MixTape Draft - Back to School edition. Make your picks and post your mix! (1 Viewer)

Looks like we have a new kid in class @Dope

Rubric

Originality: 20/25   A solid mix of songs that I was really familiar with and songs that were brand new. Even some of the more familiar songs were less popular versions which was cool. The new song that actually got my attention the most was Je t'amie. Never heard of the song or artist before, that song with the crowd was awesome. I wish it was on my draft.

Quality:   20/25 This was kind of all over the map for me. The classics like Smoking in the Boys Room, Jeremy and Be True to Your School balance out some bands that I don't care for (Manson, Kiss for example).

Theme:  20/25  The theme seemed to be songs that had any kind of relation to school and school years. Summer vacation, cliques, school pride, Catholic school girls and making out, basic arithmetic and a fun anatomy song. Nothing fancy here, but all the songs made sense for the draft.

Fluency: 18/25 It was really unpredictable. At first it was bad but once I settled into the portion starting with Double Dutch, it was more unpredictable in a good way. Still plays pretty random.

Extra Credit +5  for putting Dry Bones on there. The rare song that's incredibly obvious and yet there's probably not another song taken in the whole drafted that's quite like it.

Overall: 83/100

Grade: B
I didn't know there would be grades....thanks for the write up!!!

I agree 100% with everything you felt here. I played my playlist on the car on the way home and it didnt flow at all.

Thanks for listening to Je T'aime. I'll listen to Marilyn Manson hundreds of times this year and no Manson song is important in my life as Je T'aime is. Really glad you enjoyed it. Watch the video yet? She's pretty too.

I hate that Kiss song, but I needed a geography song and my "I've been everywhere" was sniped.

Thanks for letting me fill in :thumbs up:

Some people listen to the mixes and leave comments, reviews, etc. Given the theme, I thought a rubric and grade would be appropriate. I will definitely check out the video as well, thanks for the heads up. Where did you come across that song/artist?

I couldn't even tell you how I found that. I think it might've been a random video on wimp.com?

I remember clearly where I was  in life though...not a great spot. Me and Mrs Dope had split up...I missed seeing missed Dope Jr everyday....I missed the dog...I had walled everything in and wasnt feeling anything. This video/song cracked my shell and allowed me to start healing.

Flow has always been a negative for my mixes.  I like a variety but mixing Rocky Top, grandmaster flash and Black Sabbath is tricky.

Here is my final "Senior Year" mix -

My intention is to show the songs somewhat in a chronological order from Sept to July.

i do have a "subject" oriented mix that I started coming up with 1/2 way through the draft.  I think that was where @KarmaPolice was going with the draft idea, but I realized it too late to switch, but I'll post that one when I finish it up.

Do you speak French? She has a great voice and it's very emotional but I have no idea what it's about.

With a redo I'd be more specific subject oriented.  I tend to over emphasize taking a variety of stuff I like, which ends up being a decent mix for me but with no flow or consistency.

We're not at the University of Kansas anymore. (Added two songs I needed for the mix)

Also, for those who will listen to the mix I seem to have added the wrong song for one of them but I'm keeping it cuz I kinda like this version. (See who can guess which one) :D

Ok boys and girls. Please take your seats

(Bill and Ted): Where should we take them, lolz

Im glad you two were the ones with the smart aleck remarks. I have a feeling you are going to like where we are going this semester. Our course is going to be led by Iron Maiden

(Bill and Ted): Iron maiden, EXCELLENT 1!1!1!1!1!1!

Ahhhhh, it's time to relax, And you know what that means, A glass of wine, your favourite easy chair,
And of course this spotify mix playing and your home stereo, smart phone, desktop or streaming through your bluetooth speakers.

So go on, indulge yourself, That's right, kick off your shoes, put your feet up,
Lean back and just enjoy the melodies.
After all, music soothes even the savage beasts.

@Ilov80s Enjoy your first time listening to Maiden.

Bogus!

Do you speak French? She has a great voice and it's very emotional but I have no idea what it's about.
It's a love song- title is "I love you". She says something about loving you like a movie star, like a king, like a solider, told you my secrets, etc. Not sure if it's romantic love or about a family member. She says something about being a little girl too.

With English subtitles

The translation is slightly off...the crowd in singing "On T'aime" (WE love you) instead of Je T'aime (I love you)

I don't speak french but it doesn't matter. BTW...the bit at 47 or 48 seconds where she just goes like PFFT and must be thinking Are You Fn kidding me right now...there is som much to unpack in this 5 minutes I could go on for an hour...I just absolutely love this

I took English Lit :nerd: as part of my joint major (with business, thankfully), it would be interesting to do a mix of English nerdery but maybe that's just because my Spotify just shuffled to a Decemberists song...

