For the second straight week, coach Brad Childress said he wants RB Chester Taylor to get "lathered up" for an even bigger workload.

Taylor leads the league in carries through two weeks and has also been heavily involved in the passing game, putting him on a 440-carry, 488-touch pace. Childress said he favors a one-back offense and has no plans to cut down on Taylor's workload, which means he should be in for a huge season.

If healthy this guy is a lock for top 10 numbers

At some point Childress has to realize that the workload he plans to give Chester will increase the risk of injury to his beloved back.

I own Chester and while I'm happy that Childress is standing behind his initial idea of featuring one back, I cringe at the thought that this may be a short lived joy.

Fluff piece. RBs with 400+ touches in the past 5 years:LT - 2002, 2003Ricky Williams - 2002, 2003Lewis - 2003Martin - 2004James - 2005Tiki - 2005Green - 2003McAllister - 200310 times, an average of 2 times per year. Not that this means a lot--Taylor can be a great fantasy player without 400 touches. But this type of thing is said about 20 different RBs every preseason, and only 2 actually typically get that many touches. If I had to bet on which 2 it will be this year, Taylor certainly wouldn't be one of them.

Sadly I hate to say it, but the nature of the beast in re-draft leagues is to win this year. He can pound all year long if I have anything to say about it. I'm not worried about next year. Eddie George had 403 carries in 2000 for 1509 yds. In 2001 he had 315 for 939 yds.Jamal Anderson had 410 carries in 1998 for 1846 yds. In 1999 he got hurt. :shrug:Stephen Davis had 356 carries in 2001 for 1432 yds. In 2002 he had 207 carries for 820 ydsShaun Alexander had 370 carries in 2005 for 1880 yds. In 2006 he had....?(all the above examples led the league in carries that year)

Considering the great game-manager B Johnson is their QB, it's likely Childress isn't just talking the talk here - Min is going to be a run first team. Also, after losing K-Rob, it's not surprising Taylor is a factor in the passing game as well.

What's interesting is that there is some talent behind Taylor - M Moore had some decent starts last year (but is an injury risk) and Fason is still a young, unproven quantity. It wouldn't surprise me to see Min spread the ball a bit more, but Taylor, while healthy, is going to get the touches.

As a Chester Taylor owner, the story gets better and better. Like many others, I was cautiously optimistic about him before Draft Day but am now ecstatic.

He's not overly talented, but gets the job done and appears to wear down defenses before they wear him down. That he can keep this up for 16 games is questionable, but having Moore as insurance allays those concerns.

What's more, we may still see a more efficient brand of running in Minny as the offense begins to gel. And lest we forget the countless threads concerning CT b/c he was matched up against three prime defenses in his first three games. Anyone worried now?

The only problem now is to decide who to start b/t he and Gore on a week in, week out basis along w/ LT...a great problem to have! :hey:

What you should be worried about is later this year if Childress attempts to keep up the workload. And you know what comes at the end of the year... fantasy playoffs.

My worry as a fan and not an owner, is whether all this early work may be too much of a good thing. Didn't caddillac start off like gangbusters last year with a ton of carries and then was in the shop for at least a few weeks. IIRC

I don't dispute your overall point, but Stephen Davis' problem in 2002 was Steve Spurrier's offense and preference of other RB's over him rather than anything he'd done in 2001. A better comparison for him would be his 2003 vs. his 2004 seasons.

I've been pimping Taylor probably more than anyone, but let's see how many carries Taylor gets if the Vikings get behind. The games they've played they've either been ahead or very close. I'm not sure Minnesota will be in that position all season long.

You may get your chance this weekend as they play the Bears. One of those teams will end up playing from behind for the first time this season (obviously), so it will be interesting to see what happens to Taylor's workload...and Grossman/TJones/Benson from the Bears side.

Who is the proper Taylor handcuff at this point? Moore?

I had heard Fason passed him in preseason but it seems like Fason is likely 3rd string.

My bet is Moore. My opinion might change if Moore gets better on special teams, but right now, Moore is not doing much on ST.

currently moore. fason was inactive last week.
I would say MMoore, APinner with CFason third. but would suspect more of a RBBC aproach if CTaylor goes down as opposed to the current OMG

Almost as much as anyone (I would be anyone!)If they fall behind, he'll catch passes...nice.

:goodposting: Exactly what I was going to say. He's clearly a top 10 back now, with a chance at the outer edges of top 5. Check out that fantasy playoff schedule! YEAH CHESTER!

Prayer.Light a candle for his health every week.Light two this week as the Bears tee off on him.But yea, Prayer is his handcuff.

This is correct. Although interestingly Pinner got a carry last week so if somthing does happen to Chester *KOW then it may be a mixture of Pinner/MM to replace him. Pinner probobly in the 1st down power Rb role and MM more of a 3rd down COP type Rb although the split would probobly be 50/50 RBBC.Thats my guess anyways.Big test for the Vikings this week against the Bears.

I assume he's saying he won't stay healthy if he stays on pace for 488 touches, in which case he won't be top 10. I agree.

I doubt his EOY stats include so many carries also.Right now Chester is the 5th highest scoring Rb. Thats right 5th.

He has played against 2 of the most difficult defenses he will have to face this season.

Remaining schedule:

3 vs Bears

4 at Bills

5 vs Lions

6 Bye

7 at Seahawks

8 vs Patriots

9 at 49ers

10 vs Packers

11 at Dolphins

12 vs Cardinals

13 at Bears

14 at Lions

15 vs Jets

16 at Packers

17 vs Rams

2 Games against the Bears. Sehawks and Patriots are only difficult matchups left. The Packers have a good run defense but are a poor team in other areas.

So I can see Chester Taylor having a reduced workload but being just as prodctive against these lesser defenses he gets to face.

He looks like a top 12 Rb to me moving forward if he can stay healthy.

Stop hatin' ravnzfan and JWB.

I guess this goes in the "even a broken clock is right twice a day" category or some such . .

Quote from Peter King last March:

"8. I think next October we'll all be writing, 'Wow. I never thought the biggest impact player in free agency would be Chester Taylor with the Vikings.' Prediction: Chester Taylor outgains Edgerrin James in 2006."

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/writ.../13/mmqb/4.html
Even a blind squirrel finds a nut.Peter King: :blindsquirrel:

Chester Taylor :nut:

Hold up everything. All the experts on this board said "Taylor didn't have the heart to be a full-time back"; that he was out of shape and didn't have the work ethic. That Moore and Fason would be stealing his carries, and that he wasn't that good anyway. How can this be happening?

:sarcasm:
