Never have and never will have a twitter account - I don't want to see this crap.

How many people here put out tweets like this?

twitter is fantastic... an unbelievable resource.

Writing it off because of an article like this is like saying you won't read anymore articles on the internet...  because of the "comments" section below where people spout off anonymously.

You don't even ever see the tweets like the ones that were read in this video unless you choose to.

Interesting.. I rarely see a tweet unless it is like this.

So if I am following Sarah Spain.. I won't see all this stuff?

I had pictured it like an unfiltered chat where anyone and everyone is piling out messages and you have to sort through all the crap to find the good.

no,  not unless you click on one of her tweets and open up the "replies"  which are essentially like the comments section on facebook or the comments section on an internet article.

And "turn off retweets" - best advice i ever got for twitter.

If you want real-time news and information, nothing beats it...  great resource for FFL as well.

It's like the entire internet... there are legit sources that produce good content,  and then there are the "responses" from the masses that garbage.

I understand why you might think that.   But with twitter you choose who you follow and you also choose what content to see, and you choose whether to interact,  or just be a consumer of the information.

For instance..  I follow Adam Schefter...  he tweets out that so and so is injured and isn't playing.  ENd of tweet.

If I open up the responses... i'll get the  tweets from the plebes.... "OMG, another basspole ruining my fantasy season"   or "#### you you ####### ####er"

But I don't do that, because I don't care.

So if you follow legit news sources, legit people...  they aren't spouting off crap... sure they will tweet stuff you don't care about...  but that's no different than here where maybe 1/10 threads may appeal to you

Cool.

Doesn't change how I feel about this video, but I will look at it.

Do people talk to women like this to their face?  Are there guys talking to their wives/girlfriends like this?

I"m sure there are some out there..    but nothing beats the bullying that occurs when people hide behind the anonymity of the net.

Mixed feelings about this. Obviously the tweets are asinine and disgusting, but good luck eradicating those people from the internet. It's just part of the landscape that exists and you have to be ready for it. Maybe an ad like this will make a few people think twice here and there, but it's not going to have any impact with most people who would write that stuff in the first place. Grow a thick skin or find another line of work.

Great post, matuski.

That was very hard to sit thru.  Painful, even.  Damn, I feel like #### now and I didn't even do anything.  I don't even have a twitter account.

Obviously the issue is the recipients of the tweets seeing them, not the people who follow them.

You can block, mute or whatever, but that doesn't stop the idiots from creating another anonymous account. Rinse, repeat, etc.

I'm not even bothered by #### like this. Don't get me wrong, the tweets are offensive and wrong without question, but the people tweeting them are just so worthless, who gives a #### what they say?

I envision the biggest wastes of life, with nothing going on, no money, dead end job, in ####ty neighborhoods sitting at their computers doing what they do, which is nothing.

It actually makes me feel good knowing there are so many losers out there who I have absolutely destroyed in the game of life.

That's a fine philosophy, but can't they not be bothered it, and still shed light on it?  I cannot articulate it perfectly, but saying to a woman, ''Hey, it's not like he's REALLY raping you, am I right??'' doesn't quite strike me right.

I would love for these kinds of trolls to be publicly shamed.

The fact that it is left to the victim (victim is a bit strong a word but can't think of a better one) to solve or figure out doesn't strike me as right either.

Words do have power, and sooner or later this crap will touch a nerve.  There should be consequences.. a level of transparency would solve it it seems.  Don't let people be anonymous.

Most women really need to stay off social media. They just can't handle the raw anonymous thoughts of the public. It hurts thier fee-fees too much.

They can be bothered by it.  Shaming random men who had nothing to do with it crosses the line.

What's that now? Which random men?

The guys reading the tweets?
yes.

I think it's probably a good thing to shed light on this topic, but I don't totally get the premise behind setting up this situation.  Probably geolocating the tweeters and going to their house and beating them with a hockey stick would be better.  Some celeb (or multiple people) has tracked down maniac tweeters before and shamed, I think.

Disgusting tweets, but count me with the crowd not getting why there are random guys reading the tweets. Wouldn't it make more sense to have the actual tweeter confronted?

It's a good thing that male sports writers only get gracious and helpful tweets.  Mostly compliments, I bet.

Why does this have to be about women? All sports writers, all public professions with large following go through this. But no, as always...it has to be about just women. Men being harrassed and attacked be damned.

Because women catch a disproportionate amount of #### by cowards who hide behind anonymous Twitter handles. Men get it too, and it's also ####ed up, but I'd imagine almost all of the rape threats and a very high proportion of the death threats that are made on Twitter, on any given day, are directed towards women.

I'm sure a white guy was lynched at some point in American history, too.

Well there's not a lot of rape threats towards men, I'll give you that one. But we have no clue about male/female death threats.

Regardless, the whole point if this exhibit is to make men feel guilty. Here's an idea, go find the scumbags that made the threats.'

Women have it worse than men in a million different ways, but twitter celebrities is a strange place to go to dig up sympathy for it instead of the 100 other better alternatives.

If you think that Colin Cowherd doesn't get 100 tweets every day of someone vividly describing how they're going to skull#### his eyes out of their sockets using a d####o that they pulled out of his dead grandfather's ###hole then you've never used twitter.  And I didn't even have to make that one up, heard it just last night on XBL after committing the unforgivable sin of beating someone at a videogame.

2,000 gross tweets or 10,000 gross tweets, does it really make a difference?  Either way you're either dumb enough to read them or smart enough to ignore them.

Yeah that's not true.

Men have some holes in their bodies too.  Twitter users, youtube commenters, and online gamers are very aware of what those holes are and what things may or may not be a tight squeeze to fit in there.

But you do realize that women might find these threats -- in the age of "doxxing", another odious practice -- to be somewhat more credible? Or frightening?

And Twitter is a medium where a lot of people who are well-known communicate with their fans or followers. In theory, that's a good thing. Especially with reporters. A reporter shouldn't have to ignore their mentions. A woman who doesn't cross the street to avoid walking past men who are going to heckle her, isn't "dumb." She isn't the problem.

It is pretty sobering when you think about it. I don't understand what's at play here -- guys with abusive moms or beeyotch wives? Lifelong dorks who can't get laid? I can't imagine mean tweeting anyone, not even a woman who deserves it like Ann Coulter or Roseanne or a Kardashian.
