Vikings notes: Bennett could play, but Moore will start Mark Craig, Star Tribune October 19, 2004 VNOT1019 The Miami Dolphins would love to have the Vikings' latest so-called problem at running back.Fresh off a 605-yard offensive display that was the second highest in team history, the Vikings are searching for ways to squeeze in a few touches for nearly forgotten former Pro Bowl player Michael Bennett.Bennett, who hasn't played since the third preseason game, will practice Wednesday for the first time since having arthroscopic knee surgery on Oct. 4. Barring another setback, he is expected to play Sunday against Tennessee. But he won't start. Rookie Mewelde Moore will start for the third consecutive game, and there are indications he might hang onto the starting job beyond this week."Production is production," offensive coordinator Scott Linehan said. "You get an opportunity, you go produce. You've earned yourself more and more opportunities. That's life."A former fourth-stringer, Moore seized his opportunity when Bennett and Moe Williams were injured and Onterrio Smith began serving his four-game suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. In the past two games, Moore had 423 all-purpose yards (201 rushing, 168 receiving and 54 returning). That's a rookie team record for two consecutive games and second overall behind Chuck Foreman's 466 (283 rushing, 183 receiving) in 1976."Mewelde was a luxury," Linehan said. "Now he's a necessity."Bennett said he's willing to ease back into the offense behind Moore this week. But it's clear who he believes the position belongs to long-term."Things happen, and that's Onterrio and Mewelde's job to come in and do something when the starter is out," Bennett said. "They're doing a great job. I'm happy with the way they are developing. It makes our team that much better. But I want to come back."