And to close out the semester, we will take a field trip over to the School of Rock where Jack Black, Kyle Gass and Dave Grohl will give us a lesson on how to rock your ####### socks off.

Rock Your Socks - Tenacious D

One, two, three, four, five
6-6-6

It doesn't matter if it is good
It only matters if it rocks
The main thing that we do
Is to rock your socks off
There's no such thing as a rock prodigy
Cause rock-n-roll is bogus
Right KG? Right
Only thing that really matters
Is a classical sauce
And that's why me and KG
Are classically trained
To rock your ####in' socks off
Give 'em a taste KG
(Okay)

That is Bach
And it rocks
It's a rock block of Bach
That he learned in the school
Called the school of hard knocks

Give it up for KG, give it up for me
Give it up for KG, give it up for me
Give it up for rock, give it up for blues
Give it up for everything that is not to lose
Now rock your socks off woman
We'll rock your #### up y'all
Give it up children now to freak your #### out
All right

Now I know what a lot of you are sayin'
"I just figured out what I'm gonna do
With the rest of my days
I'm gonna get me an oversized guitar
Gain forty pounds
And be the next D!"
Well, I got sour news for you Jack
It ain't that easy
For instance
Are you willing to make the commitment
To wakin' up at the crack a' noon
For deep-knee rock squats
Seven or eight at a time
In a row
How 'bout
Are you willing to make the commitment
To rock hard tasty abs
Washer board style
Glistening in the sun
How 'bout
Are you willin' to make the commitment
Wakin' up, goin'
"Okay, it's gig time
What T-shirt am I gonna wear?
Can't decide, can't decide
Brain aneurysm!"
We've been through so much bull####
Just to be here tonight
To rock your ####in' socks off
And all we ask in return is so precious little
All we're askin' you to do
Is drop trou'
And squeeze out
A Cleveland Steamer
On my chest
(Oh..)
Two, three, four

Give it up for KG, give it up for me
Give it up for KG, give it up for me
Give it up for rock, give it up for blues
Give it up for everything that is not to lose
Now rock your socks off woman
We'll rock your #### up y'all
Give it up children, won't you freak your #### out
Ah-all right

It was funny searching for that song on YouTube or googling the lyrics. You have to use violent photography or violent poronography in the search.

I think this may need a trigger warning.

Sorry I haven't gotten to any mixes. I'm really busy, a little burnt out, and will be through the weekend until Sunday. Then I'll dive back in.

Head of the class @Northern Voice

Rubric

Originality: 25/25  I guess I don't listen to much Canadian music. Other than the Great Lakes Swimmer song, I don't think I had ever heard a single song.

Quality:   25/25 Maybe I should listen to more Canadian music, I liked every single song.  I'd choose a stand out, but it was nearly every song.

Theme:  25/25 It felt very Canadian and it had geography all over it but wasn't ever cheesy or forced.

Fluency: 25/25 Flowed like the the St. Johns River

Overall: 100/100

Grade: A+

For what it's worth, I think this is probably the best mix I've made in any of the drafts. The Canadian Geography theme lent itself pretty well to picking good songs that I knew would be new to most people. I also took a cue from @Eephus and was more aware of how the songs flowed, getting some women in there, etc...

Could be the beer and broccoli but it flowed perfect without sanding  samey.

I am not sure how many long reviews I am going to do, but I listened to this one last night and loved it.  Agree with 80s 100% in that it flowed perfectly.  LOVED the first song and it really gave the impression that you are popping this in your car for a road trip.  I think there might have been a song or two that was a little too country-ish, but really liked this mix too.  I think this might have been a mix that was 100% new songs for me too.

Ed You Kay Shun

Rather than a subject matter mix, I attempted to draft an education themed mix progressing from grade school through college graduation, and other than the first song, and to some degree the ending, from artists who apparently didn't love their experience.

Here's my makeup pick since I'm pissed I can't find Killing an Arab on Spotify

Yo Mama University

Course:  Mass Media 140

Course Title:  Moving in Stereo

Instructor:  The Cars

Course Description:  This course has something to do with using stereo phonics to their full potential in media, but it's really just an excuse for Yo Mama to link what is possibly the best music video in the history of YouTube.

Instructor Commentary:  "It's so easy to fool with the sound."

I'll try to get my updated Spotify playlist organized and linked at some point today/tonight.

Seriously, I don't know how that video only has 148k views. I've watched it like 5 times this morning already.

ETA: disappointingly SFW though.
