Mock Drafts to be Mocked! (1 Viewer)

Anyone seen this yet? Awesome breakdown of last year's early expert mocks:

http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/sports/eagles/That-mock-draft-you-read-today-was-insanely-inaccurate.html

Congratulations, Mel Kiper, you're at the top of the Delta pledge class.
I think the biggest miss last year was on EJ manuel. Peter Schager was the mocker that had Manuel as a 1st round pick in his early mocks. Since Kiper and McShay don't do mocks much beyond the 1st round it is impossible to say how inaccurate they were on him. All I know is about 3 weeks prior to the draft Kiper and McShay did not have Manuel ranked in their top 5 QBs. Mayock initally did not have him in the top 5 either but slowly moved him up as the draft drew nearer.

So when I hear Kiper and Mcshay talk about the QBs in this draft class I do not take them too seriously.

The point of the article was not to point and bash Kiper. Come on. That wasn't his final mock draft and it wasn't the final mock drafts of any of the people listed and those guys intentionally put out names that they know won't go there in early mock drafts to drive people off of the scent so that when they put out their final mock draft anyone who only copies and pastes together names from mock drafts will put out innacuate mocks.

The point is that early mock drafts are horribly inaccurate which shouldn't suprise anyone here.

The level of inaccuracy in their February 2013 mock drafts was staggering. That's not to goof on those guys, who are all knowledgeable. But they're predicting without knowing how free agency will play out, or how well players will perform at the Combine.
The one guy who was very accurate was Rick Gosselin because he had sources all around the league and had cultivated long-standing sources on college campus's so he had inside information from scouts and from NFL front offices in addition to doing leg work but unfortunately Rick stopped doing that last year.

I like looking over the top-100 and top-50 lists to try and figure out the value of the players.

Trying to do a mock draft if tough so I'm not going to pile-on anyone with the balls to put out early mock drafts when we all know they are horribly inaccurate.

The way EJ Manuel played... Not sure a first rounder was the spot to take him.
way too early to tell. I remember thinking Manuel looked like he could be their future franchise QB. He actually had one of the best games against Carolina.

He didn't reflect that later in the season, but few rookie QBs do. And IIRC, Manuel was seen as a project.

Is there a site that shows early mocks vs. the NFL draft, as far as future success in the NFL?

I started hearing buzz last year that Kiper basically started taking money from agents to promote their player. So Kiper would start rating guys higher to get people (GMs/coaches) to start buying into the hype.

Not sure how true that is...just saying I heard it. Pretty sure it was in these boards. I don't think that is too hard to believe. People like geting paid.

I think it is fun to read mock drafts, but I don't judge the people that do them. It's entertaining...why bash someone? If someone ended up being accurate, then give them some kuddos. If they were totally off the grid...so what.

As far as Manuel goes...I never thought he had what it takes to be anything more than a middling NFL QB at best. People were saying how he was a runner and was fast...uh, not sure what games they were watching. Dude hardly ever ran. And he's not fast. He was an average to slightly above average college QB on a team full of studs. I don't think it will be long before Buffalo either replaces him or deals him off to some one else. And I'm a Seminoles fan. He drove me crazy with his decision making. Just didn't seem like a smart QB to me. Enter Jameis Winston and look what happens.

Manuel seemed to rise up in the mock drafts after the Combine.

I think my question for the professionals is does this really happen on NFL team draft boards? Or is it just in draftnik perception of draft boards?

Do you think people in the NFL draft rooms care about the talking heads opinion at all? No wonder they are wrong half the time they have no clue whats going on in anyones draft room.

If the goal is to convince GMs, that seems like a waste of money. If it's to get fans attention for marketing later, it might have some merit.

Heard today on the radio Kiper gave Seattle a c- draft grade for the Hawks 2012 draft class. He actually defended the grade. Total moron.

It's all dependent on the notion that: A) The drafted player is given a chance to contribute significantly in their first year, and B) The player is capable of contributing right away (as opposed to a year or two down the road, which is what some teams are expecting). How many 'bad' teams have better drafts than 'good' teams, because truthfully, they have the space to let a rookie go a flourish? This is stupid.

The teams that draft players are sometimes the problem more than the grade of the player....if the Raiders or Browns draft you...less likely to succeed. If the Cowboys draft you and put you in a defense from 1992...you wont be successful. If the Patriots or Seahawks draft you.....

I would be willing to bet that if another team with actual coaches drafted Mo Claiborne, he would be a star. The Cowboys draft him and play him in a defense he isnt comfortable with and he looks like a major bust. If he played for the Patriots, 49ers, Ravens or Seahawks, the guy would be a pro bowler.
