Missouri football player Michael Sam is gay (2 Viewers)

Reminds me of that first girl that was admitted to the Citadel, but washed up in the first few weeks. All the plebes cheered. But in a few years another girl was admitted and did not wash out, and another...etc.

There will be an openly gay player starring in the NFL; it's only a matter of time.
No doubt about it.

But Sam didn't fail because he was "the first". He failed because A) he wasn't that good and B) He was more concerned with being a celebrity. A borderline (at best) player who is desperate to get a roster spot doesn't do Dancing with the Stars during the off-season.

One day soon, some guy who actually wants to be know as "just a football player" and not "the gay football player" (which Sam claimed when he first came out) will succeed in the league.

Honestly bro, who gives a ####? Don't ask, don't tell. It's about the play on the field.

Michael Sam embarrassed himself, period.

In both cases, Sam and Shannon Faulkner both left because they were not qualified to be there. Despite pounding down the door, claiming discrimination or whatever, when the chance arrived for them to prove they belonged, they failed. Faulkner was gone in 5 days from the Citadel, which she claims was due to death threats (which she never told anybody about, BTW).

A wrestling school near where I used to live had a saying, "If you can't hack it, 'better get your jacket." For both Sam and Faulkner, it's obvious they couldn't hack it.

Hard to believe there were people whining about this guy being drafted lower than his skillset merited.

Apparently he was lucky to get drafted at all.

Nice job of revisionism here. Go back through this thread, and you'll see that most of the whining came from people predicting he'd be drafted far too high.

He'll drop in the draft because certain teams are too scared, then he'll get scooped up by the Patriots or some other "progressive" team and he'll end up being the steal of the draft.
No way it hurts him. If his draft projection says 3-4th round, he will go late 2nd, The NFL is too PC now. There will be teams tripping over themselves to try to draft him. The NFL is not ready for him? Bull####.
Like this prediction, for instance.

He obviously wasn't a 3rd-4th round talent. His combine numbers sucked. Pass rushers are always in high demand, so if there was anything there he would've gone much earlier.

People here don't understand what the word "if" means. Sam's combine numbers dropped him from a 3-4th round projection, to a guy on the bubble. I really don't think you can reasonably make a case that Sam's gayness hurt his draft position. If anything it helped or was neutral.

How many years until that happens?

:lmao:

They were right.

Some of you folks seem awfully too happy about the fact that he is not that good at football.
I was rooting for the guy until he started making a total mockery of the process. Once the silly cake smashing happened after he was drafted, I knew he was in trouble.

What he said ("I just want to be a football player") didn't match up with what he did (cake smashing, dancing with the stars, the proposed reality show) and that's what I think most non-ignorant people have a problem with.

If he went out there and busted his ### and made the Rams roster, I'd be happy for the guy. Instead he was a publicity hound and apparently forgot the values and work ethic that made him excel in college. And washing out the way he did in the CFL I think warrants some derision. He now looks like a bit of a fraud and a joke.

Absolutely. 95% of America (including those against homosexuality) wouldn't have given two rips if he had put in the work to make himself a football player. Once it became LOOK AT ME I'M GAY!!! then he ends up getting hoisted upon his own petard.

The reaction has less to do with Sam himself and more to do with shoving it back in the faces of the people who know little about football yet insisted on calling those who disagreed with them about Sam's pro potential bigots.I wish Sam the best of luck in life and future endeavors.

Tim can hang on to this while he's licking his wounds: Brewers minor leaguer David Denson comes out.

The 20-year-old first baseman plays for the Helena Brewers in the rookie Pioneer League. Bean, Major League Baseballs first Ambassador for Inclusion, revealed he is gay after his playing career.
Countdown to Tim saying he should be in the majors in 4...3...2... :coffee:
.195/.264/.305 in A ball? As a 1B/OF? This guy sucks.
Pitchers try extra hard against him. Bigots.

I rooted for Sam, and will continue to root for gay athletes in general, because the suicide numbers among gay teens in our society continues to be high. I believe that this is in part because despite all of the barriers that homosexuality has broken through in recent years, sports has not been included, and this is important because for men, the stereotype of gay being the opposite of "macho" remains very strong. So it is going to take some prominent gay male athletes, particularly in a sport such as football, to diminish those stereotypes. Obviously Sam is not good enough to be one of these but hopefully others will come along soon.

Maybe guys like Romo have to stay in the closet to play at a competitive level?

I wish Tim had been a gay teenager.
Meaning you wish I had considered suicide, or, even better, actually done so? That's a very witty comeback on your part.
That or so you would once in your life have a damned clue as to what you're talking about before babbling on. If Lebron James, Mike Trout, and Peyton Manning all came out as gay, life as a gay teenager would still be brutal in many parts of the country. Backing gay athletes simply because they're gay is silly. You've made a fool of yourself in this thread and claimed all these reasons he were being denied an opportunity was because he's gay. Turns out he's just lousy. If he were pretty good at the combines I'm pretty sure teams would have drafted him higher. Regardless of his orientation.

Ugh. Go back to your bunker, Saddam.
Suicide isn't something to really joke about. I have zero issue owning it when I make tasteless jokes. That wasn't my intent here. Growing up as a gay teen is a really difficult thing, and for reasons that go way, way beyond us simply needing a couple superstar athletes. Unless you've been a gay teen or spent some time with them, get bent of you're going to pretend how to fix their issues.

Yep. He was an All-America, First team All SEC, and SEC Defensive player of the year. He earned that. Now he can't even hang in the CFL? That's on him. It has nothing to do with anyone else and how they feel about his sexuality.
