Looking for something to put in our driveway so I can play with my son. Don't want to spend more than a few hundred. Anything I need to know about these? What is a good capacity to fill with water/sand to ensure it's stable. I've driven by some before that had a bunch of sandbags piled on the base. I don't want to look like a hillbilly.

shuke is in the midwest and lived in Indiana at one point. If you don't go the permanent route, you might as well not have one.

Filled it with sand and placed some flat stones underneath to make it lie flat. It is adjustable, which was good for the curb. There are also two small wheels at one end of the base which allows for relocation.

Kids love it. Having it on the road allows for other kids to use it without them being in your driveway. They just get pissed when someone parks underneath it. Also having it in the road means you don't get bothered by the 'Dad can you move the car/van' pestering.

I wouldn't fill the base with water unless you live in a non-freezing winter area.

I bought that exact one 1 year ago. It lasted about 6 months. The backboard was flimsy and cracked and subsequently fell apart. The base also had a hairline crack in it and it wouldn't hold water, which we figured out when the thing got too top-heavy and fell over and bent the rim.

Went back and got the next best one just a couple months ago, which is more like the one shuke posted, with a clear backboard and adjustable height control. It's much sturdier (and better quality backboard material) than the one Mr. E posted.

Yeah it seems OK, I have 10-12 y.o. kids throwing basketballs at it. They can't dunk!

At most stores in this area, the one with the straight pole with no height adjustment mechanism, plus the flimsy gray backboard, is ~$85. The adjustable model with the better backboard is ~$150-200.

Had one in our six stall garage growing up. The W trusses were a little low, always shot line drive jumpers Lloyd Free style. Good move putting it outside where you can use it 5-6 months out of the year.

They ordered it from Amazon, so they didn't have to bring it down from Boston. Tough for 70+ y.o. grandparents to put in their car!!

You may as well use the milk crate nailed to a telephone pole suggested earlier. Those poly backboards are horrible.
