We all know that research and modern technology has helped medecine / training / rehabilitation / conditioning / nutrition... but is it so to a point where a player suffers a torn ACL and comes back the following year (sometimes in less than a year) without any lingering effect?
We all have seen Carson Palmer on monday night - sliding for a 11 yard run (without crunching the numbers) the longest run of his career!... but we can also attest to Daunte Culpepper success (by success I mean playing NFL as a starting QB in less than a year after having a MCL / PCL / ACL injury!)... Javon Walker cutting and slashing... Deuce McAllister diving on the field...
It seems that it was not too long ago that it took nearly two years to Edgerrin James to come back... or look at Willis McGahee for example... not to mention Jerry Rice trying to come back from a torn ACL just 4 months after surgery - and it did not went well - at all!
Has modern technology been making exponential progress in the last few years? To a point where a player suffering a torn ACL will commonly come back the next year as good as new?
I'm asking this because I don't think we have seen many athletes, in recent years, that have come back that quickly from major injury - and I'm wondering if these guys - the Palmers, Culpeppers (these multi-million investments for NFL franchises) are not rushed back in - affecting their long term production?
I would think that their respective NFL medecine staff is making sure they are not rushing them back in... but I don't recall any past experience that would lead me to believe they are not back on the field too soon...
For God's sake (if the pics where valid) Palmer was spike-serving playing beach volleyball last week! Surely not the wisest move I've seen in a while, but is it back to a point where his knee is just... fine?!
Last but not least - I think we should not forget about the mental aspect of coming back from that type of injury... What happens to Carson Palmer when he feels that the pocket is collapsing? Is he rushing his pass now as oppose to making sure Houshmandzedh had recognized the blitz was coming before tossing it up like in the past?...
Thoughts?
