low because he's gay

he's not getting a fair shake etc.

You need to bet post combine... That #### always shakes these projections up big time.
You need to pick 3 analysts (Kiper, McShay, & one more) take their first post combine numbers, average out the 3 and over/under... Best way to do it from a bystanders POV with no personal interest.

Make sure we don't have any Dr Gobblers in here either.

Same to you. You said this elevates his draft stock and he is worth more than if he were straight. If you still believe that, put your money up that he will be taken by the 2nd instead of ballpark of where he was thought to go before.

You say being PC drives his draft stock way up. Make the bet based on your original late 2nd prediction, or just go away.

Between that and Mel Kiper's 4th round project, it seems the consensus is about late 3rd or 4th round. The best I can do is the 75th pick or before.....

There is no room for bigotry in American sports. It takes courage to change the culture.

I think it's a shame that in 2014 this is a news story, though I understand why it is.

I think he had to get ahead of the story because it wasn't a closely kept secret. Put it to bed now and get most of the hoopla over with.

If he runs a 4.55, teams won't care if he's Liberace. If he runs a 4.85, it wouldn't matter if he had nightly romps with Taylor Swift, Brooklyn Decker and Sarah Jessica Parker.

Why would teams be tripping over themselves to draft a player 1-2 rounds ahead of where he would otherwise be drafted? Don't just say because the NFL is PC. Actually play it out for me. Your assertion is that there will be multiple teams with GMs and coaching staff that will draft a player who is inferior to a whole round or two of players on the board because the player is openly gay. What is the thinking there? Is it your contention that they'll draft an inferior player because they think that they'll sell more tickets? More merchandise?

Can someone explain why DADT isn't acceptable for the NFL? I mean it seems to be a hard hitting issue for a lot of players and I think we all know that if you have openly gay players calling attention to themselves and the lifestyle that suddenly the locker rooms will take on a different feel.

There seems to be a certain segment of the population that will not rest until they have turned the NFL inside out and abiding by the same rules we all live by at our routine daily jobs. It's a privilege to be in the NFL, very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very few men on this planet get a chance to play professional football so why do we have to go thru all this? Didnt the bucs draft a paralyzed player?

I dont find it hard to believe a team would draft him significantly earlier than he should go for the positive press.

Probably because DADT was one of the dumber laws ever. Also, DADT was still discriminatory based on sexual preference.

Because forcing people to live their lives in the closet is unfair and immoral.

This can only hurt him. He's not going to get drafted before where he would have been. Draft picks are too precious and highly drafted rookies are too expensive to think of anything other than whether the player can play.

At best he'll get drafted where he would have otherwise, but that's going to be with both an ownership that'll embrace this issue along with the surrounding fan base, and a coaching staff that doesn't mind what will inevitably be a circus. I could see a team like the Giants going for this at the ownership level, though I'm not sure how welcoming Coughlin would be.

Wouldn't the NFL trying to implement a DADT type of law also be illegal? Gays are a protected class. A workplace couldn't enforce any sort of law where only heterosexual people could talk about their significant others.

Immoral to who? And forced to live in a closet?

It's a privilege to be able to play in the NFL.

Let's assume for a second BB that the NFL does the wrong thing and the kid isn't drafted or is quietly cut during preseason. There are no new rules or laws that will be made to govern this. It still is gonna be the unspoken DADT and while it might not sit well with many including yourself, I'm not sure it would actually change anything other than some folks in the media making it a big story for a while. Now if the kid somehow makes a roster and became an impact player, obviously the stakes change at that point.

Does the NFL need to generate some kind of new rules and make it very public meaning full blown press conferences and an overhaul publicly of their policies? Do you think the NFL needs rule changes in regards to anything we're discussing in here?

I oppose the NFL implementing a formal rule that expressly prohibits known gay players from playing in the NFL. That is what DADT is and that is what you are proposing.

So everyone who is A-OK with the UNWRITTEN DADT that seems to be prevalent in the NFL is immoral? You gonna throw everyone into that category?

I'm not proposing it, it's already in place but they are never gonna write it down, that would have an army of attorneys ready to attack.

It's a privilege to be able to play in the NFL.
It's no more a privilege to work for an NFL team than it is to work at a grocery store or for a law firm.

@bigbottom For some reason I thought Windsor went further than it actually did in making sexual orientation a federally protected class.

He'll drop in the draft because certain teams are too scared, then he'll get scooped up by the Patriots or some other "progressive" team and he'll end up being the steal of the draft.
No way it hurts him. If his draft projection says 3-4th round, he will go late 2nd, The NFL is too PC now. There will be teams tripping over themselves to try to draft him. The NFL is not ready for him? Bull####.
To be that GM that put Jackie Robinson in a uniform. To make history. To create buzz. Yes, there will be gain financially and in status to be that guy. The guy will potentially have that top selling jersey.

Dude got 11.5 sacks on the field last year and was SEC defensive player of the year - I'd say he will warrant a fairly high draft pick. If you watched any Mizzou football games, the guy is seemingly everywhere. For an offensive minded team, we have produced some pretty good defensive talent. Sean Weatherspoon, Will Moore, Aldon Smith, Justin Smith, and now Michael Sam.
